WarioWare-Like Minigame Collection ‘Super 56’ Brings The Party To Switch This Year

One-button fun.

WarioWare: Move It! came to Switch in 2023 and threw us back into the wild world of wacky minigames. Those who enjoyed the experience might want to check out SUPER 56, which launches on Switch later this year and looks to be just as bonkers.

From indie development team Onion Soup Interactive and publisher WhisperGames, SUPER 56 offers a collection of one-button minigames (56 of them, would you believe) for you to drive, fish, date, catch and generally laugh your way through. It doesn’t seem to quite match the ‘Act like a chicken’ level of humiliation in the WarioWare series, but is that really such a bad thing?

Feature: “It Would Be Really Cool To Do A Retrospective On Iwata” – Atari’s CEO On Acquisitions & Dream Collaborations

Retro revival.

For many younger gamers, the idea that Atari was once the undisputed king of console gaming might seem somewhat farfetched. Yet in the late ’70s and early ’80s, the gaming giant dominated the market with the Atari 2600, introducing audiences to the likes of Adventure, Yars’ Revenge, and Haunted House. However, after a wave of shovelware and some poor management decisions, the video game market crashed in 1983 and was seemingly done for. Until a little company called Nintendo stepped in, that is.

Since then, the Atari brand has struggled to regain its footing in the industry, but with the appointment of Wade Rosen as its CEO in 2021, the company is heading in a decidedly focused direction, leveraging its broad history and expertise in retro gaming to tap into an increasingly growing interest in older games amongst the community.

Talking Point: What Would Make You Happy To Give Up Physical Games And Go 100% Digital?

Concessions stand.

While the demise of physical media has seemed like an inevitability for many years now, boutique publishers are helping to keep a passionate base of physical-only fans with a stocked game library. The scenario right now isn’t ideal, with eShop releases often only getting a physical version months later (once a publisher has gauged interest and calculated an approach that isn’t going to leave them lumbered with thousands of costly Switch carts in the storeroom) or with orders only open in a limited window.

Decade-old trends have suggested a movement away from physical from the big players — why create a secondhand market if you can limit resales and maximise your own profits? — although at present Nintendo seems content with the status quo. Microsoft is occupied with Game Pass and Sony’s number of first-party releases pales in comparison to Nintendo, quantity-wise, so right now it’s easy to imagine things just staying the same for the next generation — all the big games will still be available in physical form, if that’s how you want them.
