Review: ASTLIBRA Revision (Switch) – Flawed, But One Of 2023’s Most Intriguing Action RPGs

Worth the wait.

Sometimes good things come to those who wait, and few things embody this concept better than ASTLIBRA Revision, the final release of a game that’s been developed by one man for over 15 years. KEIZO, a humble Japanese salaryman, started work on Astlibra because he felt there weren’t enough 2D action RPG games that filled the niche he most enjoyed. Over time, he released the game in parts as an ongoing freeware project, and in the last couple of years, a team came together to help him finally get it across the finish line. Astlibra Revision isn’t without flaws, but this is overall an enjoyable and unique action RPG that we’d recommend you check out.

Astlibra’s story primarily follows a nameless blond boy who loses a young girl close to him in a sudden monster attack on his village. When he comes to, he’s been struck with amnesia (ugh) and has no idea who or where he is, though he finds himself accompanied by a mysterious but friendly talking crow named Karon. The two set out to find their way back to the protagonist’s hometown, but they spend over eight years roaming the wilds with no success, and without seeing a single other human for the entire duration. The gameplay picks up when you encounter your first traveler and share a campfire, only to find that he and the fire have seemingly vanished without a trace by morning… as if they were never there to begin with.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy Is Seemingly Going Physical In North America Too

New listing suggests physical is not import-only.

Earlier this year, we were excited to hear that even more courtroom drama would be heading our way in 2024 with Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy. A physical was later announced for Japan and while a multi-language version would be available to import, it looked like the collection would be digital-only in the West. Well, it looks like all that is changing.

Revealed in a recent post from Twitter account @Wario64, an ESRB-rated physical is now available to pre-order from the Canadian store Video Games Plus for $64.99 CAD (roughly $47 USD / £38). This North American version is still set to release on 25th January 2024, but will not require the import costs that we previously thought would be our only play option.

Blogs On GTA 3, Vice City Development Removed After Rockstar North Complains

“Something about ruining the Rockstar mystique”.

An ex-Rockstar North employee has removed several blogs detailing the development of games such as Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and the cancelled spy game Agent after the studio itself submitted a written complaint via email (thanks, Time Extension).

In a series of posts dubbed ‘Inside Rockstar North’, Obbe Vermeij, who previously worked at the studio as a technical director, extensively detailed his experience working on several projects during his tenure from 1995 to 2009. It seems, however, that Rockstar North has taken issue with the level of detail included, with Vermeij stating that it could potentially ruin the “Rockstar mystique”.

With this mind, Nintendo has now shared an update about the events to feature at Nintendo Live 2024, taking place in Tokyo next year, and one of the special segments will be a Mario-themed one titled “Mario Dojo”. According to the official website, Charles will be appearing as a special guest.

Soapbox: Ocarina Of Time’s Water Temple Was Tough, But It Doesn’t Deserve Its Reputation

Blue weighed shoes.

November 21st, 2023 marked the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Japanese launch. To mark this historic Hyrulean occasion, we’re running articles throughout the week dedicated to the game, our memories, and its legacy. Today, Jim looks back on one of the series’ most notorious temples…

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was the first game that I ever played. Yes, Little Jim had to use a guide for a lot of it and I’d be lying if I said that he was in any way a completionist about the whole thing (Gold Skulltula? Never heard of it, mate) but I do distinctly remember playing the infamous Water Temple for the first time. It’s a story that I’m sure many of us can recount but, here’s the thing, I remember taking no issue with it.

Review: Irem Collection Volume 1 (Switch) – Three Great Games, But One Slim Package

After image.

Founded in 1974, Irem, then known as IPM Co. Ltd, began as a distributor and assembler of arcade machines for general stores and other small independent businesses. It wasn’t until 1978 that the relabelled company released its own software.

Despite being shoot-’em-up focused, the Irem Collection Volume 1 sidesteps R-Type, the obvious choice, to deliver three alternative titles and their associated ports. Image Fight is a 1988 arcade game that made a strong impression in Japan. Although not instantly apparent owing to its extreme difficulty, it’s a brilliantly executed game that demands deconstruction, and famously inspired Hiroshi Iuichi in conceiving Treasure’s Radiant Silvergun.
