Review: Ten Dates – A Surprise Second Date Where More Is Better

“What’s yer name and where d’ya come from?”.

Looking back on Wales Interactive’s Five Dates in 2023, more than two years after its debut, reveals a fascinating glimpse into what life was like during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a game that leans heavily into the idea that the dating world has migrated online, forcing singletons to conduct awkward interview-style conversations with potential suitors. We certainly enjoyed it for what it was back in 2020, but we’d perhaps argue that it’s aged better as a sort of historical artefact; a brief portal into a world that most of us would quite happily forget.

Its sequel, Ten Dates, isn’t afforded the same novelty. While the pandemic marches on across the globe, many countries have taken to treating the virus as endemic, thus returning to some semblance of normality (whatever that looks like these days). With this in mind, Ten Dates is very much a traditional affair; a game that puts its focus squarely on face-to-face interactions within typical social settings. It’s undoubtedly missing the “novelty” of remote interactions that made the first game so unique, but the focus on real-life conversations makes for a more enjoyable experience all round.

This time around we’ve got the king of the jungle Donkey Kong and another fold out of the mighty Bowser. Squint hard enough at the DK poster and you should be able to see some Mario Kart action in the bottom left. As for the Bowser poster, you can see the penguin army isn’t a fan of him.

Feature: 22 Game Boy Advance Games We’d Love To See Added To Nintendo Switch Online

GBA gems we’d dig on Switch.

Finally, after over a year of rumours and leaks, Game Boy Advance games are now available to play on the Nintendo Switch Online service — if you’re on the Expansion Pack tier, that is.

We originally published this list back in April 2022, and back then, this was just a leaked emulator that surfaced online. And a lot of our early dreams and predictions came true. The Minish Cap, Super Mario Advance 4, and WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! all made the cut, while Golden Sun, Metroid Fusion, and Fire Emblem are all coming to the service in the future.

Today, nearly 20 years to the day since the GBA SP launched in Japan, Jim argues the case for why it still has a very important role to play in his day-to-day…

Ok, let’s get this out of the way first of all. The year is 2023 and I own a Switch OLED packed full of great games, and even some great Game Boy Advance games, too. So why — with one of Nintendo’s most successful consoles ever sitting right there — am I still playing my Game Boy Advance SP? The answer (in case you had somehow stumbled this far without seeing the title): public transport.

Soapbox: An Ode To Ramón Salazar, Resident Evil’s Most Absurd Villain

“My, my, we’ve got a feisty one”.

Soapbox features enable our individual writers and contributors to voice their opinions on hot topics and random stuff they’ve been chewing over. Today, Ollie looks back on the pantheon of resident evils in all the Resident Evils and pens a tribute to perhaps his favourite character in video gamedom…

I have a bit of a confession to make. Back in 2005 when I played Resident Evil 4 for the first time on my trusty GameCube, I completely fell in love with it, but Ramón Salazar and I didn’t get off to the best of starts. After playing through the opening village section of the game, which featured deadly Ganados, the esteemed Dr. Salvador, El Gigante, and the fearsome village chief, Bitores Méndez, my first encounter with Salazar left somewhat of a bitter taste in my mouth.

Talking Point: What Do You Name Link When You’re Playing A Zelda Game?

New game, new name.

We are but a few months away now from the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (finally) and it is fair to say that many of us are just a little bit excited. We recently got a look at the second trailer for it, and one of the ways that we have been channelling this excitement until 12th May is through replaying previous games in the series. This, of course, means that it has once again been time to name The Hero of Time.

For many, there is an obvious answer to this one: Link. That is the name of the series’ lead protagonist, so that is the name that many a dedicated Hylian explorer opts for (bar the odd save file all in lowercase or, in some instances, a file where everyone appears to shout the hero’s name as he goes by, “LINK”).
