BioWare’s lore-rich fantasy RPG series makes its long-awaited return when Dragon Age: The Veilguard comes to PS5 on October 31, after nearly a decade since the last installment. The Veilguard takes place across the northern region of Thedas, giving players a chance to finally explore the magical city of Tevinter. As a first-time visitor to Thedas’ world of magic, my recent hands-on with the game was an enlightening introduction to the deep storytelling of the series grounded by the game’s intuitive real-time combat and enchanting visuals.
Customize everything
My hands-on journey began by thoroughly exploring The Veilguard’s extensive character creator, following an opening animation highlighting where the story left off in Dragon Age: Inquisition. The Dragon Age series is known to offer highly detailed character customization, but I was surprised to see just how in-depth The Veilguard went with options to customize nearly every physical aspect of your character, from diverse head and body shapes to tattoos (options for face and full body), make-up, and facial scars. In particular, the various hair textures shown in the selection of close to 100 hairstyles look so detailed and realistic that you can see the care developers put into each hair follicle.
Once I finished customizing my character for nearly half an hour (I could have spent hours on this), I played around with the new lighting preview feature. The new feature allows you to see your character in up to four different lighting settings to ensure your creation is faithful to your vision before you commence your journey through Thedas.
Similar to past games in the series the character creator is where you choose your combatant’s race and class. Additionally, The Veilguard adds a feature to pick between six Factions, including options for Grey Wardens, Veil Jumpers, Shadow Dragons, Lords of Fortune, the Mourn Watch, and Antivan Crows. Be sure to select carefully as a chosen Faction directly influences a character’s unique backstory and even future dialogue choices.
Combat with companions
The fast-paced and intuitive combat in Dragon Age: The Veilguard was the cherry on top of my experience with the game. As a self-described beginner when it comes to most game genres, the combat controls were easy enough to pick up while providing a high ceiling for the more advanced players to put together combo attacks with companions.

Now showing slide 1 of 3
In Dragon Age: The Veilguard you control your companion’s abilities through the new Ability Wheel, as opposed to switching between and fully controlling your party members like you could in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Pulling up the Ability Wheel halts the action and lets you trigger your personal and companions’ abilities. Switching between real-time combat and the Ability Wheel felt natural and served as a quick break from all-out action, giving me a chance to plan combo attacks with companions or trigger my own abilities. Punctuating combo attacks by unleashing an Ultimate ability served as one of the more satisfying tenets of the gameplay experience, though it was rare I was able to pull off such a feat.
Trek through Thedas
Stepping foot in Minrathous, the capital of Tevinter, players are met with vivid colors and an impressively expansive depth of field. From the finely tuned details of raindrops splashing into puddles and broken-up concrete, to the sky-high architecture and statues seen from a distance, the visual fidelity of The Veilguard is truly immersive and encourages exploring freely.

The graphics especially shine when you’re tasked to travel through the Arlathan Forest to find missing Veil Jumpers. The contrast in color of the shadow-casting trees is highlighted by sunlight peering through their branches, showing the attention to detail paid by the developers in terms of lighting and photorealism in varied environments.
Friends help friends
Each companion I met on my voyage through Thedas made an impression and drew me deeper into the story, though my limited playing time didn’t allow me to meet the whole cast.
“The companions are really the stars of the show just as much as anyone else,” John Epler, Creative Director, BioWare.
Early on you’ll meet Neve Gallus, the self-assured private investigator who helps locate Solas to prevent a major catastrophe from ensuing in the game’s prologue. Born and raised in Minrathous, Neve’s confident demeanor helps guide the team through Tevinter early in the game, and her Ice Breaker ability that rains down shards of ice on foes was a joy to activate.
There’s so much to chew on when it comes to the depth of the character creator, RPG elements, and real-time combat in The Veilguard, but being able to quickly grasp the action basics allowed me to immerse in the world. The Veil between Thedas and the Fade lifts this Halloween, when Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases October 31 on PS5.

72 hours. That was how much time you originally had to find out why there was a zombie outbreak at Willamette Parkview Mall, in the fantastically entertaining Dead Rising. Even after unlocking its extended modes, it never felt enough to capture all the unpredictable and often hilarious fun had by using everything from a kids’ plastic laser sword to tennis balls to fend off the endless undead masses.
So it’s only fitting that Capcom has updated Frank West’s adventure with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster to get fans and newcomers’ blood pumping in the best possible way…
Note: Some gameplay clips in this article feature outfits available with the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Digital Deluxe Edition

Real time lighting and shadows: Whether you’re running around the colorful food court or trying to hold your nerve in the moonlit outdoors between mall entrances, the Remaster’s reborn visuals don’t sacrifice the stylised personality of the original game. The mood created by these dynamic effects ensure you’re engaged in an entertaining blend of the creepy and vibrant.
More detailed character models: Getting up close to Frank highlights the marked improvements Capcom has made to the stars of the game, with even the seams and stitching of his iconic leather jacket visible. And if you’re unfortunate to get caught out by an enemy, you’ll sometimes see anything from temporary facial bleeding to crimson bullet holes.
Non-Player Charactershave been graced with more detail, too. For example, annoying rival photographer Kent is blessed with some lavishly moving hair, and fans of Madonna the poodle will definitely get a kick out of her looking more like a… well, poodle.
Even the zombies have a greater variety of models and body shapes, which not only makes it more fun when taking snaps of them, but certain moves like Frank’s head stepping Zombie Ride become even more amusing.
Modern and classic control options
Get to grips with Frank quicker: It’s frightening enough being surrounded by hordes of the undead, so if you’re unfamiliar with Frank’s original controls never fear. You no longer need to choose between moving and shooting, making for far smoother gunplay. During moments where gun mastery is essential – that’s most boss battles in the game – you’re in for a much more accessible and dynamic fight, helped with the option of auto aim assist and a Heads-Up Display reticle.
Defensive moves are easier to perform: A new dedicated dodge roll button offers pain-free evasion, but if Frank gets pinned by zombies you can tap a face button to escape instead of having to manically twirl the left stick.
And, of course, if you want to keep the deliberate tension of the original, you can always revert back to the classic control set-up, too.
Better save functionality
More save points: Now you don’t need to worry about getting to specific places like the bathrooms or security room beds to save your game. Every time you enter or exit a new area (usually denoted by a very short loading time) the game autosaves, reducing that previous dread of having to restart from the beginning due to being unexpectedly overrun. It personally meant I took more risks getting around Willamette Mall knowing my mistakes wouldn’t be punished as badly compared to my exploration in the original.
Improved survivor intelligence
Improved NPC intelligence: It was all too easy for your fellow survivors to get turned into zombie chow by getting caught on bits of the environment or not following you quickly enough in the original Dead Rising, something Capcom addresses in the Remaster. While you still need to be mindful of their surroundings, the NPCs have better pathfinding intelligence around obstacles, with some areas tweaked to let them navigate better in trickier locations.
Undead aptitude: The improved AI isn’t limited to survivors, either. Stumble across any of the armed zombie cops and they’ll fire at you. Although thankfully they’re not the best of shots – to be fair, they are aiming with undead eyeballs.
A better life through the lens
Get picture perfect: In all the zombie smashing chaos, it’s easy to forget that Frank’s only in this situation because he wants to get some world-changing snaps. So taking great photos has been made easier with the addition of an auto focus button and the ability to tilt the camera.
More generous Prestige Points (PP): If the enhanced visuals weren’t excuse enough to take more pictures, better shots now earn larger ability-boosting PP, making it easier and quicker to upgrade Frank and survive a bit longer in the wilds of the Mall.
Updated UI and quality-of-life features
Snappy status screens and HUD options: If navigating the improved mall is a joy, the same can be said for the enhanced UI and menus. The status screen alone is impressive, featuring Frank framed in a viewfinder, breathing, blinking and wearing whatever clothing you’ve donned him in at that moment.
With the vast range of tweaks available to the HUD, you can also make the game look as cinematic as you wish. One particularly handy addition is the damage bar beneath each weapon, indicating when your equipped bludgeon will break. So this time if you’re caught lacking in the middle of a fight, it’s entirely your own fault.
Audio updates
All NPCS are voiced: While being able to switch the mall’s ambient music at any time is a great mood modifier, the real audio game changer comes from the vast amount of spoken dialogue in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. Voice acting is ever-present, creating more intuitive and faster interactions, and making it easier to locate some survivors.
Otis isn’t as needy: VO also changes your relationship with everyone’s favorite mall janitor, Otis. In the original game, answering any of his frequent calls to receive info and new missions prevented Frank from doing almost anything in that moment, including defending himself. If you were attacked, the call would end and Otis would later ring back to scold you for cutting him off… before restarting his previous call info from the start.
But now, thanks to Otis being voiced, Frank can answer and listen to his friend’s calls without interruption or concern – and even if you ‘accidentally’ cut Otis off by walking into an area which requires loading, he’s still remarkably chill about it. Phew. And as a little nice bonus, if you activate the Controller Speaker option, you’ll hear his calls through the DualSense controller.
You won’t have to wait long to enjoy all these enhancements that make Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster the most memorable trip to the mall you’ll ever experience, when it launches September 19 on PS5. Enjoy your 72 hours…
UPDATE: PlayStation 5 Pro will launch in Singapore on November 7, 2024 with Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of SGD 1,069. Pre-order will begin from September 26, 2024 in participating retailers
Over the last four years since the launch of PS5, we’ve worked hard to continuously evolve the console experience and deliver the great games our players expect from us. Today, I’m incredibly proud to announce the next step in that evolution and welcome PlayStation 5 Pro to the PlayStation family – our most advanced and innovative console hardware to date.
We developed PS5 Pro with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind – as many have asked for a console that runs even higher fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60FPS. We achieved this on PS5 Pro with several key performance features.*
Upgraded GPU: With PS5 Pro, we are upgrading to a GPUthat has 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.
Advanced Ray Tracing: We’ve added even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.
AI-Driven Upscaling: We’re also introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.
PS5 Pro provides gamers with amazing graphics at high frame rates. You can hear Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 Pro, discuss the key innovations from PS5 Pro in the following video presentation. This presentation provides a deep dive into the key performance features that make PS5 Pro truly special.
Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games. PS5 Pro will also launch with the latest wireless technology, Wi-Fi 7, in territories supporting this standard. VRR and 8K gaming are also supported.
It’s humbling to see how game creators have embraced the latest technology from PS5 Pro, and several games will be patched with free software updates for gamers to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s features. These games can be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label within their title. Some games you can look forward to include blockbuster hits from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, such as Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.
We kept the look of the PS5 Pro consistent with the overall PS5 family of products. You’ll notice the height is the same size as the original PS5, and the width is the same size as the current PS5 model to accommodate higher performance specs. Players can add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, or swap out console covers when they become available.

PS5 Pro fits perfectly within the PS5 family of products and is compatible with the PS5 accessories currently available, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore. The user interface and network services will also remain the same as PS5.
The PS5 Pro console will be available this holiday at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY (includes tax). It will include a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and a copy of Astro’s Playroom pre-installed in every PS5 Pro purchase. PS5 Pro is available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the currently available Disc Drive for PS5 separately.
PS5 Pro will launch on November 7, 2024 and will be available at participating retailers. Preorders will begin on September 26, 2024.
Our PS5 journey would not be possible without the millions of players that have supported us through the years and have shared with us their love of gaming. Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs.
*Features only available on select PS5 games that have been enhanced for PS5 Pro whencompared with the PS5. PS5 Pro enhanced features will vary by game.

The Plucky Squire will leap from the page to PlayStation 5 on September 17, and one of the many magical places you’ll visit on your adventures is the colorful city of Artia, the creative capital of the land of Mojo.
Artia is the home of Jot’s best friend, Violet, and is full of all types of artists, some of whom you might recognize.
Shortly after arriving in the city, you’ll meet Rola Lightbrush, Violet’s proud mum, who informs the crew that Violet’s Uncle Umber has gotten himself into a pickle; his roly-poly Rubboinks have escaped! The gang offers to help and begins searching the city.
Jot and his friends quickly set about securing Uncle Umber’s pesky pigs, but they’ll need to uncover a portal lurking beneath the stubborn backside of a resident artist’s pet pooch in order to complete the task.
Jot springs from the book to find the tool he needs to return Uncle Umber’s final piggy. Navigating the desk is easier said than done, however, with more and more of Humgrump’s minions manifesting in the real world.
Finally, Jot ascends to the puzzling Toy House to find his prize: The Turn Gauntlets! Once acquired, Jot can tilt the book to manipulate the characters inside, including one extra-large Rubboink…
Artia is just one of many magical locations you’ll discover on the pages of The Plucky Squire. You can experience this dimension-hopping adventure for yourself when the game launches on PS5 on September 17 as part of PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium.
Will brave Jot be able to defeat the wicked Humgrump and restore peace to the land of Mojo? The fate of the realm is in your hands.
Helldivers, when you’re on the warfront, emptying magazines into hordes of Terminids, do you ever feel like you’re a space bug exterminator? I know I do and that’s why I’m really excited to tell you about our next Warbond*: Chemical Agents! This one has some seriously deadly toys.
I’ll start with everyone’s favorite part of a Warbond: the offensive gear. The first thing a Terminid exterminator needs is a good, high-pressure sprayer. The TX-41 Sterilizer is the tool of the trade, ready to spray down the threat with chemical gas.
A literal spray and pray with the TX-41 Sterilizer.
And in case the bugs got behind you, don’t worry–your gassy little pal the AX/TX-13 “Guard Dog” Dog Breath won’t let them get the drop on you before it hoses them down with its corrosive gas sprayer. If there’s still some standing after the stratagems are done, hit ‘em with the G-4 Gas grenade. Cover the whole area in a cloud of noxious fumes, Helldiver!
The AX/TX-13 “Guard Dog” Dog Breath gassed up and ready to go.
Adding stratagem variants to Warbonds is new with Chemical Agents, but our designers felt that since gas is a crowd control tool, it made more sense to release stratagems and let Helldivers choose the primary weapons they love the most. Not only that, but this is bringing some serious variety to Chemical Agents that we hope players will enjoy.
Breathe easy in the AF-02 Haz-Master armor.
Now let’s talk drip. The exterminators of Super Earth have access to some killer threads in Chemical Agents. Firstly, these armors have the Advanced Filtration passive, which gives the player resistance to the gas clouds they’ll be generating with their new toys, including the toxic cloud put off by the Orbital Gas Strike stratagem. The AF-50 Noxious Ranger is a lightweight armor, best paired with the Standard of Safe Distance cape. If you really want to go full on with your protective gear, you’ve got the medium AF-02 Haz-Master and the matching Patient Zero’s Remembrance cape. Each set also has a coordinating player card to match the capes.
The AF-50 Noxious Ranger can survive in the fumes.
Our players have been asking for more emotes, and the ones included with Chemical Agents are some of our best yet. Want to know how to tell a joke in Helldivers 2 with your microphone off? Use the co-emote Natural Gas Extraction of course. See if you can convince your whole squad to pull your finger. And once you all get back to your ship, they can express their disgust with the Ew victory pose.
I said pull my finger, Helldiver!
We’re adding another set of patterns for your Hellpods, Pelican-1, and exosuit in Mustard–not the kind that goes on a hot dog either–this is the deadly kind. If at any point your squad wanders into your toxic cloud, you can use the new utility P-11 Stim Pistol to give them a minor heal from a safe distance.
The friendliest of friendly fire: the P-11 Stim Pistol.
Finally, if you want to really lean into the role, Chemical Agents includes a new player title–Expert Exterminator.
That’s everything, Helldivers. This could be a whole new theme for your squad as the galaxy’s elite peacekeepers and pest destroyers. Gas up for Chemical Agents, releasing September 19.

Use presets to quickly change your layout, and simply select and arrange a variety of widgets as you see fit. You can change the size of your widgets, expanding or shrinking them to give more focus to the features that are most important to you.
In addition, you can also change your Welcome hub’s background. Choose from a range of designs, including some with cool animated effects, or pick out a screenshot from your own Media Gallery for a truly personal touch.
Welcome hub will become available to select users in the U.S. starting later today. We will gradually expand support in other regions over the coming weeks, starting with players in Japan, followed by select countries in Europe, and finally releasing worldwide.
Party Share (phased release)
In the next few weeks, we’ll also add the ability for you to share party voice chat links on any messaging or social media app. This will allow you to invite a friend whom you’re chatting with on any messaging app to join your party voice chat, even if you haven’t added them to your friends list on PlayStation Network.
To create a party link, open the voice chat card in the Control Center on PS5, select [Invite Players], then click [Share Party link] to generate a scannable QR code. Recipients can open the link on their mobile device and seamlessly join the party on their PS5 or from PlayStation App.
In the coming weeks, we will also release an update for PlayStation App which will allow you to similarly generate a shareable party link from your mobile device.
PS5 beta features rolling out globally today
Here’s a closer look at some of the PS5 beta features that are rolling out globally today, including personalized 3D audio profiles for headphones and earbuds, the ability to enable Remote Play access for individual users, and adaptive charging for your controllers.
Personalized 3D audio profiles for headphones and earbuds
In this generation, 3D audio is one of the key ways that creators have enhanced the immersive quality of games. As individuals, we all hear sounds differently based on the size and shape of our head, ears, and ear canals.
We’re pleased to introduce a feature that lets your PS5 console create a personalized 3D audio profile just for you. With a set of headphones or earbuds, you can run through a set of sound quality tests to analyze a vast number of factors to create an audio profile that best fits your hearing characteristics. For example, your personalized 3D audio profile may enable you to better sense the positions of characters and objects in a game world more clearly than before, making the experience more immersive.**
To create a personalized 3D audio profile for your headphones or earbuds, go to [Settings] > [Sound] > [3D Audio (Headphones)] on your PS5 console, and follow the steps displayed on the screen. Your audio profile will be saved on your PS5 per user, and you can also still select from 3D audio presets like before.
This feature builds on the 3D audio enhancements we’ve introduced to PS5 since launch, including 3D audio support for built-in TV speakers and support for compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled audio devices. These features give you additional options to immerse yourself more deeply in the rich variety of soundscapes in PS5 games, powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech.
PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech was tested and refined using audio rig setups like the one depicted here, featuring PS Blog’s very own Sid Shuman.
Enable Remote Play for individual users
You can now adjust Remote Play settings per user and choose who is allowed to connect to your PS5 console using Remote Play. So, if your friends or family members come over and sign in to your PS5 console with their account for PlayStation Network, you can easily modify who can continue to access your PS5 console using Remote Play when they leave.
To adjust these settings, go to [Settings] > [System] > [Remote Play] > [Enable Remote Play], and choose which user you want to enable access to your PS5 console through Remote Play.
Adaptive charging for the DualSense wireless controller, DualSense Edge wireless controller, PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, and Access controller is now available for the slimmer PS5 model, when the console is in rest mode (and will also be available for PS5 Pro when it launches).*** Adaptive charging helps save power by adjusting the length of time that power is supplied to your controller based on its battery level.
To use adaptive charging, go to [Settings] > [System] > [Power Saving] > [Features Available in Rest Mode], and then select [Supply Power to USB Ports] > [Adaptive]. After your PS5 enters rest mode, if a controller isn’t connected, the power supply to the USB port will stop after a certain period of time.
We will continue to enhance your gaming and social experiences on PS5 by listening to community feedback on features and improvements. Let us know which features you’re most excited to try!
*Widget availability may vary by region. **Personalized 3D audio profiles are not supported during PS5 cloud game streaming. 3D audio is not supported during Remote Play. ***Adaptive charging works with the DualSense wireless controller, DualSense Edge wireless controller, PS VR2 Sense controllers, and Access controller when connected to the USB Type-C port on the slimmer PS5 console (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro, using the USB Type-C cable included with your PS5. PlayStation Portal remote player does not support adaptive charging.
