Absolutely bananas.
Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo have lifted the lid on the upcoming Donkey Kong Country expansion, coming to Super Nintendo World in Osaka, Japan. And in today’s Nintendo Direct, we finally know when the expansion is opening to the world — 11th December 2024.
We’ve had a few teasers sneak peeks at the park over the years, but this Direct gave us a really good look at what to expect. If you’re lucky enough to be in Japan when it opens, well… we’re pretty jealous!

Scarf out loud.
Sonic Boom was one of the most ambitious projects Sega has ever undertaken with Sonic the Hedgehog. It was a full-throttle attempt at creating a brand-new sub-franchise for the blue blur, complete with new world, radically different character designs, and an accompanying animated series.
Nintendo fans certainly had a lot to be excited about; the games would be Nintendo exclusives!

In the bag.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD‘s 16th January 2025 release date might still feel like a long way off, but the new year is rapidly approaching and Nintendo is getting the hype train a-moving with a first look at some pre-order bonuses.
My Nintendo Store UK has today provided a peek at some of the merch that will come bundled with DKCRHD (nobody’s abbreviating it to that, right?) pre-orders and it looks really rather sweet.

The building blocks of history.
How many times do you think we can say the word ‘Tetris’ in a single review? Well, since Tetris Forever contains a total of 18 games based on the original 1985 title, you’d best strap yourselves in, because we’re going to be saying it a lot. Well, okay, we might mix things up a bit with the odd sprinkling of ‘tetromino’, just to be nice.
Anyway, Tetris. It’s often been described as one of, if not the greatest game of all time thanks to its unrivalled approachability and remarkable staying power. Yet we wouldn’t be surprised if you perhaps weren’t overly familiar with the game’s origin, release, and subsequent proliferation across the video game industry.

The drama continues.
Patent analyst Florian Mueller has released an extensive examination into the lawsuit filed against Palworld developer Pocketpair from Nintendo. In it, he describes Nintendo’s actions as “a clear case of bullying” against Pocketpair, citing the former’s status as a “far older and larger company” with “extensive experience in patent prosecution and patent infringement litigation” (thanks, GameRant).
It was recently revealed that Nintendo would be seeking an injunction against Palworld to halt sales in Japan, with the additional possibility of Nintendo looking to escalate the dispute in further jurisdictions. The company is also seeking a payment of 5 million yen with an additional 5 million going to The Pokémon Company, totalling the equivalent of around $66K. Although the monetary damages are said to be negligible, it is the injunction that could hold the most long-term significance.

A universal horror.
Indie developer Akiragoya doesn’t just want you to get better at their latest shmup Angel at Dusk. They want to improve your prospects across the entire genre. Though taking a glance at the new Switch port of their distinctly grotesque work, you’d be forgiven for thinking the opposite is true.
Set deep in a future where pleasure, sin, crime, and more have been eradicated by scientific progress, Angel at Dusk presents an aggressive arcade bullet-hell shooter built around a meticulously repulsive futuristic body horror theme. The levels are formed from tangled masses of pustulating body parts, held together by ribbons of glistening sinew – an aesthetic that carries over to the monstrous enemy craft. Most moments through the game’s various modes, meanwhile, are filled with dense, intense bullet curtains, while elaborate intersecting mechanical systems focus on high-risk play. Hypercasual or cosy, Angel at Dusk is not.
