Entire workforce followed executive departure.

The entire workforce of publisher Annapurna Interactive has resigned following a dispute with owner Megan Ellison.

As reported by Bloomberg, the publisher had been in negotiations with its owner to spin the gaming arm into an independent entity. Ellison reportedly walked out of these talks, leading to Annapurna Interactive President Nathan Gary, other company executives and around two dozen staff members resigning.

It seems other regions will still get a physical cartridge.

As you might have seen, the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection made its digital debut on the Switch this week. It will be followed by a physical release on 22nd November 2024.

Unfortunately, there won’t be a proper physical release on Nintendo’s platform in Europe. Capcom provided this update on the European version of the game via social media, noting how the Switch release will be delivered as a “code in box”:

Over the course of 20 years and five games, Nintendo-employed game director Masahiro Sakurai wove together five decades of video game lore to build the ultimate fighting game franchise: Super Smash Bros., more or less inventing the 2D platform fighter genre in the process.

And look, it’s a madcap concept right off the rip to incorporate characters from so many franchises across half a century of games, but indie developer Colin McIsaac has iterated the idea further: What if there was a fighting game that incorporated fighters across all time?

What’s in the (half)pipeline?

Believe it or not, the 25th anniversary of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is right around the corner (29th September, if we’re being specific) and the titular Birdman himself is teasing that he and Activision might have something in the works (thanks, VGC).

That’s according to Hawk on the latest episode of Mythical Kitchen‘s ‘Last Meal’ series, where the iconic skater shared some details on plans for the big birthday (we’ve timestamped the above video to get right to the point). “I wish I could tell you more, but I can tell you that I’ve been talking to Activision again,” Hawk told show host Josh Scherer, a prospect that he described as “insanely exciting”.

“We hope you can see the potential”.

Development studio Odyssey Interactive has announced that it is working on a prototype combining Smash Bros-style platform fighting with 40-player battle royale gameplay. What’s more, it is releasing this prototype to the public (thanks, Eurogamer).

Byte Breakers, as the dev is currently calling it, initially looks a lot like Smash when it first appears in the above reveal trailer. But, as the screen gets bigger, you’ll see that this is a fair amount larger than anything we’ve seen in Nintendo’s beloved fighting series to date. Forget a brawl, this is an all-out battle.

We are mere hours away from Splatoon 3‘s “biggest Splatfest yet” as the Grand Festival is finally set to kick off tomorrow (or today, for those in North America).

This 72-hour-long event pits the Splatlands’ biggest musical icons against each other in a battle over “Which is the most important to you?“, with the Squid Sisters’ Team Past facing off against Off The Hook’s Team Present and Deep Cut’s Team Future.

This update includes the following changes, according to Nintendo’s official patch notes. It’s also jumped from Version 3.0.1 to 3.0.3!

“I just have to not be too precious”.

Back in 2021, Black Tabby Games — an indie studio formed by husband-and-wife team Tony Howard-Arias and Abby Howard — released the first episode of the episodic visual novel Scarlet Hollow on Steam. Visually striking with ink drawings and a deep branching narrative, the duo put the studio on the map from episode one, and fans have been lapping it up since.

But one episodic release just wasn’t enough, and in 2023, the team launched Slay the Princess, a visual novel that asks you to do what the game says on the tin: slay the princess. It’s an expectations-subverting masterclass that received rave reviews upon its release on Steam. A year later, Tony and Abby are back with an expanded version of the game that’s coming to all consoles — Slay The Princess – The Pristine Cut.
