Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Is The Best-Selling Game In Japan In 2022

Switch is also the top-selling hardware.

Famitsu has released its annual sales charts for 2022, and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet — unsurprisingly — has topped the year’s sales, selling an incredible 4,338,931 units since its release in November (thanks, Nintendo Everything!).

If you’ve been following the headlines and the weekly Japanese charts, then this won’t come as a surprise to you. Pokémon always does well — in 2021, Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl was the second best-selling game of the year, for example. Scarlet & Violet sold over 2.5 million copies in its first week, and the momentum hasn’t really stopped.

New Super Mario Galaxy 2 Speedrun World Record Set In Thrilling Live Race

Speedrunner Jhay beats his own record.

AGDQ 2023 is underway right now, and if you haven’t been watching it already, you’ve been missing some cracking speedruns from the very best runners in the world. And yesterday, a brand new world record was set for Super Mario Galaxy 2 at the charity speedrunning event.

The new record was set by Jhay — who actually broke his own world record by 4.4 seconds. Now the record sits at 2:54:51.33 in the Any% (With Bank). What does Any% (With Bank) actually mean? It’s a particular category that means you don’t have to do or collect everything, just simply beat the game, but the only requirement is that you need to use the Bank Toad to unlock the final galaxy.

New Persona 5 Royal Update For Switch Resolves Pesky Screen Issue

Download it today.

Bayonetta 3 isn’t the only Switch game to receive an update today, it seems the Atlus title Persona 5 Royal has also been bumped up to a new build.

It’s not all that much, but Version 1.02 appears to iron out some annoying bugs that may or may not have been impacting your own experience. First, it fixes an issue where the screen dims during gameplay, and the second fix resolves a network error occurring under specific conditions (via Nintendo Everything).

Random: Pixel Artist Reimagines Zelda II For Game Boy Advance

Can someone please make this?

Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link might not necessarily be everyone’s favourite, but there are plenty of Nintendo fans out there who still have fond memories of the 1988 NES title.

If you have ever wondered what this game could potentially look like if it was revived during another generation (like the GBA era), then check out the wonderful fan art from pixel artist and Twitter user ‘huttaburger‘. For the enemy designs, they apparently took some inspiration from Link to the Past and the original Zelda title.

Random: This Mash-Up Of Pokémon And Zelda Is Mindblowingly Detailed

Link used Master Sword! It’s super effective!

You may already know by now that I love deep dives, especially into the Zelda and Pokémon series — I’ve probably written thousands of words doing trailer breakdowns and lore explanations across the games over the past couple of years here on Nintendo Life.

So imagine how I feel discovering that there’s an artist out there making a Pokémon X Zelda mash-up, with incredible thought put into the details. Bilsu Art has been showing off his “Zelda-Based Fakemon Region” for the past few weeks on his YouTube channel, and I’m already completely in love with it.

Pokémon Cards Targeted In Series Of Trading Card Store Burglaries In Tokyo

Damages estimated at “tens of millions of yen”.

A number of burglaries at trading card stores have been reported in Tokyo, Japan, as a result of the rising popularity and value of Pokémon cards. Since last summer, Japan Times reports that damages from these burglaries are estimated to be around tens of millions of yen.

According to an investigative source, there have been unprecedented five cases where the main target has been trading cards — and the Pokémon Trading Card Game is usually involved. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has reported on one specific case, where 60 cards — worth a staggering ¥8.5 million — were stolen from a store in Machida, a city located in the western part of Tokyo.

Talking Point: So, When Will Nintendo Announce Its Next Console?

Grab your dartboard.

Another year, another round of ‘New Nintendo Switch Pro/2/+/On/Up/Over’ rumours. Whispers of new or updated Switch hardware have been doing the rounds since practically the launch of the console back in 2017, and the start of 2023 has brought with it a fresh round of speculation as to when exactly Nintendo will debut its next video game console.

Announcing and launching new hardware are two very different things, of course, but Switch will soon be entering its seventh year on store shelves and it’s getting to the point where, based on the evidence of past console cycles, official news of a true successor can’t be too far off — even given Nintendo’s willingness to subvert expectations, to leave Sony and Microsoft to fight over hardware specs since the Wii era, and to lean into its catalogue of evergreen games which keep its hardware selling well into its twilight years.

Fortnite Patch Aims To Hammer Out New Weapon Glitches

Can we fix it? Yes we can.

Epic Games took to the @FortniteStatus Twitter account yesterday to announce that a period of game downtime was scheduled for this morning (10th January) to fix several mechanical issues. The maintenance was performed as planned and the Fortnite serves are now back online.

Of the many issues that the patch set out to tackle, the most prominent was with the recently-added Shockwave Hammer – a new weapon which had an easily exploited glitch to remove its cooldown period (thanks, Eurogamer). Ever since the weapon’s addition in last month’s Chapter 4 update, the hammer became a fan-favourite, but it was quickly removed from the game (‘vaulted’, as the kids say) for its glitches.

This Latest Switch ‘Rival’ From Razer Launches At The End Of The Month

Surprisingly affordable, starting at $400.

Since the Switch launched back in 2017, we’ve seen an influx of powerful, dedicated handheld systems that many have deemed to be ‘rivals’ to Nintendo’s hybrid platform. We prefer to view them simply as alternative devices to potentially suit a wide range of gaming preferences, with products like the Steam Deck and the Aya Neo Next providing relatively approachable (albeit often quite expensive) solutions if you’re after something to go alongside your Switch.

The latest premium handheld device to hit the market comes via hardware company Razer, which recently announced a release date of January 26th, 2023 for its portable Android and streaming console, dubbed the Razer Edge. Reservations can currently be made on the official Razer website for a fee of $5, with the prices starting at $399.99.
