The Last of Us Part II Remastered Is Up for Preorder

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is set to release exclusively for PS5 on January 19. It’s more than just a simple remaster of the PS4 original, though. In addition to improved graphics, it will include a roguelike survival mode called “No Return,” as well as bonuses like developer commentary and a look at some cut levels that didn’t make it into the original game. It’s available to preorder now at a variety of retailers (see it at Amazon), in two editions. Have a look below.

Preorder The Last of Us 2 Remastered

The standard physical edition sells for $49.99 and is available to preorder wherever games are sold.

PS4 to PS5 Upgrade Will Be Available for $10

Starting January 19, owners of the PS4 version of The Last of Us Part II will be able to upgrade to the new version for $10 on the PlayStation Store. If you have a physical copy of the game, you’ll only be able to upgrade if you have a PS5 with a disc drive. Also, you’ll need to keep your disc on hand, because you have to insert the disc every time you want to play your upgraded game.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered W.L.F Edition (SOLD OUT)

The collector’s edition is called the W.L.F. edition. It’s available exclusively at PlayStation Direct, and it comes with the full game, plus the following digital items:

  • 47 total Society of Champions trading cards with 8 limited edition holographic cards
  • Washington Liberation Front patch
  • Set of four enamel pins
  • SteelBook display case

What’s New in The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered?

The biggest addition to The Last of Us Part II is “No Return,” a new roguelike survival mode. It lets you play as characters like Dina, Jesse, Tommy, and more as you fight through a randomized selection of locations and enemies in the game, along with boss battles.

As usual with remasters, the graphics get a boost in The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PS5. It will have native 4K in fidelity mode, and 1440p upscaled to 4K in performance mode. It also includes an unlocked framerate option when played on TVs that support VRR.

You can play through some of the early-development levels that were left on the cutting room floor of the original game. These include Sewers, Jackson Party, and Boar Hunt. There’s also a developer commentary track you can listen to while you play, a guitar free play mode that includes additional instruments, and a speedrun mode. Also included is full DualSense controller integration, with haptics and adaptive trigger support.

So yeah, it’s a lot. And you’ll likely have plenty of time to play it before the HBO show catches up to the content, seeing as The Last of Us season 2 is expected in 2025. If you haven’t checked out the first season yet, see our Last of Us season 1 review to see if it’s any good (it is).

Day of the Devs Shows New Games From Boyfriend Dungeon, Snipperclips Devs and More

Every year, I end up writing roundups of a lot of indie showcases. But inevitably, Day of the Devs showcases are always my favorites. Originally an annual in-person show in San Francisco run by Double Fine, Day of the Devs has added digital showcases to its lineup in recent years and just this year attached its in-person and digital show to The Game Awards.

Day of the Devs consistently shows off some of the most inventive, weird, and exciting upcoming indie games in the industry, and this year is no exception. I can’t pick favorites, so here’s a little tiny rundown of everything we just saw in the show, though I highly recommend watching each trailer yourself too!

Militsioner

Militsioner, from the game studio TallBoys, is described as a first person runaway sim, where the player is a wrongly-accused civilian attempting to flee a city under the watchful eye of a giant (like, truly massive) policeman. The trailer mixes healthy doses of absurdity, horror, and political commentary, with players able to take advantage of a “Tamagotchi-like mood system” to interact with anyone in the city…including the giant policeman. Maybe complimenting him enough will get him to ease up on you?

Nirvana Noir

From Feral Cat Den, the team behind Genesis Noir, comes a sequel of sorts in Nirvana Noir. While the aesthetic will be familiar to Genesis Noir fans, Nirvana Noir comes with a burst of bright color, and is described as “acid-tinged psychedelia.” It follows a watchmaker named Norman who “faced an impossible decision, and chose the impossible: to live two lives” with all the consequences and struggles that brings. Nirvana Noir is still a ways out, but has launched a crowdfunding campaign and is coming to Steam, and Xbox via Game Pass at a later date.

Thank Goodness You’re Here

You’ve heard of platformers, but Thank Goodness You’re Here is apparently a “slapformer” from developer Coal Supper that embraces British comedy. Set in a little town in the north of England, Thank Goodness You’re Here follows a salesman who has arrived to meet with the mayor – but has shown up too early and has tons of time to kill. So kill time he does, by getting up to all sorts of mischief around town with the locals and running silly errands for them. It’s coming in 2024.

Flock

We’ve seen Flock before, but never quite in this level of detail. Flock, from developer Hollow Ponds, puts the player on the back of a bird flying around gorgeous landscapes. As you travel, you can sing to and charm creatures you meet, eventually getting them to follow your flock through the sky. But many creatures are tricky and like to hide, and you’ll need to use close observation to categorize each creature and learn the best way to charm it into your group. Flock is coming to Xbox, Steam, and PlayStation in spring of 2024.

Kind Words 2

If ever a game deserved a sequel that statistically was probably not going to get one but then miraculously did anyway, it’s Kind Words – lofi beats to write to. The original Kind Words was a tiny but moving game where players could write letters to other random players about their worries, fears, wishes, and dreams, and receive kind responses back. Now, developer Popcannibal is expanding on the idea by setting Kind Words 2 in a city that gives players all sorts of different ways to communicate and share. You can write poetry in a coffee shop, share wishes to the night sky on a mountain top, or scream into the void quite literally. The Steam page is live now, and playtest signups are available.

Hermit and Pig

Do you like Mother 3? Well, we’re still not getting a localization of that in the States, but Hermit and Pig from developer Heavy Lunch Studio gives off pretty big Mother 3 aesthetic vibes. Its combat pulls from the Mother series as well as Pokemon, Paper Mario, and Street Fighter, asking players to choose methods of attack that seem like they would be impactful to each enemy. For instance, you can’t punch a cockroach – but you can stomp one! Even conversations are battles, in a way, since Hermit isn’t so great at talking to people and can take cringe damage from interactions gone wrong. Hermit and Pig is a “mushroom-infused” RPG about a man and his pig uncovering a conspiracy, and it‘s coming to PC in 2024.

Dome-King Cabbage

I’ve watched the Dome-King Cabbage trailer several times, and I’m still not fully sure what this game is, but I know that I’m really, really into it. Here’s what we do know. It’s developed by Cobysoft Co. and is supposedly a short visual novel set in the world of a monster-collecting RPG. Parts of the trailer looked a lot like an RPG Maker game, but those were interspersed with extravagant FMV sequences with surreal imagery and odd cartoon characters. Apparently the creator made it while stressed out teaching classes in Japan and laying on the floor using a bottle of detergent as a pillow. I don’t know what to make of all that, but whenever Dome-King Cabbage makes it to PC and Switch, I’m committed to playing it to see what it’s all about.

Ultros

From developer Hadoque, Ultros is a Metroidvania with true Metroid inspirations. You wake up after crashing your ship to find you’ve landed on a giant space uterus that contains an ancient demon named Ultros. Exploring the alien planet, you find yourself meeting alien creatures and planting seeds of new life as you also destroy enemies. Ultros is a game about cycles, with a “loop” mechanic that lets you start over at specific story moments to try and unlock new outcomes. It’s coming to PC, PS5, and PS4 on February 13, 2024.

Loose Leaf

The developers of Boyfriend Dungeon, Kitfox Games, have announced their next game: Loose Leaf. It’s a “tea witch simulator” that promises “the most in-depth tea brewing sim ever.” Players can control ingredients, temperature, stirring, steeping time, and more to try and make the best possible cup of tea. But it’s not just about tea – you’re a tea witch. So you’ll also be developing relationships with your customers, doing tarot readings, and helping them make sense of their problems.

Holstin

Holstin, from developer Sonka, is a psychological survival horror game set in a 90s Polish town haunted by something ominous. While it can appear at first glance to take a top-down view, Holstein is all about changing perspective. The camera can be rotated to reveal secrets in the environment, and while shooting enemies you can switch to an over the shoulder perspective for better aim. Holstein has two demos currently available now on Steam, with a third on its way in 2024.

Oddada

Developed by Sven Ahlgrimm and Mathilde Hoffmann, Oddada is a “no-pressure, roguelite music builder” where you can experiment by building little buildings and cities that double as musical contraptions. By placing houses on different landscapes, you can create your own miniature soundtracks.

Cryptmaster

Word game nerds, pay attention. Cryptmaster, made by Paul Hart and Lee Williams, puts you in the shoes of a revenant working for a necromancer who needs your labor to survive. What kind of labor? Word games. By guessing the names of items in chests around the underland you’re exploring, you obtain the letters to spell them, which you can then use to spell different words, regain the skills you knew in life, and solve other word-based riddles and puzzles. Cryptmancer has got a bit of RPG, a bit of dungeoncrawler, and a whole lot of word game in it, and it’s coming out in 2024 to PC.

Llamasoft – The Jeff Minter Story

Digital Eclipse, the creators of The Making of Karateka, announced a new interactive documentary entitled Llamasoft – The Jeff Minter Story. It’s just what it sounds like: an interactive deep dive into the life and career of designer and programmer Jeff Minter, who founded Llamasoft and led development on games like Polybius and Gridrunner. Digital Eclipse describes the documentary as a “virtual museum of design documents, playable games, and all-new videos” telling the story of the indie developer’s work over the 80s, 90s, all the way to today through four interactive timelines. The documentary will release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC at a later date.

Drag Her!

Drag Her! is a fighting game from the aptly-named studio Fighting Chance Games, where real-life drag performers fight one another. It’s full of camp and over-the-top drama, and all the characters are fully licensed, voiced, and approved by each respective drag performer being portrayed. Fighting Chance promises the fights will be both “forgiving to play and fundamentally stupid to watch,” but we’ll have to wait a bit for both – Drag Her! isn’t set for release until Q1 of 2025.

Braid Anniversary Edition

We’ve covered Braid Anniversary Edition’s announcement elsewhere on the site, but it got a new trailer during Day of the Devs, so here’s a reminder: Braid is getting an anniversary edition on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, PC, and Netflix on April 30, 2024, with Mac and Linux releases coming later. This version comes not just with the game, but with improved sound and new variants of the soundtrack, hand-repainted graphics, and a developer commentary track.

Open Roads

It’s been a while since we heard about Open Roads, the roadtrip game about a mother and daughter uncovering their family’s secrets. It was first announced in 2020 and was originally being developed under the Fullbright label, but after allegations came out about the company founder, the Open Roads team split off from Fullbright to develop it independently, with Annapurna still publishing. Now, Open Roads seems to have made significant progress, and is planned for release in February of 2024 for PC and consoles.

Resistor

From developer Long Way Home, Resistor is a narrative-focused “Car-PG” with classic racing game inspirations. It follows Aster, a young person growing up in a post-apocalyptic world divided into urban safe havens and dangerous wastelands. Aster’s mother is ill, and needs treatment in the city, but without citizenship, neither Aster nor their mother can get in. So Aster follows in their father’s footsteps as a racer and enters the Death Games, a dangerous series of races where the prize is permanent citizenship in the metropolis. Resistor is coming to PC, Switch, PS5, and Xbox at a later date.

Home Safety Hotline

As a fan of Hypnospace Outlaw, I was really into the premise of Home Safety Hotline, from Night Signal Entertainment. It’s a text-based horror game about a 90s call center where you play as a phone operator who’s an expert on home safety. People call you with household problems, like mice or spiders or leaks, and you have to advise them on how to fix their issues. You check emails, clock in, take calls, and do research via a 1996-style desktop work computer interface. But given this is a horror game, your calls aren’t going to be limited to simple rat problems for long, and there are weird things listed in your database that callers might ask about. Home Safety Hotline is coming in early 2024 to PC and other platforms.

Janet DeMornay Is a Slumlord (and a Witch)

I feel like the title is self-explanatory, but here’s a bit more info: you play as a tenant, and your landlord is a witch who likes doing the maintenance herself. This results in all sorts of weird magic problems, like doors that go nowhere or hallways you can get trapped in. Janet DeMornay is about puzzle solving, working to figure out how to get around your house and operate the strange machines Janet has left lying around, all while telling a queer story about found family. From developer Fuzzy Ghost, it’s coming out in 2024.

The Mermaid’s Tongue

You might know SFB Games as the developers of Snipperclips, or you might know them better from their Detective Grimoire series. Today, they announced the latest Detective Grimoire adventure: The Mermaid’s Tongue. Like the others, it’s a murder mystery detective adventure featuring the titular detective and his assistant, Sally, searching for clues and talking to suspects to uncover a mystery.

That’s everything from Day of the Devs, but more games are coming at The Game Awards tomorrow, and you can keep an eye on everything coming out of that show right here on IGN.

Batman: Arkham Trilogy on Nintendo Switch Includes Tribute to Voice Actor Kevin Conroy

Batman: Akrham Trilogy on Nintendo Switch pays tribute to voice actor Kevin Conroy who passed away in November 2022.

As reported by Eurogamer, once credits role on the first game in the trilogy, Batman: Arkham Asylum, a black and white drawing of Gotham appears with the text: “In memory of Kevin Conroy.”

Conroy starred as Batman himself in the Arkham trilogy, but was beloved beyond video games as the voice of the Caped Crusader in the 1990s Animated Series, The Killing Joke animated special, and more. He passed away on November 10, 2022 following a short battle with cancer.

Batman: Arkham Trilogy arrived December 1 as the games’ first release on Switch, though not the first time on a Nintendo console as Batman: Arkham City appeared on Wii U.

While IGN hasn’t reviewed the Switch versions, all three games were well-received upon their original launches, with Batman: Arkham Asylum setting a new precedent for superhero games. “Batman: Arkham Asylum is the greatest comic book videogame of all time,” IGN said in our 9/10 review at the time.

It’s sequel earned a 9/10 too, as IGN said: “Batman: Arkham City isn’t just better than Batman: Arkham Asylum, it’s better than most games on the market.” The final game received the same score: “Batman: Arkham Knight is an impressive game on almost every level, with non-stop variety and great action.”

Disney Lorcana: Into the Inklands to Add Locations, DuckTales, Treasure Planet, and More

Disney Lorcana: Into the Inklands is a brand new expansion headed to the trading card game in 2024 that will add locations for the first time alongside cards from such beloved properties as DuckTales, Treasure Planet, 101 Dalmatians, TaleSpin, and more.

Into the Inklands will be released first at local game stores on February 23, 2024, and will then arrive at mass market retailers on March 8, 2024. While it’s always great to get new character cards, the location cards are the big game-changer this time around.

While more details will be revealed on exactly how they work in the future, the team at Ravensburger has teased that fans will be able to collect such locations as Motonui from Moana, the Jolly Roger from Peter Pan, and Maleficent’s Castle from Sleeping Beauty.

What was shared, however, is that “some give bonuses when characters visit them, while others provide benefits just by being in play.”

In total, Into the Inklands will add over 200 new cards to Disney Lorcana, and some of the highlights shared are Pluto, 101 Dalmatian’s Perdita, DuckTales’ Scrooge McDuck, TaleSpin’s Kit Clouldkicker, and Treasure Planet’s Jim Hawkins and the RLS Legacy crew.

Lorcana’s lore will also grow with Into the Inklands, as narrative can be learned through the quotes and descriptive text on the cards. As for the story so far, Lorcana tells the tale of us players a.k.a. Illumineers as we are transported to this realm of Lorcana.

The First Chapter told that part of the story, and the most recent expansion, Rise of the Floodborn, followed what happened after we accidentally unleashed a flood of mixed ink that spread lore throughout the realm. The Illumineers then worked to return this lore to the Hall of Lorcana as a threat of an “ominous shadow storm” inched ever closer.

For more, check out how Goofy became Lorcana’s strongest card, the ‘Dark Magician’ Winnie the Pooh and more from Rise of the Floodborn, and the card that shows what would have happened if Beast never broke his curse.

Ex-Rockstar Dev Reacts to GTA 6 Trailer: ‘It’s Really Going to Look Like This’

A former developer at Rockstar has reacted to the GTA 6 trailer, bigging up the animation work and graphical improvements compared to the developer’s previous games.

Mike York worked as an animator at Rockstar New England for six years, helping to build GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 before leaving the company in 2017, so his opinion comes with a fair amount of authority.

In a video published to his YouTube channel, York runs through the GTA 6 trailer, pausing to discuss the increased density and detail within Leonida, Rockstar’s version of the state of Florida, and the neon-soaked streets of Vice City, Rockstar’s take on Miami.

According to York, what we see in the trailer reflects what fans can expect to experience when GTA 6 eventually comes out at some point in 2025.

“This is an in-game cutscene,” York said of the trailer. “A lot of the games you see are done with cinematics, and they cut to a scene and it’s not all in-game. It’s kind of pre-rendered and you see it. But everything you see in a GTA game is all done in-game. Every single cutscene. If you see that building way in the back, you can go to that building, you can climb it, you can jump off it. This game is very elaborate. That’s why it takes them so long to make.”

York goes on to talk about Rockstar staff working on hundreds of thousands of animations for previous games, a momentous task done in order to accommodate the player’s every whim.

Pointing to the GTA 6 trailer’s clip of a Vice City beach, York called it full of people all performing unique actions to make the virtual world feel alive. This is a Rockstar trademark only possible with hundreds of thousands of animations, York insisted.

Then, discussing the life-life nature of NPCs, some of which have ultra-realistic hair and even pockmarks on skin, York said he was impressed with GTA 6’s graphics.

“I’m really impressed with how far they’re bringing the graphics in-game,” he said. “A lot of times you see a cinematic – this is not that. When you play this game it’s really going to look like this. It’s going to look just like this. It’s going to be incredible. I can’t wait.

“Because the artists over there really know how to push the consoles and the hardware to the limits with their level of detail (LODs).”

York calls the GTA 6 trailer’s much-discussed bikini-clad woman an NPC (there is a fair bit of debate about this character’s identity, with some believing it’s protagonist Lucia with a different hairstyle and outfit), and trumpets the graphical quality Rockstar has applied to the people who populate the world.

The GTA 6 trailer was awaited with bated breath from the gaming industry and finally arrived with plenty of classic Rockstar satire. The 90-second trailer featured a ton of intricate details (here are 99 things IGN spotted) and plenty of references to wild and wacky real life events too. It also showed off GTA 6’s dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, and the internet has already grown obsessed over the latter. The GTA 6 trailer has already surpassed predecessor Grand Theft Auto 5’s reveal trailer’s views, reaching 101 million views in less than two days. It’s now the most-viewed video game reveal on YouTube over a 24 hour period, and the most viewed non-music video on YouTube in 24 hours.

While GTA 6 was revealed alongside a 2025 release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, PC players were left frustrated, though not necessarily surprised, that their platform was left off the list.

Cyberpunk 2077 Players Are Obviously Obsessed With Update 2.1’s Romantic Hangouts

CD Projekt Red has added romantic partner hangouts to Cyberpunk 2077 with Update 2.1 and players, obviously, are obsessed.

A scroll down Cyberpunk 2077’s subreddit will reveal several celebrations of the new feature, which lets the player invite their romantic partner over to their apartment for a date featuring dancing, chilling on the sofa, and so on.

IGN’s Cyberpunk 2077 Guide features a full explanation of how these quests can be initiated, with players able to invite Panam, Judy, River, or Kerry over to their apartment depending on who has been romanced throughout the course of the game.

“Just vibing with Panam,” wrote latrickster2 on Reddit, alongside a screenshot of her lying on the couch with protagonist V. “I’m in awe of how lifelike Cyberpunk can look and feel at times,” said inf0rmationist of the same scene. “This is also why the sequel should stay in first person mode.”

A post from MasamuneJPEG, which has 4,700 upvotes on Reddit, shows a short scene which comes as a new addition to Cyberpunk 2077 following the romantic hangout quest. While V looks into the mirror with a partner in their apartment, there’s a chance they’ll approach the player from behind and slap them on the butt.

“I’m loving this update,” wrote MasamuneJPEG. “Relationship goals,” added Intelligent_Creme351 in the comments, joined by Fro55t who said: “That is the funniest s**t ever. I love it.”

Cyberpunk 2077 are also sharing clips of dancing with their partners, laughing when the likes of Panam and Judy go particularly hard and other times when they seemingly cannot be bothered.

Update 2.1 adds a lot more than this, of course, as CD Projekt Red also brought the long-requested metro system, new motorbike mechanics, and much more. It even added the infamous sad Keanu Reeves meme.

The full patch notes were shared ahead of its release on December 5, the same day the Ultimate Edition of Cyberpunk 2077 was released. This will be the final big update in Cyberpunk 2077’s long and troubled history, though comes after CD Projekt Red won back the love of its fans following the game’s messy launch.

Cyberpunk 2077 Now Features the Sad Keanu Reeves Meme

CD Projekt Red has added the infamous sad Keanu Reeves meme to Cyberpunk 2077 with Update 2.1‘s new metro system.

Reddit users including aks31 posted images of the reference, which throws back to the 2010 photo in which Reeves was photographed by paparazzi while eating a sandwich alone on a bench, looking down at a bird.

Cyberpunk 2077 recreates the scene exactly with Johnny Silverhand, famously played by Reeves, during a scene players can occasionally encounter while riding the metro system. As long as players don’t use the metro to fast travel but instead sit and wait for added immersion, there’s a chance the scene will materialise.

In it, Johnny sits on the opposite side of the metro carriage while holding a hot dog in his silver hand, and looks down upon some paper birds that a Night City resident has left. “Even has the birds, cup, and hot dog,” Reddit user Prime_Addonexus posted excitedly.

“Johnny isn’t sad, he’s just hungry,” said aks31, referencing Reeves own explanation for the original photo, in which he said: “I had some stuff going on. I was hungry.” Reddit user Home_Productions was very excited too. “They did the thing,” they said.

Update 2.1 adds a lot more than this, of course, as CD Projekt Red also brought the long-requested metro feature itself, plus new motorbike mechanics, romantic partner hangouts, and much more.

2K Reveals Civilization Mobile Game, Moves to Calm Concern It May Impact Civilization 7

2K has announced Civilization: Eras & Allies, a standalone free-to-play mobile 4X social strategy game.

Civilization: Eras & Allies is actually the new name for a mobile game called Conquests and Alliances – 4X Empire Builder, which 2K had been testing in soft-launch form in several countries for the past few months.

2K is in the process of updated the game to a new name, Civilization: Eras & Allies, and said it planned to continue the testing and development process in soft-launch.

Here’s the existing blurb on Conquests and Alliances – 4X Empire Builder:

Embark on a journey through the ages of history and forge your path to glory in Conquests & Alliances – 4X Empire Builder. Step into the shoes of legendary leaders and command empires that have shaped the world. From the legions of Julius Caesar to the strategic genius of Sun Tzu, the choice is yours. Will you conquer kingdoms with an iron fist or lead your empire with benevolence? In this real-time strategy (RTS) game, the fate of empires rests in your hands.

Conquests & Alliances brings history to life like never before. Immerse yourself in intricate landscapes, witness the rise and fall of world empires, and experience the weight of your decisions as you navigate governance, warfare, and diplomacy. Command armies in real-time war battles, explore the technology, science, and military strength of different ages and cultures, and witness ancient wonders like the Great Pyramids and the Roman Colosseum as you lead your empire to victory.

Conquests & Alliances takes 4X games and empire building to the next level with time-limited game seasons that add a thrilling twist to your war conquest journey. Each season offers distinct challenges and opportunities to delve into the cultures and empires of different historical periods: from ancient civilizations to medieval kingdoms and beyond. Time-limited game seasons offer exclusive rewards and bonuses, as well as exciting competition. Unleash your creativity and discover unique abilities, leaders, science, and technology available during the season.

In a bid to calm community concern that this new mobile game may impact or delay development on the next mainline Civilization title, a 2K spokesperson told IGN developer Firaxis is working with an external developer on Civilization: Eras & Allies, although the company declined to reveal the identity of the developer when quizzed.

“As part of our continued efforts to explore and expand into new audiences, Civilization: Eras & Allies is in soft launch in limited territories. Civilization: Eras & Allies is a new standalone free-to-play mobile 4X social strategy game, featuring exciting new gameplay mechanics designed with the mobile social strategy gamer in mind.”

And here’s an official statement that stresses the continued focus of Firaxis Games on the next mainline Civilization game:

“As we announced earlier this year, Firaxis Games is in active development on the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise. We are working with an external partner specializing in mobile social strategy games to develop Civilization: Eras & Allies.”

Firaxis announced Civilization 7 earlier this year alongside news that former COO Heather Hazen had become the new studio head. Civilization 6 launched in 2016, and since then, the studio has released XCOM: Chimera Squad and, most recently, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, which reviewed well but sold poorly. Midnight Suns creative director Jake Solomon and longtime Firaxis boss Steve Martin both exited the company. Then, in May, Firaxis was hit by a round of layoffs that affected about 30 staff.

GTA 6 Trailer Has Already Surpassed Grand Theft Auto 5’s Reveal With More Than 100 Million Views

Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 trailer has already surpassed predecessor Grand Theft Auto 5’s reveal trailer’s views, reaching 101 million views in less than two days.

The highly anticipated debut trailer, which was due to premiere on December 5 but was posted on December 4 following a leak, has just crossed over onto the colossal 101 million number. And while that’s a lot of views under any metric, it also means the new trailer has passed GTA 5’s reveal from 2011, which accrued 100 million views over the last 12 years.

The GTA 6 trailer — which reintroduces fans to Rockstar’s take on Miami, Vice City, as well as the greater state of Leonida, a fictional Florida — had already dwarfed some pretty strong rivals in terms of trailer views. In fact, after just 15 hours, it had more views than the reveal trailers of Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild combined.

They each had 28.6 million, 23.1 million, and 16.1 million views respectively. And for further comparison, GTA 6’s trailer also dominates Hogwarts Legacy at 34.2, Baldur’s Gate 3 at 2.7, Final Fantasy 16 at 4.6, Resident Evil 4 Remake at 3.1, God of War Ragnarok at 19.4, and Spider-Man 2 at 30.8 million.

In fact, the GTA 6 trailer is record-breaking. The X/Twitter account for Guinness World Records confirmed it is the most-viewed video game reveal on YouTube over a 24 hour period. It’s also the most viewed non-music video on YouTube in 24 hours, easily overtaking the previous record set by YouTuber Mr Beast.

While the game was revealed alongside a 2025 release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, PC players were left frustrated, though not necessarily surprised, that their platform was left off the list.

They weren’t the ones a little peeved though, as several developers from Rockstar itself took to social media to express their frustration at the trailer leaking early. In fact, the entire industry shared their disappointment that the exciting moment was dampened. Several streamers were also hit with content strikes and takedowns in the wake of the leak.

And while most of those 101 million viewers likely cannot wait for Grand Theft Auto 6, some will seemingly never be satisfied. Why? GTA 7 was trending online as soon as the trailer dropped.

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He’ll talk about The Witcher all day.

99 Details From the GTA 6 Trailer

It’s no exaggeration to say we’ve waited years for Grand Theft Auto 6’s first trailer. And now it’s here – 90 seconds of Vice City, packed full of criminals, weirdos, and parties.

Every single shot tells a new story, and we’ve poured over the trailer frame-by-frame to find every single detail we can. So join us as we dive deep into the GTA 6 trailer.

01 – The trailer’s opening shot is pure Florida, the colours of the setting sun evoking the ‘Save the Date’ Tweet that Rockstar put out ahead of the trailer. You can even see the birds and the palm trees.

02 – The traffic on the road in the foreground includes a variety of GTA staples, including trucks, RVs, boats, and motorbikes. And on the side of a semi we can see the branding for Patriot, the beer that first appeared in Grand Theft Auto 4.

03 – Off in the distance we can see an incredibly tall broadcast mast, based on the real WTVY TV Tower. Fun fact: This is the highest point in all of Florida. We can only hope that we will be able to climb to the top and base jump from it.

04 – And right in the middle we can see the guard towers of a penitentiary. Cut to the next shot and we see its barbed wire-topped fencing. This seems to be the prison in which Lucia, our protagonist, has been locked up. As she looks outside the window, we can see the guard towers that stood out in the opening shot.

05 – Our first look at Lucia showcases the increase in detail over even Red Dead Redemption 2’s graphical heft. Her hair is among the most realistic we’ve seen in games, and the lighting from the window captures the texture of its waves.

06 – We see even more of this detail as the shot switches to show Stefanie, a member of staff at the Leonida Department of Correction. We can see the name of the facility printed across her lanyard, as well as the initials LDC on Lucia’s prison uniform.

07 – Stefanie askes Lucia if she knows why she’s here, which suggests that the game may open with Lucia commiting a crime and then being sent to the LDC. The key art shows Lucia wearing an electronic tag on her ankle, and so it seems likely that the majority of GTA 6 will take place after she has been released on probation.

08 – This overhead view of the ocean showcases not just the incredible water effects, but also a couple of varieties of marine life – to the left we see four dolphins skipping the surface, while to the right a shark can be seen lurking beneath the waves.

09 – The shot pans up to a packed beach. This could well be the GTA HD Universe’s equivalent of either Washington or Ocean Beach, two of the seafronts from GTA Vice City.

10 – Crossing the sky is a Maverick helicopter. Choppers were first introduced in Vice City and they feature prominently in this trailer, perhaps as a call back to GTA 6’s roots.

11 – Also soaring across the skyline is a Dodo plane, which we first flew in Vice City’s Dildo Dodo mission.

12 – The plane has a large banner in tow that reads ‘Nine1Nine Vice City – Why Sixty Nine when you can Nine One Nine?’. This is likely a riff on Miami’s real E11ELEVEN nightclub.

13 – The architecture along the beach and in the following shot is pure Miami, which of course is the place upon which Vice City is based. While many buildings are just following the real city’s vibe, there are others that are digital replicas of actual places. For example, to the right we can see a tower block with a distinctive hole in its roof, which is 500 Brickell – a twin-tower condo development on Brickell Avenue.

14 – We switch to a rural area likely inspired by the Florida Everglades. This showcases GTA 6’s range – much like in GTA 5, the city will be just part of the overall map. Here we can see an airboat sailing by, pointing to one of the forms of transport we’ll be able to use to navigate the wetlands.

15 – These wetlands are densely populated with more wildlife than has ever been seen in a GTA game before. Here we can see the Florida staples of flamingoes and crocodiles set on a backdrop of incredibly detailed foliage. This certainly brings back memories of the Bayou in Red Dead Redemption 2.

16 – On the beach we see the power of Rockstar’s crowd technology, with a huge amount of people and body types. Each person is doing something unique, from the guy helping someone to apply sunscreen, to this person taking a … let’s say juicy photograph.

17 – Oh, and it looks like dogs are definitely back, too. Say hello to this little beach ranger.

18 – In the sky above we can see a Sea Sparrow flying by, another reference back to the original Vice City. This helicopter outfitted with pontoons for landing on water could be found at the Vercetti Estate.

19 – The beach is covered with blue and white parasols that read ‘Vice Beach’, confirming that the location from the original Vice City has been reimagined for the HD Universe. This coastal area is GTA’s equivalent of Miami’s South Beach.

20 – Far off in the background is a building called “Bayfront Heights”, presumably a luxury apartment complex on the seafront. Could this be something we might be able to buy in GTA 6 Online?

21 – At another waterfront we see this scene of boats speeding past Port Vice City, as signified by the PVC logo on the blue shipping cranes. This is a homage to the opening of Michael Mann’s Miami Vice, which of course was one of the key inspirations for the original Vice City.

22 – Onboard the docked freighter are cargo containers for two legacy GTA shipping companies; Bilgeco and Jetsam. These were first introduced back in GTA 5.

23 – Here we see what appears to be Lucia going wild on the Vice City highway while a guy films her from his car in the left-hand lane. As we’ll later see, social media appears to be a significant part of GTA 6, and so maybe this is Lucia’s attempt at going viral on TikTok.

24 – On the road signs we see directions for Kelly County, VCI Airport, and Catalan Boulevard, Stockyard Downtown. Kelly County is likely the wider Florida area beyond the boundaries of Vice City, much like how GTA 5 had Blaine County after you drove past the limits of Los Santos. Meanwhile, VCI Airport seems to be the HD Universe’s name for what we used to know as Escobar Airport.

25 – Off in the distance we can see a glittering skyscraper with a hole in it – likely a reference to Miami’s famous Atlantis Condominium. The building was also featured in the original Vice City.

26 – This area with its gorgeous street art and sweet rides could be GTA 6’s reinvention of Miami’s Wynwood neighbourhood, an outdoor museum that’s home to colourful murals, craft breweries, and an eclectic culture.

27 – The vehicles here possibly point to extensive car customisation options – we can see huge rims, lowered suspension, and some really striking custom paint jobs.

28 – Parked alongside these cars is what appears to be a new variant of the Nagasaki Carbon RS, a bike that was initially exclusively available as part of GTA 5’s collector’s edition. In GTA 5 it’s only available in black, but it looks like GTA 6 will add new options such as this grey and white geometric design.

29 – It wouldn’t be GTA without a strip club. From the amount of singles covering the stage and floor, it seems like it’s definitely the start of the week – the sign on the balcony advertises ‘Make it Rain Mondays’. There’s no F1 theming here, so it seems unlikely that this is the Pole Position club from the original Vice City.

30 – There is a real punk/metal band of the same name, but it’s not yet clear if they’re involved in GTA 6. The back of the shirt lists the locations the Dolls played on the tour, including GTA 4’s Liberty City and Alderney City, the three cities from San Andreas – Los Santos, Las Venturas and San Fierro – and, of course, Vice City.

31 – In this shot of two guys shaking hands we can see the man in the foreground is wearing a dark blue bandana. This is worn in a similar style to the purple bandanas worn by the Haitians in the original Vice City, suggesting that those gangs may return.

32 – This overhead shot of the city is a good showcase of how accurate Rockstar’s version of Miami is. The area is practically identical to Biscayne Island, right down to the toll booths guarding the road coming in.

33 – A little further up the road we can see an illuminated tennis court, suggesting that sporty side activities will be making their return.

34 – If this shot doesn’t make you nostalgic for Vice City, then nothing will. This is the HD Universe recreation of the original game’s iconic boardwalk, complete with the Ocean View Hotel, which was Tommy Vercetti’s very first safehouse. You can even spot the retro yellow and white Oceanic car that was always parked outside.

35 – Next to it is the Boardwalk Hotel, inspired by Miami’s Colony Hotel.

36 – In the background, hanging from Hotel Dixon, we can see what appears to be flags for Peru and Haiti, once again signalling the Central and South American cultures that have made their home in Vice City.

37 – Parked out front of the hotels are a variety of GTA’s beloved hyper cars. Most recognisable is likely the Cheetah, this retro white machine inspired by the 1980s classic Ferrari Testarossa. Behind it is a blue Porsche-like Pfister Comet, while in front is a red hard-top Carbonizzare, based on the Ferrari F12. There’s also GTA equivalents of the Dodge Charger, Corvette C8, and more hiding among the traffic.

38 – On the sidewalk is a beggar with an iguana on his shoulder. He’s just the first hint at what kind of wild people we’ll bump into on our journey through the city.

39 – Nightclubs are a staple of GTA, so we’re not surprised to see one here. Owning clubs was a significant part of both the original Vice City and GTA Online, so perhaps we’ll be able to buy and manage this one?

40 – This aerial shot clearly shows off the Florida Keys, and once again points to GTA 6’s ambitions beyond the city limits.

41 – To the right we can see a bridge that is either derelict or under construction. Whatever the case, we feel pretty confident in saying that this will definitely be a car stunt location.

42 – And right at the top of the screen we can see another GTA aerial staple – a blimp. This one is actually based on the Fat Albert Blimp, which has patrolled the real Florida Keys since 1978 in an effort to stop drug smuggling.

43 – We switch to a rooftop party for an astonishing display of Rockstar’s hair technology, which falls and flows realistically across her shoulders. It’s not quite clear who this is flicking their hair, but it could well be Lucia herself – her face moles and hairstyle don’t match what we saw earlier, but that’s nothing a day at the salon can’t change.

44 – If this is Lucia then she’s definitely come into some money; that swimsuit has the SN logo of Sessanta Nove, an elite fashion brand that was first introduced in GTA 5.

45 – Looks like Vice City now has its own Hollywood-like sign. It seems like it’s been positioned to welcome visitors, as behind it we can spy the air traffic control tower of the VCI Airport.

46 – As previously mentioned, the trailer features a lot of social media clips. It’s not yet clear how it will be woven into both the story and gameplay, but what is obvious is that Rockstar will be poking fun at influencers and vapid online behaviour. Here we see an account called ‘Dad Bod Squad’ showing off an old guy surrounded by women half his age, with the caption poking fun at the idea of sugar daddies.

47 – The gold-rimmed ‘follow button’ suggests this may have been uploaded to Snapmatic, the GTA Instagram parody that had gold branding back in GTA 5.

48 – A post from POACH, AKA Protection of Animals and Controlled Huntings, shows how Florida’s wildlife will cause us all kinds of problems, even in urban areas. Additionally, this is just one of a handful of scenes that mimic real-life.

49 – Car culture will naturally be a huge part of GTA 6, and we can see a meet-up happening from two perspectives here; the aerial shot of the donut, and the social media video of the women dancing on the car’s roof.

50 – This security footage from a gas station showcases not just a ‘gator wandering where it shouldn’t be, but also the dense detailing of GTA 6’s interiors. From the shelves packed with products to the bakery display and lottery ticket counter, this convenience store is as sharply made as any exterior location. Again, this is another scene that mimics real life.

51 – Body cam footage shows what appears to be undercover police bursting through an apartment door. Off to the side is a ‘Beware of the Dog’ sign that features a pooch that looks a lot like GTA 5’s beloved Chop.

52/53 – Arrow Gasoline from GTA Online returns, but it’s the weather effects that really catch our eye in this shot. Florida is known to be scorching sun one minute and torrential rain the next, and we can see those storms brewing in these clouds.

54 – The social media account posting this clip is ‘PlanetLeonidaMan’. Leonida is the GTA version of Florida, and so Leonida Man is a riff on Florida Man, an internet meme about the unusual behaviour exhibited by the state’s locals. For a prime example, just watch this mostly naked man running away from the cops.

55 – That cop is an officer of the Leonard County Sheriff Department, as signalled by the car parked to the left of the screen. We’ve already spotted the sign for Kelly County earlier, and so it seems like the GTA 6 map will cover multiple counties as well as Vice City itself.

56 – The next clip, courtesy of GeneralCustardCannon, also makes reference to the idea of the Leonida Man, noting that “Only in Leonida is a crotch grab an apology for bad driving.” The act is, of course, caught on camera for everyone on Snapmatic and whatever the GTA version of TikTok is to see.

57 – There’s even more wild Leonida behaviour hinted at on a police billboard in the background, which states that someone is “wanted for panty sniffing”. Sounds like Vice City’s got real problems.

58 – Of course, the cops will want to approach with caution when they find their panty sniffer. As the crotch grabber’s shirt says, “We Bite Back in Leonida”. That’ll be another alligator reference, then.

59 – The road signs here point back to VCI Airport, Kelly County, Port VC, and the Keys – all locations we’ve seen in previous shots. But how do they all connect? We won’t know until we finally see the game’s full map. There’s also a sign for Vice Beaches, which suggests the multiple beaches from the original Vice City may all be present in some form.

60 – This truck sports glittery green bodywork, the secret to which is seemingly revealed by a window sticker: Vice Vinyl. It seems like vinyl wraps may be a big part of GTA 6’s car customisation, allowing funkier colours than just paintwork alone. There’s also a sticker for Rideout Customs, another hint to the businesses that may offer us customisation options.

61 – The guy riding on this truck is wearing a red bandana tied around his neck, which could be a reference to the Cuban gang who wore similar bandanas in the original Vice City.

62 – As much as none of us want to focus on an all-but-naked old man watering his garden, his character model does show off even more of the incredible detail Rockstar has packed into GTA 6, right down to the sunburn across his shoulders. And, of course, he’s just another example of the Florida Man meme.

63 – It wouldn’t be a satire of the southern state if there weren’t some hillbillies. Or, as we see in this social media clip from the ‘Mud Club’, ‘Thrillbillies’. These guys are here for some off-road racing, which hopefully we’ll be able to take part in.

64 – Pulling in from the right of the screen is the recognisable frame of the The Liberator monster truck. There’s a fan among the crowd, too, who’s wearing a Liberator t-shirt.

65 – This clip of a terrifying woman with dual hammers is a direct reference to the viral video of a woman from Chatsworth, Los Angeles, who went on a mini rampage with hammers in an effort to drive away her neighbour.

66 – We can see that this clip is a ‘Live’ video. Perhaps we’ll be able to scroll social media for livestreams and use them to locate events that are happening? We’d definitely want to speed over to Hamlet and find out what’s going on with this Karen…

67 – As this poor chap hits the ground we can see a bottle of Cerveza Barracho Beer in his hand – GTA’s parody of Corona.

68 – This billboard pokes fun at America’s bizarre pharmaceutical industry, with an ad for ‘Angstipan – America’s Favorite Dissociative’. It cures emotions, apparently, but the small print advises to use with extreme caution as the sudden urge to think could be life-threatening.

69 – The sign for the nearby mall details several new brands for the GTA universe, including Callus, Scala, and Alpha.

70 – Again, we see even more evidence of Rockstar’s improved technology with the wad of dollar bills Lucia holds in her hand, which appear to be individually rendered notes.

71 – Here we have footage from Weazel News, the GTA parody of Fox News. This comes from a 10:34 news bulletin, with a headline that details a man flipping his car after a dine and dash.

72 – We swap to another news organisation – this time the Spanish-language Mega Noticias – for a look at a character who appears to be based on the Florida Joker, a tattoo model who was arrested multiple times. His tattoos were based on Jared Leto’s Joker designs for Suicide Squad, and we can see that here in the Impentinent tattoo across this guys forehead.

73 – The headline reads “Confession written in ink (for tattoos)”, and explains his neck tattoos were what allowed police to identify him.

74 – The backdrop of this news piece depicts a big Florida-style police badge, with the writing in the bottom half referring to Vice Dale County. That’s another county to add to the list, then. This sounds like a really big map.

75 – Here we see what appears to be a motorbike gang, perhaps our first look at one of the gangs that Lucia will find herself working for.

76 – That same 10:34 Weazel News bulletin returns, this time showing an aerial view of the bikers tearing through the streets. Previous GTA games have reflected the events of the game via radio news bulletins – perhaps GTA 6 will take it to the next level and weave those events into TV news?

77 – A new video clip, this time from High Rollerz, shows a man wearing a Righteous Slaughter t-shirt. That’s a reference to the Call of Duty-like game played by Michael’s son in GTA 5. It seems like it’s had a sequel since then (or several, since it’s been ten years since we visited Los Santos), as this shirt has the ‘Blood Ops’ subtitle, a clear nod to the Black Ops series.

78 – The truck to the right of the screen has a Sound 4 Sound sticker in the back window and is packed full of vinyl and sound equipment. Perhaps this points to one of Vice City’s new radio stations?

79 – The green car in the left lane has its own window sticker – “Raised by Ride Out Customs.” It’s another hint to the car customisation options we’ll have.

80 – A street sign also points north to Waning Sands, likely another beach location on the map.

81-86 – Here we see Lucia and her partner geared up to do some crime, faces hidden by bandanas. As they march through the store we can see several well-known GTA brands, including eCola, Benedict Light Beer, CervezaCervezo Barracha, Logger Beer, and Phat Chips. Pißwasser returns, too, but in the new Nein alcohol-free variant.

87 – Everyone needs to know where the local weapons store is in a GTA game, and it seems like the Pawn & Gun could be a reliable merchant.

88 – According to the sign, this one is located in Port Gellhorn. Is this just one of many Pawn & Gun branches, or will we find a good old Ammunation if we head downtown?

89 – The car Lucia and her partner are driving is a Tulip, which was first introduced in GTA Online. It’s covered in bumper stickers, most of which the significance is not yet clear. One does say “Arrest Andrew”, so we’re fascinated to know what bad stuff Andrew has been up to.

90 – We get our best look at Lucia and her partner in this motel room, where it’s made pretty clear that they have some kind of romantic relationship. They promise to trust one another, which means – as every previous Rockstar game has proven – there’s going to be miserable betrayal somewhere in their futures.

91 – We still don’t know Lucia’s partner’s name, but what we do know is that Rockstar’s amazing hair tech is being used on his chest. Look how her hands run through it!

92 – The duo burst into a store, ready to rob. As revealed by the window stickers, this is an Uncle Jack’s Liquor store.

93 – If you’re ever planning on shopping at Uncle Jacks, just be aware that they will never accept cash stored in underwear. It’s on the sign, people.

94 – Also among the door signs is an advert for Dignity, which is available for the super low price of 99 cents.

95 – And a sticker that reads Petty Forever, a reference to the Tom Petty song used in the trailer.

96 – The song, Love is a Long Road, was likely chosen for its thematic link to the events of the game. It seems that Lucia and her partner will be in for a long and difficult journey as their relationship builds.

97 – Love is a Long Road was a hit in 1989, which is a nice call back to the iconic 80s setting of the original Vice City. Petty’s song Runnin’ Down A Dream is also featured on the Vice City soundtrack.

98 – And, finally, a release window. Coming 2025. We were all hoping for next year, of course, and we’ll all want to brace ourselves for a possible delay. But at least we know not to plan for it in 2024, and that new trailers will hopefully help tide us over on the way to the full release.

99 – Not revealed in the trailer but explained by a press release is that GTA 6 will release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Unsurprisingly, Rockstar has chosen to once again release only on console initially. There’s no word on a PC release yet, but if previous games are anything to go by, it’ll arrive the following year.

And that’s everything we spotted in the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer. Did you find anything we missed? Also, for more from IGN on GTA 6, check out all the references to the real world, and reactions to the leaked trailer.
