My Favorite Xbox Moments of 2023

Before we start getting pumped up for what should be a big 2024 for Xbox, I wanted to take the opportunity here in this final Unlocked column of 2023 to look back on my favorite Xbox moments of the year. It’s certainly been a memorable year for Xbox, what with a major shadow-dropped first-party exclusive, the biggest first-party launch since at least Gears of War 3 (if not Halo 3), the ongoing saga that was the Activision-Blizzard acquisition, and more. Here’s what I’ll remember most when I think back on Xbox in 2023:

Out of the Shadows

When Microsoft held its first-ever Xbox Developer Direct in January, we expected good stuff that we got, like a release date for Redfall. We also expected some good stuff we’d end up having to wait longer for, like release dates for Forza Motorsport and Starfield. But Microsoft managed to pleasantly surprise everyone with the mid-Developer Direct announcement – and immediate release – of Hi-Fi Rush, a stylish rhythm-action game from Tango Gameworks, a studio known for making games that are tonally the polar opposite of the cheery and upbeat adventures of a robo-armed teenager named Chai. It wasn’t just cool because it was a shadow-dropped first-party game. It was cool because it was a shadow-dropped first-party game that’s legitimately outstanding. That moment is going to be remembered for years to come in Xbox history.

A Weekend in Hell

Diablo 4 was not only one of my most anticipated games of 2023, it was probably one of my most anticipated games in the last half-decade. I’m a massive fan of the series, and Diablo 4 up to that point had been giving off some serious Diablo 2 vibes (this is a very, very good thing) ever since I first got my hands on it last December.

So when Blizzard held its first beta weekend in March and allowed us to play all of Act 1 of the long-awaited action-RPG, I was glued to my couch, barely moving off of it as I voraciously consumed everything the beta had to offer and test-drove the Barbarian I’d come to roll with the full version in June. And it was the water-cooler moment for gamers of all stripes, be they Xbox players or not. Everyone seemed to love it, and on top of that, it served as a crucial test of Blizzard’s servers that would later prove valuable when the full, final version of Diablo 4 launched with no major online connectivity issues.

ForzaTech Goes Fantasy

In my humble opinion, the Fable reboot that’s well underway at Playground Games – a studio with an impeccable track record – has the highest ceiling out of anything in the Xbox portfolio not named The Elder Scrolls 6 (which is even farther away than Fable is). And I’m talking both in terms of potential quality and potential sales. Fable could be incredible and it could be huge, and it couldn’t be in better hands than Playground’s, if you ask me.

The Fable reboot that’s well underway at Playground Games has the highest ceiling out of anything in the Xbox portfolio not named The Elder Scrolls 6

As such, getting our first glimpse of in-engine gameplay from Fable at June’s Xbox Showcase was simply awesome – both for how incredible it looked from a graphics standpoint as well as its unique new Jack and the Beanstalk-inspired new take on the Fable universe. Fable dropped my jaw, and I clearly wasn’t alone. In fact, there was plenty of chatter online in the aftermath of the Showcase from fans who didn’t believe what we were shown was real. Playground confirmed that it is from their game engine, and I absolutely can’t wait to see more. This might’ve low-key been my favorite of these half-dozen favorite Xbox moments in 2023, only because it gave me even more confidence that Playground is going to blow us all away whenever the Fable reboot is finally ready to go.

Into the Starfield

That first weekend of Starfield? The early access weekend when Xbox fans finally got their hands on Todd Howard’s first new RPG since Fallout 4 in 2015? That was special. It was probably the Xbox’s biggest “you had to be there” water-cooler moment in a long, long time. The buzz, the excitement, the hype – Xbox players hadn’t enjoyed a launch that monumental in many years. Say what you will about the final game when it was all said and done – some folks were a bit disappointed, while others have happily sunk hundreds of hours into it – but there was an energy in the air in the Xbox community as August turned to September that stands out, if for the unfortunate reason that it had been far too long since the last time it happened. Here’s hoping that feeling becomes a lot more commonplace in 2024 and beyond.

The $69 Billion Check Gets Cashed

I almost didn’t believe it at first. Was it finally over? Had Microsoft finally cleared its last regulatory hurdle and been allowed to close its $69 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard-King? Despite the United States’s Securities and Exchange Commission making one last legal Hail Mary, Phil Spencer’s check finally cleared in October as Microsoft welcomed tens of thousands of talented developers into the Xbox family across many different studios.

I admit this was more of a relief than a “favorite moment,” as I’d grown quite weary of hearing about the drawn-out regulatory approval process (and even more tired of talking about it on Podcast Unlocked). But the deal got done, and Xbox gamers will all look back on this acquisition as, hopefully, the start of lots of new games not named Call of Duty from the many stellar studios under Activision’s umbrella, as well as the start of the purging of systemic toxicity from Activision-Blizzard’s workplace culture by Spencer and the Xbox leadership team.

Sharpening Xbox’s Blade

Xbox fans have longed for “their” Spider-Man – a console-exclusive, AAA superhero game they can call their own. At The Game Awards earlier this month, they got their wish, though probably not in any way they could’ve imagined. While PlayStation’s Marvel hero is known for being bit by a dangerous creature, Xbox’s Marvel hero is the dangerous creature doing the biting. Yes, Xbox got Blade, and the partnership is one I admit I’d have never seen coming, as Arkane Lyon – the studio known for doing first-person sandboxes with emergent gameplay like Dishonored and Deathloop – will be bringing Blade to Xbox. The reveal proved to be a great capper for the year, sending Xbox’s 2023 out on a very high note we won’t soon forget.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Card Game Sounds a Lot Like The Witcher 3’s Gwent

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Queen’s Blood card game sounds a lot like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s beloved minigame Gwent.

A demo shown to Game Informer showed off some side quests and minigames available in the highly anticipated sequel, alongside a brief mention of the card game unveiled earlier in 2023. When traversing a brand new city called Crow’s Nest in the demo, Cloud and friends walked by an NPC talking about Queen’s Blood.

Though details are slim as director Naoki Hamaguchi didn’t give anything away, other Square Enix employees called it a strategic card game with deck building elements Cloud can play around the world of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Different NPC opponents have varying degrees of difficulty.

This does sound a lot like Gwent, a strategic card game with deck building elements featured in The Witcher 3. Players could travel the likes of Velen, Novigrad, and Skellige challenging inn keepers, merchants, and more to a game of Gwent, usually being rewarded with another card for the collection if successful.

Gwent was an immediate hit with fans of The Witcher 3, so much so that developer CD Projekt Red spun it into its own standalone game that spawned two spin-offs itself. Role-playing game fans will therefore be eager to see exactly how this minigame works in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth when it launches February 29, 2024.

Final Fantasy 7 is no stranger to card games, of course. The original had a card game called Triple Triad that offered simple but addictive distraction.

Fans are slowly but surely learning more about the game as that release date approaches. Square Enix has previously confirmed the game features new story content centred around Zack, and perhaps even incorporates backstory for Sephiroth included in mobile game Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis.

An ESBR rating also revealed some wild and wacky details about the game, including its deep cleavage, pools of blood, and a potential clue to Aerith’s fate. And Square Enix dropped a ton of story details, screenshots, and more in a big update in November 2023.

How to Avoid Xbox’s Game Pass Price Hike ($44.99 for 3-Months of Ultimate)

By securing 3-months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for $44.99, you can actually avoid the hiked up Game Pass price. We recommend securing your current subscription for as long as possible. Admittedly, this approach might put a strain on your wallet, totaling $539.88 if you purchase the 3-month package from the link above. However, when you compare it to the new cost of Game Pass Ultimate for 36 months at $16.99 per month, amounting to $611.64, you’ll realize you’re saving $71.76 on your subscription for the next three years. Otherwise, secure your membership for at least a year to lock in at least some savings overall.

Blizzard ‘Actively Working’ to Let All Overwatch 2 Players Experience a Hero the Day a Season Drops

Overwatch 2 developer Blizzard Entertainment is “actively working towards” giving away new heroes to all players, not just those who buy a premium battle pass.

Speaking on the Group Up Podcast, Overwatch 2 executive producer Jared Neuss teased the major change to the game’s monetisation model, which currently only allows new heroes to be acquired instantly if players buy the premium battle pass at 1,000 Overwatch Coins, which costs $10.

“Would I like for every single player to be able to experience a hero the day that a season drops? Yes,” Neuss said. “Do I think that we will get there. Yes, I do think that we will get there and we’re actively working towards it right now. Can I talk about the details? No, I can’t.”

Blizzard does give away new heroes for free currently through its basic battle pass, but only once players have worked through 45 tiers of it by playing matches and completing challenges. As new heroes are arguably the most exciting aspect of Overwatch 2 (a hero shooter), Blizzard limiting their access is a common fan complaint.

The previous new hero, Mauga, was released on December 5 as Overwatch’s first Samoan hero. As a heavy assault character, Mauga wields a number of heavy artillery weapons like the incendiary chain gun and the volatile chain gun (which he has lovingly nicknamed Gunny and Cha Cha).

Monetisation has been a controversial topic within Overwatch 2 since its launch in October 2022, highlighted by its Steam release seeing the game plummet to the platform’s worst reviewed game of all time. Users described Overwatch 2 as “an attempt to pry open your wallet while masquerading as the game it used to be.”

Blizzard was also heavily criticised when Overwatch 2 launched as it forced its premium predecessor to update into a free-to-play sequel, rendering the original Overwatch unplayable. Since then, Overwatch 2 has endured a number of controversies including the cancellation of its long-awaited PvE Hero mode — the one feature, players said, that justified the sequel’s existence.

PS5 Has Outsold Xbox Series X and S 3-to-1 in 2023, New Data Reveals

The PlayStation 5 has now sold over 50 million units and is on track to outsell the record-breaking PlayStation 4, Sony has said.

As reported by Reuters, Sony recorded its best-ever November for PlayStation console sales with the PS5, which is now in its fourth year of life.

Sony has set an ambitious target of selling 25 million PS5 consoles in the current financial year ending March 31, 2024. If it manages it, it’ll be the most consoles Sony has ever shifted in a single financial year.

The latest news comes after Sony had called the 25 million target “high” and “not within easy reach”. But Eric Lempel, senior vice president for global marketing, sales and business operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment, has now expressed confidence in the PS5.

“Given the momentum we’ve had in November and a lot of what we’re seeing in December, just in general we’re feeling very good about sales overall,” Lempel told Reuters. “We are still pushing really hard and I think we will have a record-breaking year no matter where we end up.”

Meanwhile, Lempel told the Financial Times the PS5 is now on-track to outsell PS4, which has sold 117 million units since going on sale in 2013. “I think we have the ability to get there,” Lempel said. “Demand for the [PS5] going into this year was huge. Momentum is strong now and it’s continuing.” The PS5 hit 50 million sold on December 9, 161 weeks after it launched in November 2020. The PS4 reached 50 million sold 160 weeks after launch.

While the PS5 appears to be doing well for Sony, console rival Microsoft is having a tougher time with the Xbox. Xbox sales have collapsed in Europe, and Microsoft hasn’t announced Xbox Series X and S sales in years. Microsoft executives have insisted console sales do not paint an accurate picture of the overall health of the Xbox business, which encompasses PC, mobile, streaming, and the Game Pass subscription.

Reuters quoted analysis from Ampere that showed PS5 sales grew about 65% to 22.5 million units this year, whereas Xbox sales fell about 15% to 7.6 million. That means the PS5 has outsold the Xbox Series X and S by almost 3-1. The near seven-year-old Nintendo Switch, meanwhile, saw sales fall 18% to 16.4 million in 2023. Nintendo is expected to release its next-gen console next year.

Microsoft bolstered its gaming fortunes this year after it bought Activision Blizzard for an eye-watering $69 billion. That means the likes of Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and mobile hit Candy Crush Saga now fall within the Xbox brand.

Microsoft is expected to begin launching Activision Blizzard games into Game Pass in 2024, and it seems likely future Call of Duty games will release in the subscription service day-one from now on. Microsoft is also plotting its own app store in a bid to take on Apple and Google.

Sony, meanwhile, still enjoys big sales of its single-player PS5 exclusives, which it launches on PC after console. Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever over a 24-hour period, with more than 2.5 million physical and digital copies shifted. But its live-service push appears to be in flux following the cancellation of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us multiplayer project. Sony plans a mobile push of its own, although it has yet to detail its efforts.

This week, hackers released data stolen from Insomniac, revealing staff information, Wolverine gameplay, and the studio’s future slate of games. Sony is yet to comment.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Has ‘Totally New Cities’ Not in the Original

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will feature “totally new cities” not featured in the original PlayStation game, Square Enix has revealed.

Speaking to Game Informer, director Naoki Hamaguchi said Square Enix wanted to expand upon the original Final Fantasy 7 to create a deep and expansive world.

“In Rebirth, we’ve added these types of cities like the Crow’s Nest — totally new cities that did not exist in the original to go deeper and create this whole worldview of Rebirth,” Hamaguchi said. “We reach this area after completing a quest, and then this place unlocks. The residents already know Cloud and the party are a part of Avalanche.”

Crow’s Nest is a sister town to Final Fantasy 7 classic Under Junon, which shares a similar anti-Shinra atmosphere that players will seemingly only encounter if they go exploring beyond the main quest.

“Part of our game design that we took on for Rebirth is that in the main storyline, you’ll be saving Yuffie and Under Junon, and then from there, going towards Junon, and then going forward towards Costa del Sol,” Hamaguchi said.

“But for example, hearing the stories of the anti-Shinra people living in Under Junon, you could then feel like, ‘What about this Crow’s Nest area that I’m hearing about? Maybe I want to go over there and explore and go into a side adventure on my own to save people.’ We want the player to be able to make these different adventures and go on their own journeys according to their interests.”

We still don’t know too much about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth though a trailer released during Summer Game Fest showed off some other iconic locations like Bugenhagen’s planetarium at Cosmo Canyon, the Mythril Mine, the Cargo Ship, the inn at Kalm, and the Nibelheim Reactor.

As Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s February 29, 2024 release date nears, fans are slowly but surely learning more about the game.

After Warhammer 40,000, Amazon May Create Create a Warhammer Fantasy Cinematic Universe Next

Buried within Games Workshop’s announcement that Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 Cinematic Universe is “now properly rolling” is a tantalising tease that a Warhammer Fantasy Cinematic Universe could be next.

Games Workshop publishes two flagship tabletop wargames: the grimdark sci-fi Warhammer 40,000, and the fantasy Warhammer. Where 40,000 is made up of Space Marines, Eldar, Chaos Marines, and Tyranids, Warhammer fantasy races include the Realms of Men, Elves, Chaos, and Dwarfs. Warhammer is the setting for video games such as Creative Assembly’s Total War: Warhammer series and Fatshark’s Warhammer Vermintide games, among many others.

“Under the terms of the agreement, Games Workshop has granted exclusive rights to Amazon in relation to films and television series set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe, together with an option for Amazon to license equivalent rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe following the release of the initial Warhammer 40,000 production,” Games Workshop’s announcement read.

With Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 project still years away, a potential Warhammer fantasy TV show or film is even further out. But it’s good to know Warhammer is at the very least in the mix.

For now, Games Workshop and Amazon have said they will work together for 12 months “to agree creative guidelines for the films and television series to be developed by Amazon”.

The agreement will only proceed once the creative guidelines are mutually agreed between Games Workshop and Amazon. Henry Cavill, famously a big fan of Warhammer 40,000, is heavily involved, and is set to star in whatever Amazon ends up making.

Ark 2 Still on Track for Late 2024, CEO Says

With developer Studio Wildcard still working to turn around player sentiment on the recently released Ark Survival Ascended, the boss of its parent company has insisted Ark 2 is still on track for a late 2024 release window.

Speaking at the NobleCon19 business conference earlier in December, Snail Games CEO Jim Tsai confirmed Ark 2, which he described as the company’s “next masterpiece”, is due out late 2024. There was also mention of annual DLC releases to “fuel franchise growth” through to 2029.

Ark 2 is the Unreal Engine 5-powered sequel to the hugely successful Ark Survival Evolved, a dinosaur survival game that’s seen big sales on PC and console. It was first announced with a surprise Vin Diesel cameo at The Game Awards 2020, at the time with a 2022 release date, but it was later delayed into 2023. Then, earlier this year, Ark 2 was delayed again, this time to late 2024 as an Xbox Series X and S console exclusive, day-one on Game Pass, and on PC via Steam and Windows.

But we haven’t heard much on Ark 2 since. Meanwhile, Studio Wildcard released Ark 1 remake Ark Survival Ascended in October. It launched big but has drawn criticism for performance issues. The situation is so bad, that Jeremy Stieglitz, co-founder of Studio Wildcard admitted during a livestream that Ark’s servers “run like ass”.

Studio Wildcard, then, is busy sorting out Ark Survival Ascended, which carries a ‘mixed’ user review rating on Steam. In fact, at the time of publication, more people were playing Ark Survival Evolved on Steam than Ark Survival Ascended. The developer has a reputation within its community for delaying release dates, so there’s already a healthy degree of scepticism about Ark 2’s planned late 2024 release window. For publisher and company owner Snail Games, at least, nothing has changed.

Speaking of Snail Games, during the business conference presentation, Tsai bigged up Ark’s potential to expand beyond games into the realm of TV and movies (Ark: The Animated Series is due out at some point in 2024). There’s also word of free-to-play mobile and esports.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s Epic Games Store Release Delayed to March

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has been delayed on just one storefront: Epic Games Store.

The highly anticipated Arkham game will now debut on Epic Games Store on March 5, 2024, a community manager for WB Games shared on the game’s official Discord today. For those who pre-ordered Kill the Justice League on Epic, the announcement added that the storefront will be canceling those pre-orders and refunding customers directly.

Indeed, the release date for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is now March 5 on its Epic Games Store page.

Although Epic Games Store customers will be getting the game a month later, it remains on track for a February 2, 2024 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam, with early access still set for January 30.

Justice League: Kill the Suicide Squad has been hit with a few overall delays over the years, being originally set for 2022 before being moved to Spring 2023. In April, it was pushed back from May 26, 2023, to the current February date.

Still, as we get closer to February 2, we’ve been getting more and more glimpses at Rocksteady’s return to the Arkhamverse, with a new trailer debuting at The Game Awards and story spoilers already leaking from the recent closed alpha tests (which are still floating around, so be careful out there). The developer also recently confirmed that it will be getting an offline mode at some point after its initial release.

For more, check out our breakdown on how new footage addressed the biggest plot mystery at the center of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
