Creating Yooka-Replaylee – Our Vision for a Truly Modern Mascot Platformer
Summary
- Almost ten years on, Yooka-Replaylee delivers Playtonic’s true vision for a modern mascot platformer.
- Learning and growing from the original Yooka-Laylee through other projects.
- Owners of the original Yooka-Laylee get a launch discount.
About ten years ago, a group of former Rare employees with decades of combined experience working on some of the most renowned platformers banded together to form Playtonic with the shared vision to resurrect the 3D platformer. Yooka-Laylee was born out of this vision and now almost a decade and a studio with over 60 employees later, we have refined that vision and morphed it with our learnings working across other projects and feedback from our community to bring you Yooka-Replaylee, the definitive version of the 2017’s indie 3D mascot platformer darling. Staring the buddy duo of Yooka, the green one, and Laylee, the purple one, the epic open world adventure is coming to Xbox Series X|S!
The makings of a great mascot platformer start with no less than, well, memorable mascots, and Yooka-Replaylee has got just that in the forms of the heroic lime-green lizard Yooka and his wisecracking, now fluffy, purple companion Laylee the bat.
Together they go against the comically villainous Capital B and meet a colourful and varied cast of characters along the way, some familiar to fans of the IP and some new ones like Coinelius the piggy bank and Mark the appropriately named bookmark who gives you directions throughout the game. Even some of the enemies you encounter have undergone a full makeover. The bees are fluffy now! Every character has been given a fresh coat of paint and smoother animations to go along with it.

While story of Yooka-Replaylee begins in Yooka and Laylee’s home of Shipwreck Creek and swiftly moves inside the lair of the vicious capital B called the Hivory Towers, a vast majority of the game takes place inside Grand Tomes, each with its unique overarching setting and atmosphere.
Entering the world of Yooka-Replaylee, you will quickly discover that the worlds are now more populated with things to do, enemies with all new attacks to encounter, and collectibles to collect than before. Every single challenge has been improved and some entirely new challenges have been added.
An entirely new currency called Q.U.I.D.S has been added for players to collect and spend on a store run by a franchise favourite character. You no longer have to worry about getting lost in the world either thanks to the brand world map and the aforementioned Mark the bookmark giving you guidance and acting as a handy fast-travel system within the levels. You will also be able to track your progress through a brand-new challenge tracker.

What is a platformer if it does not feel good to play? We have completely redone Yooka and Laylee’s move set and the player camera in Yooka-Replaylee to create a more responsive experience. You can now intuitively chain your moves together, which is something you were not able to do before.
In one of our more surprising decisions, we removed the double jump from the game. Instead, your regular jump now matches the height of the old double jump. This is all to ensure a better gameplay flow for the players. Swim and fly controls have also been redone and to the players’ relief, moves now cost less power to use!
Our colourful cast of characters are not the only ones who have undergone a makeover. Yooka-Replaylee has undergone a full visual upgrade covering every single art asset in the game along with a complete UI and HUD refresh. As you run through the grass at Shipwreck Creek or the snow in Glitterglaze Glacier, the world around you feels truly alive and breathing, creating a fully immersive platforming experience.
And I cannot finish a segment talking about immersion without highlighting the beautifully arranged orchestral score, based on the original score composed by Grant Kirkhope and David Wise, we worked together with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra to produce.

The founders of Playtonic had a vision for a new mascot platformer that would breathe new life into the 3D platforming genre. The very first Yooka-Laylee (2017) is to thank for the position the studio is in now, doubling as a development studio and a publisher, and for the fact that I get to work at Playtonic.
As we approach our tenth anniversary with more resources, more employees with fresh ideas, valuable community feedback and lessons learned working across other secret projects, we think it is only appropriate to go back to that original adventure and celebrate a whole decade of fun and love for platforming by delivering the true definitive version of Yooka and Laylee’s first adventure. And what better way to kickstart an exciting new beginning for the franchise than this? We cannot wait for you to get your hands on Yooka-Replaylee when it launches on Xbox Series X|S. I am also delighted to announce that owners of the original Yooka-Laylee on Xbox will be entitled to an owner’s discount at launch!
Yooka-Replaylee
Playtonic Friends

Soul Stalker: Can You Overcome Its Roguelike World Through Pure Skill?
Summary
- Battle hordes of corrupted apparitions.
- Gain world knowledge through NPC interaction and combine items for astounding loadout options.
- Progress through the ascension system to take full advantage of your overpowered builds.
In Soul Stalker, you take on the role of one of 21 unique characters to protect earth-bound ghosts. Set in a distinctive 3D world with paper-like graphics, this bullet heaven roguelike places skill at the core of its design. Rather than improving through grinding, you’ll advance by mastering the game’s mechanics and learning to optimize the interactions between characters, weapons, and trinkets.
Wield four to six weapons in simultaneous auto-attacking action to go on runs to defend your ghostly companions, while traversing combat encounters, campfires, and shops along the way. Each run typically lasts 20-25 minutes, and when you die, nothing except the currency called “Souls” carries over to your next attempt.

Souls aren’t used for permanent upgrades but to unlock new weapons and trinkets, which you usually find on runs. You can also use them to create your ideal starting loadout. Instead of relying on grinding for stats, the game encourages you to improve by understanding the synergies between characters, weapons, and trinkets. For instance, you might come across a weapon that fires projectiles with a low cooldown and pierces multiple enemies. Pair this with a trinket that applies the “bleed” status effect and another that causes enemies to explode upon death from the bleed, and you’ll end up with a build that clears the screen in an instant by exploding everything in sight! Through learning these powerful combinations, you’ll consistently improve your runs by knowing what to focus on and adapt strategies accordingly.
Characters are also a key part in making the strongest builds possible, and you unlock them by completing specific in-game objectives. For example, defeatinga boss with only one weapon unlocks Needle, the one-handed monk, while accumulating over 1,000 coins in a run grants you access to Penny, the merchant. As you unlock more characters, you’ll also discover more areas of the overworld and be able to chat with more of the ghosts you’re protecting. These ghosts can offer valuable tips on weapon and trinket combos, as well as insights into the mysterious events unfolding in Soul Stalker’s spectral world!

Once you’ve honed your skills and mastered the interactions across the game’s 21 characters, 35 weapons, and 84 trinkets, you’ll be ready to tackle ascension levels. Ascension levels are difficulty modifiers that you can apply to a run, such as “enemies are tougher”, “heal less whenever you beat a boss”, or even “coins are no longer attracted to you at the end of combats”. Whenever you beat an ascension level, you unlock the next one with every single character, and if you manage to beat the maximum of level of ten with any of them, you can find a Master Crystal in the overworld that allows you to get a special skin!

Learn each character’s strengths and weaknesses and climb the ten ascensions to slay even the most dangerous of apparitions to become the ultimate Soul Stalker! You can play the game on October 24 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Microsoft Store with a 10% launch discount until October 31.

How to Summon a Diablo IV Wolf Mephisto Pumpkin for Halloween
Calling all Diablo IV adventurers and Halloween devotees! If you’re still pondering a pumpkin masterpiece that’ll show off your wickedness to your neighbors, why not create a Mephisto pumpkin? It’s a perfect combination of the sinister flair of Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred and the decorative glee of Halloween. Follow this guide to construct a fiendishly frightful centerpiece that’d make any hellhound proud.
Materials You’ll Need
Before you descend into this pit of creativity, gather your demon-summoning materials:
- A Pumpkin: Harvested from the fields of mortal souls, or the local grocery store—whichever is closer.
- Acrylic Paints and Paintbrush: To apply those devilish details.
- Air Dry Clay: Because even the Lord of Hatred needs a little structure.
- Patches of Faux Fur: For that unruly beast look, far more terrifying than your unkempt morning hair.
- Superglue: Crucial for sticking just about everything. Who knew crafting could double as a supernatural adhesive test?
- Alcohol Wipes: To sanctify the pumpkin of its mortal filth.

Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Prepare
Sanitize your pumpkin with alcohol wipes. You never know what infernal residues it’s been hosting. A clean surface ensures clay and faux fur adhere like a soul to a Faustian bargain.
Step 2: Sculpt
Press the air clay to your sacrificial pumpkin, shaping the bone structures of the snout and skull peeking out from underneath broken skin. As the clay dries, keep an eye on your creation. Beware that clay will droop and bend while wet, so unless you prefer your Mephisto to morph into a “blobfish” doomed for ridicule, it’s best to prop up your work-in-progress while it dries. Greatness can’t be rushed—make sure to allow ample time for the clay to fully dry.
Pro Tip: This is also a good time to use a marking tool (like a toothpick) for assistance with precision-marking where your demonic symbols will be.

Step 3: Add Fur
Once your clay has dried completely through, attach some texture with patches of faux fur using super glue. To fashion ears that scream “hellhound” (or “aww, look at the cute puppy”), glue two fur patches together. Your pumpkin should start to resemble a Lord of Evil residing inside a wolf!

Step 4: Paint
Paint time! The devil is in the details, as they say, so now you will need your acrylics to add layers of terror. Paint demonic symbols, shadow those bone holes, and forge those hollow, soul-consuming black eyes. You might even want to spill some red paint to emulate a fine splash of malevolent gore.
Optional Step 5: Extra Effects
For the bold and daring, carve small holes for the bone and eye areas instead of painting them, adding even more diabolical dimension. Place a candle inside to unleash flickering shadows worthy of a haunted crypt.

Share Your Creation
The master has finished the puppet! Take a step back and admire your handiwork. Your Wolf Mephisto pumpkin should be the stuff of nightmares—or adorably cute, we don’t mind! Crafting a Mephisto pumpkin isn’t just about rigorous skill—it’s about letting loose the inner demon and enthralling your neighborhood with macabre delight. Show us what you got @Diablo on X!
This is also a perfect spooky project to celebrate Diablo IV’s Meat or Treat limited-time event, running from October 29, 10am PT to November 5, 10am PT. Log in to collect limited-time cosmetic rewards, and pay a visit to a Dungeon Shrine for a macabre surprise. Find out more over on the Blizzard blog.
We can’t wait to witness the terror you’ve unleashed! Share your photos with others in our diabolical circle and inspire new devotees to embrace their inner fiend within Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred. Embrace your dark side, cast your spells, and happy haunting!

No Man’s Sky: Prepare for an Eerie Expedition with The Cursed Update
Summary
- The boundaries between realities are collapsing – you will need all your survival instincts and a few new technologies to stay firmly in this reality.
- A wealth of exclusive rewards is on offer including the all-new saucer-like Boundary Herald Starship.
- Can you make it through The Cursed expedition before the boundaries between realities collapse?
It’s already been a busy year for the small No Man’s Sky team with no fewer than five major updates (Omega, Orbital, Adrift, Worlds Part I, and Aquarius) for Xbox, PC, and Game Pass Travellers to enjoy. We’re not done yet and are pleased to announce that we’ve embraced the spookiness of the season to bring you our 16th expedition – The Cursed! This free content update for all owners will be available to play starting this week on October 23, 2024, and will last through to November 6, 2024.
The No Man’s Sky universe can be a beautiful place but it’s not immune to sinister goings on! The Cursed sees Travellers battling in a sort of twilight realm against the usual environmental extremes that space has thrown at them, but also, a far more existential threat – the collapse of the boundaries between realities. The new Anomaly Suppressor adaptation for your Exosuit is your main defense against being ripped from your reality.
Haunting voices accompany you on your journey through this fragile, imploding realm. You need to decide whether the information, guidance and assistance they are providing are trustworthy! And ultimately, find their source and their motivation.
Ghostly spectral anomalies are taking advantage of the porous boundaries and drift freely to and from your reality keeping a keen eye on you as you progress. If you maintain your Anomaly Suppressor, they will keep their distance. But if you let your technology deplete, they may be less timid!
The nature of the reality you find yourself in means that hyperdrive technology is inaccessible, thus incapacitating you for conventional interstellar travel. You must therefore fall back on technology of antiquity and cross star systems through the ancient portal networks.
Portals can be located through the procurement of the Elixir of Quicksilver, just one of the materials and potions that can be found to aid you on your journey. The Elixir of Glass can bolster the boundary strength, and the Elixir of Blood can pry open the gateways. But will you dare drink from the Elixir of Water in the final trial?
The Cursed expedition comes with the usual abundance of limited time exclusive rewards including a Boundary Horror adaptation for your Exosuit, a bioluminescent companion, an exclusive ink-stained jetpack trail, and the ultimate prize, the saucer-like Boundary Herald Starship.
We’ve really enjoyed bringing the spook back to No Man’s Sky for this expedition. It reminds us how playful we can be with our strange universe.

No Man’s Sky
Hello Games
$59.99
$23.99
Inspired by the adventure and imagination that we love from classic science-fiction, No Man’s Sky presents you with a galaxy to explore, filled with unique planets and lifeforms, and constant danger and action.
In No Man’s Sky, every star is the light of a distant sun, each orbited by planets filled with life, and you can go to any of them you choose. Fly smoothly from deep space to planetary surfaces, with no loading screens, and no limits. In this infinite procedurally generated universe, you’ll discover places and creatures that no other players have seen before – and perhaps never will again.
Embark on an epic voyage
At the centre of the galaxy lies a irresistible pulse which draws you on a journey towards it to learn the true nature of the cosmos. But, facing hostile creatures and fierce pirates, you’ll know that death comes at a cost, and survival will be down to the choices you make over how you upgrade your ship, your weapon and suit.
Find your own destiny
Your voyage through No Man’s Sky is up to you. Will you be a fighter, preying on the weak and taking their riches, or taking out pirates for their bounties? Power is yours if you upgrade your ship for speed and weaponry.
Or a trader? Find rich resources on forgotten worlds and exploit them for the highest prices. Invest in more cargo space and you’ll reap huge rewards.
Or perhaps an explorer? Go beyond the known frontier and discover places and things that no one has ever seen before. Upgrade your engines to jump ever farther, and strengthen your suit for survival in toxic environments that would kill the unwary.
Share your journey
The galaxy is a living, breathing place. Trade convoys travel between stars, factions vie for territory, pirates hunt the unwary, and the police are ever watching. Every other player lives in the same galaxy, and you can choose to share your discoveries with them on a map that spans known space. Perhaps you will see the results of their actions as well as your own…

A chat with the Developer of Speedollama, Launching October 22 on Xbox
Summary
- Unleash the Alpaca-lypse: Speedollama Launches next week on Xbox.
- Influences and inspirations for the creation of the Llamaverse.
- Developer Nicola Piovesan talks process.

After working on the pixel art for Speedollama, I now have the chance to sit down with Nicola Piovesan, the game’s designer, to ask him a few questions about the project. As part of the team, it’s interesting to hear more about his creative process, the challenges we faced, and what went into making this fast and quirky game.
Let’s start from the beginning. Where did the idea for Speedollama come from?
Nicola (N): Speedollama is my fourth game (fifth if you count an unfinished one), and with each new project, I aim to experiment. My previous games were mostly point-and-click adventures set in a dark, cyberpunk universe, but with this platformer, I explore something entirely different—bright, chaotic, and fun. It’s like my creative yin and yang. After working on something dramatic, I felt the need to dive into humor and vibrancy. Speedollama came from this need to create something colorful and fast-paced. And what could be more bizarre and fun than a war between llamas and alpacas?
What are the game’s standout features?
N: The retro-arcade feel is the first thing that hits you—from the pixel art graphics to the gameplay mechanics. But what really stands out is the speed. Speedollama is designed to be one of the fastest in its genre, especially in later stages when players unlock speed upgrades. It’s intense.

Some people have compared it to Metal Slug. Does that bother you?
N: I’ve seen Speedollama described as “Metal Slug with llamas,” and while that’s flattering, it’s also a bit frustrating when people imply I copied it. Sure, there are similarities—any retro, run-and-gun game will have them—but Speedollama does its own thing. It’s not just a horizontal side-scroller; it develops vertically, making it more of a platformer. Plus, it has procedurally generated levels and a “collectathon” element where players race against the clock to gather items. So, while the comparisons are inevitable, I think we’ve crafted a unique experience.
Isn’t it risky to release this game an indie market saturated with so many pixelated platformers?
N: Absolutely, it’s a risk. I’ll admit, I’m not great at market research or developing games with a specific audience in mind. I tend to go with my gut—if I like an idea, I’ll run with it. That said, I do listen to feedback. We released a demo about a year ago, and I took a lot of player suggestions to improve the game. Yes, the market is crowded, and pixel-art platformers are everywhere, which might make Speedollama hard to notice at first. But I believe that once people pick up a controller and feel the speed and fun, they’ll see it’s something special.

How large was the team behind Speedollama?
N: This is an interesting question because people often wonder if Speedollama was a solo project. The answer is both yes and no. If you define a solo project as one person doing absolutely everything, then no—it wasn’t just me. You, for instance, were the lead pixel artist, and we had a couple more pixel artists, two animators, a music composer, voice actors, and a small team of beta testers. In total, around eight or nine people contributed to the game. However, if by “solo project” you mean one person handling most of the development—coding, writing, level design, enemy AI, UI, sound, and even marketing—then yes, it was largely my work. I did everything except create the art and music, which was handled by you and other talented folks. But their contributions were crucial, especially in bringing the game’s unique, quirky visual style to life.
The indie game market is a tough space, no doubt. There are tons of platformers coming out every month, and standing out is a challenge. Exploring the New Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Trailer – A Closer Look at Bosses, Spells and Combat
The team at 505 Games, in collaboration with Leenzee Games, is excited to present the latest trailer for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers—an action-packed soulslike adventure set to launch day one on Xbox Game Pass in 2025.
This new trailer, unveiled at the recent Xbox Partner Preview, gives players a deeper dive into the world of Wuchang, showcasing epic boss encounters, powerful spells, and the intricate combat mechanics that define this highly anticipated title. Whether you’re a fan of the soulslike genre or new to action-RPGs, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers promises a journey filled with dark lore, intense battles, and immersive storytelling.
The trailer opens with the ominous Ming Army Inspector, a boss who casts a chilling atmosphere as he walks past a haunting forest of hanging bodies, delivering a speech about the crumbling Ming Dynasty and his vengeful quest to purge traitors. The stakes are set high from the start, establishing the dark tone that fans can expect from the world of Wuchang. As the trailer unfolds, we are treated to stunning CGI of Wuchang herself as she ignites her ancestral sword—a weapon passed down through the Bai family. This flaming blade is not just for show; it is a symbol of her past, one that ties directly into her mission and the lore woven throughout the game.

Weapons and Spells
In the gameplay segments of the trailer, players witness Wuchang wielding a range of weapons, each with their own unique style and abilities. The Cloudfrost’s Edge, a long sword that exemplifies precision and elegance, is one of her primary tools for battle.
Alongside it, the Firearm Blades, dual weapons with explosive capabilities, showcase her versatility in combat. In one breathtaking scene, we see her switching between these weapons, seamlessly combining swordplay with magic in the Featherweave combat style to block, parry, and unleash devastating attacks on her foes. The fluidity of her movements and the responsive controls provide players with a true sense of mastery over combat, whether they prefer close-range sword strikes or ranged assaults with spells.

Speaking of spells, the trailer highlights a series of powerful magical abilities, such as Echoes of Lu Hongliu, where Wuchang releases a thunderous roar, launching enemies into the air and dealing devastating damage. This ability, like many others in the game, is acquired through overcoming formidable foes. Players will need to harness these skills to survive the dynamic environments filled with enemies ranging from soldiers of the Daxi Army to supernatural beasts like the Corpse Swallowing Mussel—a monstrous creature mutated by the remnants of dark magic. Each spell, such as the Thunderfall from Nine Heavens or the Soul-igniting Lotus Fire, offers strategic opportunities, allowing players to stun enemies, deal area damage, or even gain temporary invincibility.
The new trailer also showcases some of the unique weapon arts and combat styles players will master throughout the game. For instance, wielding the Enigma Spear allows Wuchang to strike enemies from a distance, utilizing long-range precision attacks that add variety to her combat repertoire. The trailer also introduces the Cinder Dragoncoil, an axe that unleashes fiery damage, perfect for taking down larger, more resilient monsters. Switching weapons mid-combat allows Wuchang to adapt to different threats, whether it’s countering the attacks of low-ranking officers or unleashing explosive strikes against colossal bosses.

Finally, fans of intricate combat mechanics will be thrilled to see the Featherweave system in action. This allows for fluid weapon and spell transitions, giving players the freedom to craft their own combat style. Timing dodges, spell casts, and weapon switches will be crucial, especially when facing off against the trailer’s final highlight: a climactic battle between Wuchang and the Ming Army Inspector. This epic showdown promises to test players’ skills and decision-making, making it clear that Wuchang: Fallen Feathers isn’t just about brute force but also about mastering the rhythm of combat.

A Look At Enemies and Bosses
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers also introduces a wide variety of enemies and bosses, each designed to test players’ adaptability and strategic planning. From the Ornithropized Exiles—humanoid enemies plagued by ancient curses—to the terrifying Bird People Chief, players must confront not only physical threats but also the lore and mysteries tied to these characters. The trailer showcases intense battles with the Lady of Snow Castle, a boss whose attacks merge with her snow fox companion, creating a multi-phase battle that will challenge players to use every skill in their arsenal.

Beyond the action, the trailer highlights the richly crafted environments that players will explore. The diverse landscapes range from serene, lush villages to ominous, darkened forests that transform into menacing nightmares as the story progresses. Each setting is rendered with stunning detail using Unreal Engine 5, capturing the essence of ancient China while blending in elements of supernatural terror. These environments aren’t just for show; they are dynamic, interconnected spaces where players’ decisions can influence the story’s outcome, leading to multiple potential endings and quests that shape the fate of Shu.

The Xbox Partner Preview trailer for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has delivered a thrilling preview of what’s to come, blending a dark narrative with fast-paced, action-packed gameplay.
