Hollow Knight: Silksong – Yes, We’ve Finally Played It

Hollow Knight: Silksong – Yes, We’ve Finally Played It

The sheer weight of anticipation, expectation and, yes, a lot of memes, gives Hollow Knight: Silksong a pretty unique challenge to overcome as it makes a first impression. Six years since its announcement, and eight years since the original game arrived, it needs to demonstrate two things: that it’s familiar and that it’s different. Not the easiest thing to balance.

As paradoxical as it sounds, I’m delighted to say that having played a new public hands-on demo at Gamescom 2025, Team Cherry has managed just that. If you, like me, have been part of the baying millions waiting to see what a Hollow Knight successor could possibly be, I’m pretty confident you’re going to be pleased.

The trick is in how the developers have chosen to introduce this new game – as I turn on the demo for the first time, I’m given a choice of two locations to enter: Moss Grotto and Deep Docks. The first shows how returning players are getting more of what they want, but the second shows we’re getting the new ideas a sequel needs.

Moss Grotto

Beginning with a cutscene showing a captured Hornet (the NPC/boss from the first game, who is now our playable character) escaping into the mysterious new world of Pharloom, the verdant Moss Grotto is an immediate reminder of the key pleasures of the original Hollow Knight

Even with this much distance from the first game, the first minutes of Silksong feel blissfully familiar – and reveal how right Team Cherry got things the first time around. This is still an immaculately drawn and animated world – its weaponized insects shudder gorgeously through lush environments, always darkened and inviting at the corners.

It still offers a maze of tunnels, beckoning you to explore in new directions, few of them truly signposted. And, crucially, it still feels unerringly good at reacting to exactly what you want to do – every button press rewarded with snappy, precisely judged reactions, from platforming to combat.

But, having returned to the original game to prepare for this demo, Moss Grotto also gives us a hint of what Hornet offers as a main character that the first game’s silent protagonist did not – namely, speed. Hornet attacks more precisely, can mantle obstacles, and even uses a new Bind ability to instantly regain health. But don’t take this as a notoriously difficult game getting easier for its second outing – Deep Docks disavowed me of that notion very quickly.

Deep Docks

Set further into the game, this second area is clearly designed to challenge you. More labyrinthine, and often very dark, this warren of an area immediately pits me against flying enemies able to pelt me with magma, enemies who block, and a boss who mercilessly takes me down, time and time again (more on her later).

It serves as a reminder of quite how challenging Hollow Knight could be, but also an introduction to the ways this game will enliven that. Yes, Hornet is a swifter fighter than the original protagonist – so Team Cherry has simply applied to the same logic to her enemies. The result is a combat system that feels less like a slugfest and more like a swordfight – you’ll need to evade, attack, and parry with more purpose. And when you get into the flow, it feels superb.

Also introduced in the Deep Docks are your Tools – perhaps the biggest change to how Silksong works compared to Hollow Knight. As part of a new crafting system, Hornet can equip Tools to add abilities to her repertoire. I’m able to use the Straight Pin – a ranged attack that functions like a throwing knife – and Silkspear, a much more powerful attack that only recharges through combat, forcing me into the fray in order to activate it. Even with a limited number on offer, it’s clear how much my choice of Tools will affect how I play through the full game.

And that’s clearest when I meet Lace, the boss guarding the end of the demo. Another swordfighter, she’s as fast – perhaps faster – than Hornet, able to parry, and with shifting attack patterns that feel as though they’re responding to how I’m choosing to fight. It’s here that I realise quite how far Team Cherry is pushing speed as a defining factor in Silksong after many, many failed attempts, it’s only by using my own maneuvrability (and some well-thrown Tools) that I’m able to take her down. I’m not simply learning attack patterns, or spamming moves, I’m reacting. It might look like Hollow Knight, but it feels like I’m playing on some hidden Turbo Mode at times.

And Beyond…

There’s much still to be discovered, only hinted at in the demo. I’m able to collect both currency (called Rosaries) and crafting materials (called Shell Shards) in the demo, but I’m unable to spend either. Entire fundamental abilities – like wall grabbing – aren’t shown as part of my playthrough, either. And, beyond a brief chat with Lace, I don’t see much of Hornet’s own character – lest we forget, she can speak, unlike our original hero – meaning the story is still fairly unknown. Like any good demo, it leaves me excited to see more, rather than a feeling of knowing everything there is to know.

But what is on show here is a clear message – the core of this game is about fast, muscular, precise platforming and combat, taking what Hollow Knight achieved, but augmented with years more experience, years more thought, and years more confidence for Team Cherry as developers. I feel pretty good about saying, yes, this is the game you’ve hoped for during all those years.

Distinctive New Sci-Fi Horror Game Routine Launches Later This Year on Xbox

Distinctive New Sci-Fi Horror Game Routine Launches Later This Year on Xbox

Imagine another version of our world, where people have begun to work and even live on the moon. You’re sent there on a job to repair a fault in a lunar base’s automated security network, but when you arrive, the station is empty.

This once thriving tourist attraction is now abandoned and uncomfortably still. As you begin to search for answers, you discover that something else got here before you – and it sees you as a threat.

A Distinctive Horror Experience

Launching later this year on Xbox platforms, Routine is a sci-fi horror game played in first-person with its own original take on space horror. It brings the player into an alternative future, set on an abandoned Lunar base with a design inspired by the cultural vision of the future that was established during the 1980s.

Analogue technology can be found everywhere. Terminal screens flicker and distort imagery in a way that’s instantly recognisable to anyone that’s owned a CRT television; while the halls, corridors and facilities of the base all contain details that feel like they have some kind of purpose, or function.

Routine screenshot

Investigating the Unknown

Your arrival on the lunar base places you into immediate uncertainty and danger. It’s not clear what’s happened, but it’s obvious something has gone terribly wrong.

By exploring, overcoming obstacles both physical and mental, and accessing critical terminals and locations, you can progress through the various areas of the lunar base and uncover crucial information that may help you piece things together. Or perhaps your discoveries will only lead to further, deeper mysteries.

Routine screenshot

Introducing the Cosmonaut Assistance Tool (C.A.T.)

Your investigation is aided by a sci-fi take on the swiss-army knife – the Cosmonaut Assistance Tool (C.A.T.). This handy bit of tech acts as an essential maintenance tool for the engineers working on the lunar base, allowing them to access terminals, diagnose system problems and navigate its diverse environments. It can also come in handy when exploring dark corridors or staying out of sight.

Routine screenshot

The Rules of Survival

As a game primarily focused on exploration, immersion and problem-solving, Routine does not feature direct combat as an ideal method of defence. It’s usually safer to run or hide within enclosed spaces, as a way to outmanoeuvre threats or avoid detection entirely.

However, in emergency scenarios, the C.A.T. can be used as a last resort to defend yourself. Just make sure to keep it charged with batteries to use this functionality.

Routine screenshot

Immerse Yourself Into This World

Routine has been designed to fully immerse players into its world, in order to create a strong atmosphere and firmly establish its specific horror tone. There is minimal UI, deadzone aiming and it’s possible to view your entire body by looking down.

Great attention has also been paid to audio in the game. Influenced by the lo-fi, tangible sounds of 80s technology, the diegetic audio of Routine is all encompassing and firmly grounded in reality, so that players will feel almost as if they are right there on the lunar base.

Made by a Passionate Development Team

Lunar Software is a small team of three based in the UK, driven by a strong passion for horror, science fiction, and atmosphere, which they have poured into Routine. It’s taken some time to bring this vision to life but today they’re very happy to share the news that development on the game has almost finished, and Routine will release later this year on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and Windows 10. Routine will also be available to play via Xbox Game Pass from launch day.

ROUTINE

Raw Fury

$19.99

ROUTINE is a First Person Sci-Fi Horror title set on an abandoned lunar base designed around an 80s vision of the future.

Curious exploration turns into a need for survival when a lunar base goes completely quiet. Searching for answers puts you face to face with an enemy who is certain the main threat is you. Discoveries lead to deeper unknowns and the only way to go is forward.

EXPLORE: Roam through contrasting sectors of the lunar base, from abandoned malls to deteriorating Living Quarters.

OBSERVE: Investigate your surroundings and uncover crucial information to progress and piece together the events that unfolded before your arrival.

IMMERSE: Full body awareness, diegetic audio, and a minimal UI help create a gripping and atmospheric experience.

OPERATE: Your Cosmonaut Assistance Tool (C.A.T.) is vital. Use it to access critical terminals, navigate the environment and identify clues.

SURVIVE: Run, hide, or attempt to defend yourself against unknown threats using the C.A.T. as a last resort.

Five Tips to Help You Get Started with Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X|S

Five Tips to Help You Get Started with Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox Series X|S

Black Myth: Wukong Key Art

This week Xbox players can take up their staffs and assume the role of the Destined One as Black Myth: Wukong launches for Xbox Series X|S on August 20! Inspired by the classic Chinese literary novel, “Journey to the West,” Wukong tells the story of the Destined One as they travel across various mythical lands, seeking to understand an ancient mystery while dispatching many challenging foes along the way.

Wukong unravels this tale by pulling from multiple genres, namely Soulslikes, but also RPGs and boss rush types to deliver an engaging, high-quality, and challenging experience. And like all good Soulslikes, Wukong follows many of the genre’s staples like resurrection at Shrines, respawning enemies, and… oh yeah… it can make you want to throw your controller through the screen at times.

So far I’ve had a chance to play about five hours of Wukong, recently wrapping up the first Chapter of the game. To help get your monkey paws ready for this wonderous and engaging world, I’ve put together five tips to help get you situated in this mythical land.

Focus on a Balanced Character Build at First

Just one look at the ability tree can be quite daunting. For Chapter 1, it’s best to focus on leveling up your base stats before you really start to experiment with a variety of advanced skills. The Foundation section is full of some of the key areas you want to invest in early on, like Stamina (Simian Agility to improve dodge), Martial Arts (grab Mobile Spin to help deflect projectiles), and Survival (putting at least three points each into Health and Stamina). After that, put Sparks into upgrading Smash Stance, your heavy attack. You can learn a few other stances, like Thrust and Pillar, but Smash was so dang effective I never went back to the others.

Stay on the Move

One of the first things I had to get my head around was that The Destined One has no block or parry abilities – pretty wild for a Soulslike to throw us out there like that. That means you need to lean into his agility abilities like dodging and sprinting. And while there are no well-timed parries you need to try and perfect, you can be rewarded with a well-timed Perfect Dodge which refills a portion of your Focus Points (used to charge up heavy attacks). As I mentioned above, as long as you’re investing Sparks into your Foundational stats, like putting points into your Stamina tree (Simian Agility, Endurance, Deft Evasion, and Everlasting Vigor), you’ll greatly increase your chances of survival here in the early phase of the game.

Search Out the Yaoguai Chiefs

Despite what your linear in-game map might imply, there are many hidden side paths for you to uncover — some of which may lead you to a Yaogui Chief, mini-bosses who you can absorb their power from once defeated. This can become super useful when you start to square off against the Yaogui Kings — being able to temporarily summon a Chief’s spirit to help unleash powerful attacks could help you turn the tide of battle. Two of my favorites were Guangzhi with his flaming dash attack, and Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang’s giant frog tongue that slaps groups enemies around a bit.

Take Some Time and Meditate

Like the Chiefs, it’s worth seeking out Meditation Spots that are just slightly off the beaten path. Not only do they play a nice cinematic that lets you appreciate how good this game looks, but it will reward you with a Spark which you can feed into your character build. There are three to find in Chapter 1: the Forest of Wolves, the Bamboo Grove, and the Black Wind Cave.

Ring the Three Bells

As you venture across the opening zone of Black Wild Mountain, you may have stumbled across a giant bell and taken the opportunity to ring one or two of them. Well, we recommend venturing out and finding all three as it unlocks a special, hidden area that once completed will award you with a Legendary Vessel, the Fireproof Mantle, which grants burn immunity (this will come in handy for the Chapter 1 boss encounter). You can find the three bells in the northeastern part of the map, the southeastern corner, and the southern area (follow the river to find this one hiding in the mist).

I hope these tips help set you up for success in the early going as you embark on your epic journey through Black Myth: Wukong, available August 20 for Xbox Series X|S.

Battlefield 6 Brings the Noise – Play the Open Beta for Free This Weekend

There’s something about the noise of a Battlefield game. The soft, terrifying crack of a sniper rifle you can’t see. The rumble of a tank as it rounds a corner. The agonising creak of a building falling apart at the seams around your once-safe hiding place. EA’s series has always used noise not just to communicate the feeling of being in a true warzone, but as a mechanic all its own. The mark of a great Battlefield game is that, a few hours in, you’ll experience the dawning feeling that you’re no longer being subjected to the noise – you’re reading it.

It’s something of a metaphor for the game as a whole. A full-size Battlefield match is full of sound and fury – dozens of players, multiple objectives competing for your attention, loadouts to consider, squads to wrangle. Learning to work within all that noise, to navigate it, is the path to victory. After hours spent in its open beta, Battlefield 6 isn’t just bringing the noise, but looks to push it to new levels.

In many ways, this is a comforting return to familiarity: Battlefield 6 is set in the near-future, but near enough that it resembles a contemporary military game; it sees a return to class-based gameplay; it takes its cues from the shape of Battlefield 4 and the “tactical destruction” of Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

It all means that, when entering the enormous tug-of-war environments of Conquest mode, this feels like the gaming equivalent of a warm blanket. I know exactly where I should be, and what I should be doing, meaning I’m immediately putting my attention towards learning how maps work, and how the team can work together most effectively.

But just as you learn to read that noise, returning players will start to feel how subtle changes can make for big effects. Take what the developers are calling “kinaesthetic combat” – a term used to cover a raft of changes to how your character moves through the world. You’ll automatically lean around walls, crouch-run when under fire, and slide when approaching cover – it’s designed to feel right as well as benefit you, tiny, intuitive changes that add to a far smoother experience.

Drag-and-revive is a part of this, perhaps the biggest change to the make-up of a Battlefield game – Support class players are still the most effective way to get your teammates back up after you’re downed, but anyone can now help out. Approaching a downed player, you’ll now be able to grab them, pull them out of danger, and revive after a few seconds. It’s a fabulously risky proposition, often forcing you to run into danger in order to reap the rewards of saving someone else, and there’s an art to realising when you should or shouldn’t try it.

This approach – adding new details rather than wholesale shifts – feels as though it’s paying off handsomely, even pre-release. This is Battlefield as we remember it, but modernised. It still feels distinct enough from its genre peers to feel essential, without straying too far from the core of the experience we already loved. It’s going in loud, just as you’d hope.

Battlefield 6 is in open beta on Xbox Series X|S until 1am Pacific, Sunday, August 17 – and for this weekend, you can play it online with no Game Pass membership. The full game will launch on October 10.

How Strange Scaffold Tackled the TMNT World in Tactical Takedown

How Strange Scaffold Tackled the TMNT World in Tactical Takedown

TMNT TT key art

The place:

New York City.

The time:

Three years after the deaths of Shredder and Hamato Yoshi…

…the father, mentor, and friend also known as Master Splinter.

Strange Scaffold, as a group of developers, are known for making their own small contained worlds like I Am Your Beast or El Paso, Elsewhere, but when the opportunity arose for us to play in another playground we couldn’t turn it down! We got to make a game, with our own story, set inside the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” world. And if you read the above, you know we really got to make our story.

TMNT: Tactical Takedown began its life as a totally different game, well, kind of. I’ll let Xalavier Nelson Jr, our Studio Head tell you. “Teenage Demon Slayer Society, another Strange Scaffold project, was the origin of our journey adapting action game mechanics to a turn-based format.” This game served as a jumping off point, letting the team hit the ground running even faster when Tactical Takedown began development. “While that project is still in development, we’re incredibly glad that its technology got to result in TMNT: Tactical Takedown existing, and coming out sooner than later!”

TMNT TT screenshot

“The game has a more focused scope and scale than most TMNT projects, we had really exciting conversations with Paramount about that giving us the freedom to pursue large, bold creative leaps.” Xalavier noted, “So, we took the biggest leap we could–with the Turtles on the cusp of adulthood, in a world where Splinter and Shredder are both dead. Paramount signed off without a single note and the rest is history.”

Bringing in a new leader for The Foot Clan had a natural choice, to us, in Karai but they are teaming them with Baxter Stockman? “Karai is a complex character. She’s ambitious, but forever in Shredder’s shadow. She’s honorable, but ruthless.”, Michael Futter, Licensing Producer on the game, “Teaming her up with Baxter Stockman may seem like a curious choice, and players will need to experience the game to understand why she’s thrown in with him. Not all is as it seems…”

TMNT TT screenshot

An interesting challenge was translating the feeling of each Turtle to a tactical combat system. “Tom Vinita, our game’s lead designer, did an excellent job in identifying early on what the brothers would need in order to feel different from one another without overloading the player with too much information (or making the moves too difficult to understand).”, Amanda Farough, Executive Producer on the game noted, “He struck those chords relatively early on, allowing our level designer, Aubrey Rugroden, to build out the individual ‘biomes’ with each of the Turtles’ moves allowed to shine through.”

Another question for the team was how can you marry the more fast-paced feeling that the TMNT are known for with what is traditionally a slower genre? “The real tricky bit”, Amanda went on to explain, “was finding the right rhythm in balancing the game’s methodical tactical rhythms with its fast-paced beat-em-up elements. It took time to tune the kits and the biomes to find that balance, but it’s been worth it, especially in refining for Remix Mode and this console release.”

TMNT TT screenshot

Remix Mode, which is available right away with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown, allows you to ratchet up the difficulty and variety as soon as you finish a chapter. New enemies and new problems will require you to rethink your strategies while also customizing your Turtles loadout to create the perfect moveset for the challenge ahead of you.

We were incredibly fortunate to get to make a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game that was still very much a Strange Scaffold game, as Xalavier noted the game featured “Eccentric, player-first decisions.” which is always a hallmark in a Scaffold game. “We didn’t put any polish or feature in the game unless it fit the scope of what our team could make–and would be directly visible to players. That involves putting a lot of ego aside, which is a hard thing to do!”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is out right now on Xbox Series X|S!
