Destiny 2: Guardian Games 2023 is here

Greetings, Guardians. Today we welcome back Guardian Games! From May 2 to May 23, the annual celebration of our favorite classes and a time for friendly competition between our fellow Guardians will be available for all players. We’ve got new rewards, a returning game mode, class-based matchmaking, and another shot at getting the statue in the Tower. There’s no sleeping on the dream, so let’s get into it!

Heavy Medal

As always, medals are the name of the game. Complete your favorite activities to earn medallions that can be banked in the Tower. The class with the most medallions at the end of the day wins that day, but it all comes down to who had the most winning days.

Want to put in extra work for your class? We got you. Head on over to the OG of GGs, Eva Levante, to pick up a Contender Card and earn some shiny gold and platinum medals for the squad. The winning class will have bragging rights, as well as a commemorative statue on display in the Tower for the entire year. Go for the gusto. Go for the win.

Bullseye

It’s time now for precision, Guardian. Guardian Games 2023 marks the return of the Supremacy Crucible mode. Steady your sights and strike your target to collect their crest in this high paced returning Crucible mode.

What Are Ya Playin’?

In addition to all your favorite activities rewarding medallions, we’ve got some more ways to band together and earn medallions with your fellow Guardians.

First up, we’ve got the classic Guardian Games playlist featuring Battlegrounds and strikes that should be familiar to veteran players and a new way to play for newer Guardians. The playlist has three different ways to play: Recreational, Training, and Competitive.

Recreational is where you’ll get your bearings and get ready for the trials and tribulations of the other playlists. The Guardian Games: Recreational playlist will be available all week and scoring will be enabled. Once you’ve had enough time to stretch in the Recreational playlist, you’ll want to head over to the Training playlist.

In the Training playlist, you’ll find one strike available each week. Scoring will be enabled, so throw on that build that makes everything explode—looking at you Void Titans—and pump those numbers up.

Not to be outdone, we have the Guardian Games: Competitive playlist. Now this isn’t a playlist to mess around with – this is for those that want a challenge and some extra gear. This playlist is only up during the weekend, scoring is available and here’s the kicker: certain scores mean more rewards. Make your mark in this playlist and take home the hardware back to the Tower to show other classes what they’re missing.

Party Favors

It wouldn’t be a party without gifts, right? We’ve got you covered with new rewards up for grabs:

  • Taraxippos – Can you be-weave it? A Strand Scout Rifle locked and loaded just for Guardian Games!
  • The Title – You know it, you love it, you might even have one, but if you don’t, you’ll want to pick up this exclusive Guardian Games Legendary Submachine Gun before the event ends.
  • New Cosmetics – Show up to the party in new cosmetics and ensure your fireteam will never ask, “Is that what you’re wearing?” again.
  • New Armor Ornaments – If you’re going to win, you have to win in style. We’ve got some new threads in the Eververse ready for your perusal.
  • And more!

High Role-r, Keep Going

You know your role and play it well. To turn up the heat on the competition a little bit, we’re introducing class-based matchmaking for the event. Whether you’re dicing deep into the Guardian Games playlist or want or showing rival classes how you roll in Supremacy, you can match up with other Guardians in your class.

You Stay Classy, Guardian

Guardian Games is a global celebration of what it means to be a Guardian. From Paris to Texas, Guardians from around the world are going to compete against one another for the ultimate prize: that beautiful statue in the Tower. Oh, and year-long bragging rights, of course.

While banking medallions and grabbing crests will be at the top of mind, remember to have fun. I’ll be out there trying to make my fellow Titans proud. I hope to see you there doing the same for your favorite class.

Xbox Celebrates Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

I grew up in Bangkok, Thailand, a bustling, metropolis dotted with Buddhist temples, street food stalls, and corporate skyscrapers; a city where diverse views are appreciated. Growing up, I had the privilege of attending the International School Bangkok, so speaking English was natural for me. I love to play video games with many of my Thai friends, although I remember the disappointment of many who were unable to play the same games with me because of a language barrier. I’ve lived in Pakistan, Japan, Australia, Thailand and currently in Seattle, where Xbox is headquartered. I’m grateful to have had exposure to various cultures, beliefs, and stories. My goal is to take what I’ve learned from each of these experiences to expand gaming and develop local talent with Xbox in Southeast Asia.

I am a Senior Xbox Product Marketing Manager. This career path is my ikigai, a Japanese concept of aligning your lifestyle with what you are good at, what the world needs, what you love to do, and what you can be paid to do. There are days where my work just doesn’t feel like work. My role involves reading gaming news as part of marketing research and understanding trends in the gaming industry, but I’m already listening to podcasts and engaging with news on those topics in my free time because it brings me joy.

I dream of expanding representation in gaming. Stories told from Western perspectives often involve the protagonist leaving home as part of the hero’s journey. Sometimes, it can be discouraged or considered negative if the protagonist, as a young adult, still lives at home. But imagine expanding stories from an Asian perspective: stories where the protagonist can develop as a fully actualized human being while remaining connected with their families, where the home is the save point and after each adventure the hero returns to their family. One such story is Children of Morta, an action co-op rogue-lite RPG where you play as various members of a family who are protecting Mount Morta and defending it from corruption. You venture forth as one family member, return home to save, and then play as another family member. Victory hinges upon the entire family unit.

I’m grateful things are starting to change. Titles like Sea of Thieves have added Thai as a language option and Minecraft Legends is launching with full audio support for 16 languages including Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. I’m also grateful that character creation options have expanded in recent years. As a child, I had my real self — a person of Thai and Indian descent — and then I had my “video game” self, always modeled after the prevalent white action heroes at the time. Now, I’m able to choose characters whose facial features and skin tones are closer to my own.

As I continue my journey here at Xbox, I hope to have more opportunities to provide greater representation for the culture, media, music, and gaming of Southeast Asia.

Artist Isip Xin Shares Her Xbox Logo Redesign Inspiration

Artist Isip Xin stands next to a wooden door wearing a black tank top.

In celebration of Asian and Pacific Islander Month, Xbox commissioned artist Isip Xin to design the artwork for this year’s campaign. Below, Isip shares the inspiration behind the design:

“The Asian and Pacific Islander experience is one full of mutual inspiration. Together, we create spaces that show just how massive, diverse, and deeply interconnected our community is. For this moment, I used water forms to show the flow of inspiration between us. Organic nerve and root-like imagery give the image a unified, but not statically structured body. The piece’s balanced energy is full of motion. Varied experiences weave, burst, and bloom together. As an artist and a gamer, I am centered around creating, cultivating, and existing in spaces (virtually, physically, and mentally) that make us feel like we belong. Games are an amazing way to discover narratives you relate to. You can find the environment to thrive, and you can be whatever you want. Living in these places and connecting to who lives there with you makes our shared identity unique, and beautiful.  It was fun to explore the coexistence and self-discovery that comes with being an API gamer and share it in this piece.” – Isip Xin, Artist

During May and beyond, we are highlighting a variety of game collections that reflect people with a diverse set of backgrounds and lived experiences from East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander cultures. Atmospheric Strayed Lights is Available Now on Xbox

Strayed Lights is an atmospheric action-adventure game that boasts an innovative combat system, crafted to let the most players experience those moments of bliss, and the satisfying flow that comes from challenge. The game features an intricate world and storyline based on emotions that enables players to relate and connect to the game on a deeper level, creating a truly unique experience.

Strayed Lights screenshot

The combat in Strayed Lights is refreshing thanks to a mix of two core mechanics that create a sense of engagement and excitement. First is a parry-focused approach, inspired by Sekiro, but more forgiving. The mechanic encourages players to experiment without punishment while rewarding players for being precise and mixing parries with attacks, key abilities, and dodges. The second mechanic is a color-matching system: you can switch between blue and orange and so can your enemies; to parry you must match their color. This creates a heightened sense of engagement and immersion through observation.

Strayed Lights screenshot

To create this unique combat system, we prioritized player feedback by inviting players to test the game from its rough prototype stage. Through iterations and discussions with players throughout the game’s production, we were able to evolve the combat system to its full potential, resulting in a challenging and immersive experience that players enjoyed.

Strayed Lights screenshot

Developing Strayed Lights was a dream come true for our small team. We developed unique processes and techniques that allowed us to create high-quality content in a short amount of time, overcoming numerous challenges along the way. We are proud of the result and are excited to share this experience with players worldwide. Strayed Lights is available today on Xbox.

Take Your Hunt to the Next Level in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, Out Today

Summary

  • Available now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows.
  • Journey to a distant land with varied locales, meet a colorful cast of characters, and leverage new hunting abilities as you battle challenging new monsters.
  • A huge suite of content including three previously released Free Title Updates available on day one, with more being added in late summer.

A new threat is on the horizon and the Kingdom calls for aid. The massive expansion, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows!

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak takes the gameplay of the base game to the next level with new hunting actions, locales, challenges, and fearsome monsters. If you haven’t yet joined the hunt, give the base game a try with Monster Hunter Rise on Game Pass today! If you’re ready to step up to Master Rank in the massive expansion, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is available at a discounted price for Game Pass subscribers.

But what exactly do you get with this expansion? The answer: hours upon hours of additional content to the already huge base game. Let’s break down what you’re getting.

A New Story in a Far-off Land

After saving Kamura village from the Calamity in Monster Hunter Rise, you cross paths with Fiorayne, a knight of the royal Kingdom (as well as Rondine’s sister). Together, you’ll sail to her homeland of the Kingdom – a land threatened by the emergence of monsters that have become unusually violent.

Set foot in your new base of operations in Elgado Outpost and meet a colorful cast of characters that will help you on your quest. Together you will face down against powerful monsters and unravel the mystery threatening the Kingdom.

A Kingdom Full of Monsters

At the forefront of Sunbreak’s new monsters are the dangerous Three Lords: the hulking Garangolm, the chilling wolf-like Lunagaron, and the game’s flagship monster, Malzeno. The sinister Elder Dragon Malzeno is at the heart of the monsters’ mysterious behavior in Sunbreak. You’ll come face-to-face with this regal and bloodthirsty threat as you hunt your way through the dangers that await.

Sunbreak also adds several returning monsters from past titles in the series, including the spikey thorned flying wyvern Espinas, the electrically charged Astalos, and the aggressive and frenzied fan favorite, Gore Magala.

With the addition of new subspecies and variant monsters, the overall roster of monsters in Master Rank is vast and varied. Oh, and monsters that are already in the base game will return in Master Rank with new moves as well, so even if you’ve got some fights down already, you’ll have to contend with plenty of surprises.

New Locations For Battle

You’ll hunt these monsters across two new locales. The Citadel is a large new locale centered around a majestic old castle. It’s a varied environment, ranging from forest-covered areas, icy mountains, and old ruins lit by pink and purple moonlight. The Jungle is a returning locale from previous Monster Hunter games that should be familiar to series veterans. It’s rich with relaxing waterside areas and scenic greenery, but don’t let its peaceful vibes fool you.

An Expanded Hunting Experience

If the monsters have more tricks up their sleeve in Master Rank, it only makes sense that you get some of your own as well! Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak builds on the abilities from the base game to add even more to your toolkit.

Each of the 14 weapon types all receive new Silkbind Moves, allowing you to further customize your playstyle. The Dual Blades for example, have a new Silkbind Move called Spiral Slash, which sends you flying forward into the monsters like a drill. Or how about the Switch Axe, which receives the Elemental Burst Counter Silkbind Move, letting you charge up and release a powerful burst counter if you release it right when a monster attacks.

With so many options for moves, you’ll now be able to change your Switch Skill sets on the fly, with the Switch Skill Swap. Carry both into a hunt and switch back and forth to suit the situation. When switching sets, you’ll do a swap evade in any direction, allowing you to maintain strong positioning against the monster.

There’s plenty more to discover in Sunbreak, including new types of endemic life that will come in handy in a tight spot. Give the Marionette Spider a try, which latches onto a monster and lets you pull them into a wall or into another monster! You’ll find them on both new and existing locales from the base game.

Hunt with your New Friends!

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak lets you head out into the field for a hunt with your friends from both Kamura and Elgado. In the single-player only Follower Collab Quests, you’ll be able to hunt with allies from Elgado like Fiorayne and Luchika, as well as friends from Kamura like Hinoa, Minoto, and more.

Each of the Followers have their own weapons and attacks that they’re most proficient at using, and you can help pick their loadouts to match your hunting style. Keep progressing through the Follower Quests to recruit each character for Support Surveys. Eventually, you’ll be able to take them on nearly every quest in the game.

Even More Hunting Goodness!

The massive expansion will launch with all content up to Free Title Update 3. This includes a wealth of new game mechanics, a new locale, several Event Quests, and additional monsters. Take on the elusive Lucent Nargacuga in the added Forlorn Arena locale, challenge the powerful and unpredictable Chaotic Gore Magala, or progress through the endgame Anomaly Investigations to further strengthen your gear.

Also included are some of the toughest challenges in the game: Risen Elder Dragons. Take on Risen Chameleos, Risen Kushala Daora, and Risen Teostra if you’re looking to test your hunting prowess. Good luck!

This doesn’t mark the end of updates, however. More updates to Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak will be added later this summer which feature even more challenging monsters and endgame additions.

If you’re looking to get into everything outlined above as soon as you can, we’ve added the free Black Belt S armor set and high rank Defender weapon tree via a free update. This support equipment will help you blaze through the story of Monster Hunter Rise and get to Master Rank even faster.

For everyone stepping up to Master Rank in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, welcome to the Kingdom and happy hunting!

From Blind Driving Assists to One Touch Driving, Meet The Most Accessible Forza Motorsport Ever

All of us at Turn 10 Studios can’t wait for players to experience the generational leap in fidelity, immersion and realism when Forza Motorsport launches this year. Just as the team has been busy building the most technically advanced and authentic racing game we’ve ever made, we’re proud to have achieved another goal: Forza Motorsport is our most accessible game ever.

While there are several accessibility features to look forward to, and each one is important, on behalf of the team at Turn 10 I’m excited to share in-detail about a few of our new and innovative features that will enable more people to play.

Blind Driving Assists

Blind Driving Assists (BDA) is a feature set that was built for players who are Blind or have Low Vision. After years of research and feedback, we have spent the last two years building the feature with direct feedback from Accessibility Consultant and Blind gamer, Brandon Cole and others from the Gaming & Disability community. Throughout our development, Brandon and other Blind and Low Vision players have been providing invaluable real-time feedback to help us create and refine the various Blind Driving Assists.

Blind Driving Assists work by providing a set of supplemental audio cues designed to help Low/No Vision players navigate the tracks of Forza Motorsport. The feature set was driven by the Audio team at Turn 10 and built in close partnership with our accessibility team throughout development. Players can listen to detailed descriptions, as well as a preview of each audio cue they will encounter on-track from within the accessibility menu. Once the player has familiarized themselves with the different audible information, what they represent, and how they all interact with each other, they can head to the track to try out the feature.

Blind Driving Assists also provides players with audible information about their position and orientation on track, approach and progress through turns, as well as information about the car, such as how much deceleration is needed, when to shift (if playing with manual transmission) and more.

It was important to the entire team that Blind Driving Assists operate as a set of features, rather than a mode. We wanted Blind and Low Vision players to experience Forza Motorsport as it was intended, by providing the audible information that would allow them to make their own driving decisions. And because of this, Brandon will be the first to say to the Blind and Low Vision community that this feature is not ‘pick-up-and-play!’ There’s a learning curve while you discover how to drive by relying on the audio cues. Once players get used to it, we think it will be a game-changer. We’ll share more for the community closer to our launch.

One Touch Driving

Another innovation in Forza Motorsport is the ability to race with whatever amount and combination of inputs you need. To develop this feature, the team worked with Xbox User Research at different stages during development to bring in players with various mobility and stamina disabilities. These features are built for players who may have trouble pressing multiple buttons simultaneously, gripping a controller, or maintaining button pressure, and they allow deeper levels of car control customization than ever. From the basics like automatic shifting, through enhanced steering and braking assists, to the all-new throttle and pit entry assists, you can create the experience that’s right for you, and play your own way.

Screen Narration

Something we are excited to offer to our players is a screen narration solution that can be adjusted to suit an individual’s preferences and informational needs to help them navigate and play the game. Making up the base of the system, we have volume, pitch, and speed controls, as well as the ability to select your narrator voice.

In the spirit of offering true customization, there are some brand new settings that provide control over screen narrator and its verbosity, such as reading list positions, navigational keywords, button hints, and more. This can help eliminate information overload and provide the ability to adjust as needed as players get more familiar with the game.

The Most Accessible Forza Motorsport Ever

The accessibility features in Forza Motorsport don’t stop there. Here’s a list of some of the many great accessibility features coming to Forza Motorsport

Feature Descriptions

  • Blind Driving Assists: Blind and Low Vision players can use informational audio content during gameplay that will help them navigate tracks, improve their lap times, and complete races. Players will be able to enable each set of cues individually as well as adjust their pitch and volume to best suit their needs.
  • One Touch Driving: Players have the option to choose their own combination of enabling braking, steering, and throttle assists to reduce the number of simultaneous inputs required. These driving assists will allow users to customize their driving experience and play with as few or as many assists as they wish.
  • Screen Narrator: Players can enable narrator to receive information conveyed through the UI and to help navigate menus. In addition, there will be options for players to customize the narration system, offering new flexibility to choose what information is conveyed.
  • Dynamic Audio Description: Players will have in-game cinematics with custom audio descriptions that change based on time of day and weather conditions.
  • Text-to-Speech/Speech-to-Text: Players can utilize these options to participate in multiplayer voice chat to send synthesized voice to other players using text-to-speech or view incoming communication from other players in text form, utilizing speech-to-text.
  • UI Colorblindness Modes: Players with tritanopia, deuteranopia, or protanopia can change certain colors in the UI theme so that UI information and focus states can be easily distinguished, as desired.
  • World Colorblindness Filters: Players with tritanopia, deuteranopia, or protanopia can add a filter to the rendering of 3D objects like tracks, cars, drivers, in-game cinematics, etc. to make color information distinguishable, as desired.
  • Controller Remapping: Gameplay controls can be remapped through the settings, offering additional flexibility to a players’ desired control scheme.
  • Subtitles: Players can enable subtitles, as well as adjust subtitle font size and subtitle background opacity.
  • Audio Customization Settings: Players are able to independently customize the volume of various groups of sounds to create their preferred audio experience.
  • Opponent Difficulty: Players can customize opponent driving levels when racing with AI.
  • Text Scaling: Players can adjust their menu text to various scaling options. In-game HUD will also have some re-sizing support.
  • Contrast: Players can raise the contrast for UI and HUD elements from the default to varying additional tiers, each providing higher contrast ratios to improve readability.
  • Moving Backgrounds: Players can disable moving backgrounds, making it easier to read or navigate menus.

Turn 10’s commitment to accessibility is ongoing. We’re always listening to players and striving to create features for more players to play the games they love. We’re incredibly proud of the work being done to empower more players than ever before to experience Forza Motorsport.

Forza Motorsport  is coming this year to Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S consoles, Windows PC and Steam, and Cloud Gaming (Beta). Stay tuned for more!
