Review In Progress: Mario Kart World (Switch 2) – The Perfect Introduction To A New Console Generation?

Highway to Shell.

Editor’s note: Having only gotten our hands on the game and the new system extremely recently, this is — as you can see from the title — a review in progress. We just haven’t had enough time with it yet, but we wanted to share our initial impressions (seeing as we’re all playing it at once).

We’ll be updating the text over the coming days and will deliver a final verdict as soon as possible. Until then, enjoy our early takes, and head down to the comments to let us know how you’re liking (or maybe disliking!) the headline Switch 2 launch game.

Talking Point: Does Your Switch 2 Vent Smell?

Not unpleasant, necessarily.

Most of us here at Team NL, like many of you, have been unwrapping shiny new consoles today as Switch 2 arrives, finally. Nothing like the smell of new hardware in the morning, right?

Having said that, while we’ve been getting to grips with the new console, some of us have noticed an aroma. Not an unpleasant one, you understand, but a distinctly warm, electronic smell rising from the console’s top vent – as you might expect from a high-performance video gaming device being played for the first time.

The Switch 2 GameCube Controller Has Gyro And A Better D-Pad

Old is new again.

It’s all busted open controllers over on Reddit today, and in particular brand new controllers that people have received with their Switch 2 consoles.

We’ve already seen a stripped-down Joy-Con, confirming (as Nintendo had already actually said) there’s no Hall Effect sticks in there, and now it’s the turn of the dear old GameCube controller in its new NSO form. Please remember that this controller, for now at least, only works on Switch 2, too (we tried it).

Video: Check Out How Snappy The Switch 2 eShop & Menus Are In This First Look

Update: It’s Home screen & UI tour time!

With discoverability on the bloated Switch eShop causing headaches for players and devs alike, you can sometimes forget how slow the shopping experience on Switch can be. Likewise, though Nintendo hasn’t bogged down the main system menu with ornamental additions, navigating the system menus is hardly a snappy experience, either.

Well, it seems like Switch 2 is going to be a big upgrade in that department, as evidenced in this first look at the new Switch 2 eShop (which is now live) and the system’s menus, courtesy of VGC editor-in-chief and lucky blighter Andy Robinson, who took delivery of a Switch 2 earlier today.

Adorable ‘Little Nemo’ Metroidvania Wakes Up On Switch Next Year

Wakey wakey.

We’ve been keeping an eye out for updates on Little Nemo and the Guardians of Slumberland ever since we first noticed it in 2023’s Wholesome Direct. Well, not only do we now have a new trailer, we also have a release window! This adorable-looking metroidvania will be getting sleepy on Switch at some point in 2026.

For those who haven’t stumbled across this one before, this is one of a handful of ‘Little Nemo’ projects currently in development inspired by the early 20th-century comics by Winsor McCay — and no, it’s not related to the 1990 NES Capcom title in any way other than its source material. This is a cute metroidvania, where you’ll hop into the dreams of the titular Nemo, and keep Slumberland safe from all kinds of nasties that have taken it over.

Random: Yakuza 0’s Antagonists Reunite To Play Switch 2 Together

Even crime lords need to unwind.

Sega has released a new trailer for Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut in Japan and it’s an absolute doozy.

Rather than just showcase the game and be done with it, the trailer instead features actual actors from Yakuza 0; specifically the three lieutenants from the Dojima Family – Hitoshi Ozawa (Daisaku Kuze), Riki Takeuchi (Hiroki Awano), and Hideo Nakano (Keiji Shibusawa).
