DMCA’d.

It should come as no surprise that Nintendo is pretty protective regarding its IP. Going after emulators, ROM hacks, and reproductions is one thing, but it looks like the firm is starting to aim its sights on something rather surprising: sheet music.

According to two separate community posts on YouTube, it seems like Nintendo is looking to take down fan-arranged sheet music based on its franchises. The first is via the popular channel Sheet Music Boss, which states “In a classic Nintendo move they’ve DMCAed all of our *correctly licensed* sheet music”, before expressing frustration toward the situation:

The latest UK Charts are here and it’s a resounding success for the newly released Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, which beats the likes of EA Sports FC 24 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door to claim the top spot. Naturally, the game fared better on PS5, but the Switch performed admirably, pulling in a total of 27% of the overall sales.

Elsewhere, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Bros. Wonder maintain their presence in the top 10, while Minecraft is just about hanging in there after slipping from number 8 to number 10. Further down the list, Tears of the Kingdom has seen a slight boost in sales to land at number 17, while Mario vs. Donkey Kong climbs the vines to settle in at number 22.

“They probably filled them”.

Remember last year when Bandai Namco announced a new in-house development team ‘Studio 2 & Studio S’ for commissioned projects – with Nintendo series like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart seemingly a big part of the plans? After advertising for multiple roles, it appears there’s been a small development.

As spotted by ‘Stealth’ on social media platform ‘X’, it looks like certain roles tied to “Nintendo games” are no longer being promoted, which suggests Nintendo has “probably” filled these positions.

Nintendo’s former president famously took a pay cut.

The former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had an incredibly positive impact on the video game industry during his lifetime, and it seems FromSoftware’s current president (and Elden Ring game director) Hidetaka Miyazaki has drawn from the teachings of this Nintendo legend.

Speaking to PC Gamer recently about the “brutal waves” of industry layoffs so far this year, Miyazaki cited the “old ex-president of Nintendo, Iwata-san”, who took a 50 percent pay reduction during his time at the helm of the company, to ensure Nintendo’s employees could focus on “making good things”.

I’m Vengeance.

Last week saw the release of the updated Vengeance form of Shin Megami Tensei V, one of the finest RPGs to appear on Switch or anywhere else over the last few years. In our original review we called it “the best entry yet in this dark, engrossing series,” awarding it 9/10.

This follow-up, however, takes things up a gear and exemplifies “an enhanced re-release done right” — at least that’s what our intrepid reviewer Mitch Vogel thinks:

A forgiving rematch.

You probably thought we had emptied the well of Breath of the Wild secrets, didn’t you? We did too. As it turns out, there were still features we didn’t know about.

One such fact has recently been exposed by the YouTube channel Gaming Reinvented, which explained in a recent video that the Champion’s Ballad‘s Blight battles actually get easier with repeated attempts. Who would have thought that Calamity Ganon would be so forgiving?

Bring on the news!

Nintendo has today announced that the next Nintendo Direct Showcase will be kicking off tomorrow (18th June 2024).

The June 2024 Nintendo Direct will be broadcast on YouTube and is set to last for approximately 40 minutes with a focus on games coming in the second half of 2024. According to the statement that Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa made earlier this year, the June 2024 Direct will contain “no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor”.

“I think it will be a while before it is released”.

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has previously mentioned how he planned to wrap up his YouTube channel, and now he’s shared another update about this on social media. According to a rough translation, he’s now finished recording the final episode. Just don’t expect to see it any time soon, as it will apparently be a while before it’s released.

Until then, you can continue to enjoy his regular uploads like his most recent video focused on attack collision in games. Throughout his channel’s lifespan, he’s also shared plenty of other tips and insights about game design – covering areas such as sound, graphics, controls, animation, and various other interesting topics related to this subject.

Welcome back, one and all, as we delve into the Nintendo Life Mailbox once more.

It’s Direct season, and Summer Game Fest has done a good job of whetting our appetite for hearty Nintendo announcements sometime soon. It’s been a little quiet recently on the Switch front, which may have something to do with the small amount of correspondence we received this month. Perhaps you’re all out enjoying fine weather and great video games, but Mr. Postman had just a handful of letters in his bag for us. Publishable ones, at least.
