Defiant STALKER 2 Developers Say War in Ukraine, Russian Hackers, and Death Threats Won’t Break Them

Maksym Yanchyi, lead Xbox programmer on Stalker 2, lets out a deep sigh. It’s not the first time Mak, as he’s called by his colleagues, steadies himself before revealing the horrifying difficulties the developers of one of the most anticipated shooters of 2024 face on a daily basis. Right now he’s talking about Russian hackers and their ongoing attempts to breach GSC Game World’s security systems, the constant harassment, and even death threats that have come from the theft of personal information.

“That’s a very bad thing,” he says, downbeat.

GSC Game World’s public relations manager, Zakhar Bocharov remembers one of the company’s first security breaches, which took place in summer 2022 and resulted in the theft of personal information, including mobile phone numbers. Anonymous death threats directed at staff are now commonplace, so much so that the people behind Stalker 2 have somehow got used to them.

“You go to your messenger and it’s like, probably you need to look at something for work, even to check whether everything is okay in terms of your working tasks, and there is someone from an unknown number, like, ‘by the way, you should f***ing die.’ And then you’re looking next for what you need to actually do today,” Bocharov says.

Bocharov won’t go into more detail on these threats, but I can tell there are worse, even more worrying examples he could talk about. Such is life for the developers at GSC Game World, who are trying to build a video game in the middle of a war.

Stalker 2 is on Microsoft’s enormous booth at gamescom 2023. Here, for the first time ever, Stalker 2 is officially hands-on (check out IGN’s Stalker 2 preview for more). The game is rough, but it is real. GSC Game World is back in the spotlight with a message of defiance.

“For us it’s like a fuel now,” Yanchyi says. “Like okay, we have this problem, we’ll solve this problem. And the more problems we had from the start of the full-fledged invasion, from the full-fledged war, the more the team became stronger.”

“We taught ourselves to keep the shield,” Yanchyi continues, raising his arm above his head. “We are caring about each other, we are helping each other to find a new home in Prague or Ukraine. We are constantly Zooming with each other. Like, ‘how are you?’ Just these three words can matter to somebody today. Now we really understand through the experience that nothing can break our team, and we will deliver what we want no matter how many problems we have, because we have ourselves. And that’s the point. That’s everything we need to make what we want to make.”

‘It’s important to share this experience’

When I bring up the war in Ukraine, I see a sadness overwhelm both Yanchyi and Bocharov. But they do not shy away from talking about what’s happening, however painful it is. They know they will be asked about the war in almost every interview they do at gamescom 2023. For them addressing the war and its impact on Stalker 2’s troubled development is a golden opportunity.

“We are not tired of this question because we really think that it is important to share this experience,” Yanchyi says. “We want the world to know about this. And of course it is hard because our families… some of my family live in Ukraine, my parents live in Ukraine, and the same situation is with all my colleagues.

“The feeling that your beloved are in constant danger is pretty harming. It leaves a scar in yourself. It shouldn’t be the experience that any human nowadays should have, any child nowadays should have. But this is our reality: asking our colleagues if they’re alive or not each morning when the shelling starts, and ends.”

Over the course of our interview, Bocharov and Yanchyi tell me distressing details about the conditions under which Stalker 2 is made. So it has been ever since Vladimir Putin’s forces invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, displacing game developers across the country. Some of GSC Gameworld’s developers were forced to abandon the studio’s base in Kyiv and set up 1,400km west in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. Some of the staff have family still in Ukraine. Some of the staff stayed in Ukraine, or moved to other parts of the country. Of the 360 or so people working at GSC Game World, around 160 are in Ukraine.

“These 160 people,” Bocharov says, “anything can happen to any of them at any moment.”

Some staff, Bocharov tells me, have joined the fight itself. He calls them “our heroes”.

I don’t want to sound too dark, but I don’t want to sugarcoat it either

Bocharov tells me that sometimes, during a Zoom meeting, someone who was down to attend fails to show up on time. They give it a few minutes. After 10 minutes, people start to worry, so they send direct messages. Sometimes there is no answer. A call. No answer. Two, three hours go past. As people start to panic, the person will finally reply to say they are safe, to apologize because they were forced into a bunker after the shelling began, to explain that their phone ran out of battery. People sigh in relief then get on with their work day. The person leaves the bunker and returns to their work, as if nothing happened.

“It’s a stress you get used to because human beings, they tend to adapt, but at the same time it’s adapting to horrific things,” Bocharov says. “Motivation can come from different things, even probably not so bright ones. It can come from anger as well, or from your dedication to show someone what’s your worth, even if they’re making the worst possible conditions.

“So I don’t want to sound too dark, but I don’t want to sugarcoat it either. It’s something unusual happening here. The circumstances are extremely unusual.”

Beyond the emotional scarring, GSC Game World faced a distressing relocation that significantly impacted development of Stalker 2. In January 2022, the studio delayed Stalker 2 to the end of that year to polish the experience. A month later, Russia invaded. The relocation of staff began and work on Stalker 2 was put on hold.

Before the war, GSC Game World used its own motion capture studio in the Kyiv office to help build the game. After deciding to make narrative changes to the game, it had to build a new motion capture studio in the Prague office. Bocharov slams the desk between us with his fist as he recalls the impact the war had on the development of Stalker 2.

“We need a new motion capture studio. We need to build it. When we build it, we need to test it. When we test it, we can do these changes in motion capture. The full-fledged war starts, and we cut off Russian voiceover. Then we decide to dedicate additional time, money, and value to English voiceover. And we decide to hire English speaking actors to do so. We hire them, we need to do the voiceover, we need to have an audio studio, we need to rebuild the audio studio in Prague. We need to start doing it there.

“So we relocated, and it’s a stressful environment, but I can continue working. Some people are trashing us online because of, ‘what about your security measures with all the leaks and stuff like that?’ Basically it’s two different systems now in terms of sharing data between Ukraine and Czech Republic. Your work, it’s much more complicated and you need to protect it at every step. And of course there is much more chance of a security breach when you’re basically separating that between the countries.”

Stalker 2 is a heavily delayed video game. Of course it is. At gamescom 2023 GSC Game World announced another delay, this time to early 2024. Even this new release window feels ambitious. Bocharov says Stalker 2 is now content complete, with a polish period remaining. The studio insists it’s still targeting a level of graphical prowess suggested by Stalker 2’s eye-catching gameplay video released back in 2021. It still believes it can pull this thing off, realise its ambition, show the world what it’s truly capable of. “We are getting there,” Bocharov says, “but there can be certain humps on the way.”

It seems remarkable that GSC Game World has normalised video game development under such circumstances, but for the people at the studio, Stalker 2 is now more than a video game. It is a symbol of Ukrainian defiance in the face of the Russian invasion, something to rally behind, something that tells the world Ukraine is still here, still fighting, still alive.

“After the full-fledged invasion of Ukraine started, working on this project, Stalker 2 Heart of Chernobyl, it became more than working on the project, it became the national product for us, the national idea,” Yanchyi says. “It is what we engineers and artists can do to support Ukraine on the worldwide game development arena, on the entertainment arena, to show the world that Ukraine has lots of talents, lots of professionals, which can bring new experiences to the players. And the main idea is that every Ukrainian now does what he or she or they can do to support Ukraine.

“Some of our heroes are fighting on the battlefields. We have colleagues which are now at the battlefields. And some of us are helping with foundations for the army. And some of us, including myself and my team, we are working hard to deliver this project, which all Ukrainians are waiting, and we want to keep this Ukrainian identity inside the project, for it to tell some of our stories. We are putting our emotions, our hearts into the project.

“So this is more than a business for us. Way more.”

Starfield Includes At Least Two References to Skyrim’s Most Famous Line

Starfield is finally out and, as you’d expect, there are references to Bethesda Game Studios’ previous projects, most notably The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

Bethesda’s space RPG includes at least two references to one of the most iconic lines in Skrim. As reported by VG247, redditor sKinevi1 noted the first reference is a Colonist NPC that states how he used to be an explorer, too, but needs to dive more into details.

The quote refers to the line in Skyrim where guards and soldiers tell a brief yet tragic story of how an arrow in the knee cut their adventurer lives short. At the same time, redditor Mr_Abs725 points out how Starfield’s Level 4 “Crippling” skill shows an arrow in a knee, which can be seen below.

Some other notable references from Bethesda’s previous games include the Adoring Fan (first appearing in Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion) returning as one of the starting optional traits. The Kids Stuff trait gives the player parents who look like the created character, a feature that was previously included in Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 where the father and son’s looks are based on your playable character.

GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE and NieR: Automata Team Up For an Exciting Event

Level Infinite’s third-person shooter GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE has launched to get an exciting collaboration with SQUARE ENIX’s award winning NieR: Automata on September 1, 2023, and it looks to bring the game’s characters 2B, A2, 9S, and Pascal into the world of NIKKE. The event will officially run from September 1 through September 27 on PC and mobile and will come with a story that explains how these two universes collide

Both NIKKE and NieR: Automata feature androids fighting against impossible odds to save humanity and their homes, so it will be interesting to see what happens when they finally meet. Will 2B, A2, and 9S cause the NIKKEs to obtain self-consciousness? Will they grow together for good or will problems arise that threaten everything?

Besides the blended storyline, players will also be rewarded for participating in this collaboration. Some of the exclusive rewards include Pascal as a free SR character, 2B and A2 costumes that will unlock after players get them as playable characters, two free Avatars (white frame and YoRHa frame), and free wallpaper. 2B and A2 will also be getting their NieR: Automata Metamorphic Damage Costumes that will be unlocked as long as 2B and A2 are in their recruitment. Fans of NieR: Automata will be delighted to know their favorite characters will also be getting an updated look that retains the original NieR’s style and applies it to NIKKE’s dynamic technology that will make the characters even more vivid. 2B will get a brand-new weapon design that can only be seen in NIKKE.

While all the details have yet to be revealed about what fans can expect from this team-up, it is confirmed that 9S’ hacking game from NieR: Automata will make its way into NIKKE.

Furthermore, there will be a special coordinated operation called Gatekeeper that will see an exclusive boss appear in the collaboration event’s co-op mode. As if this collaboration wasn’t already a perfect match, fans will also appreciate that NieR: Automata’s 2B and NIKKE’s Rapi both share a voice actor in Yui Ishikawa.

GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE is an immersive sci-fi RPG shooter that features an extensive roster of maidens that players can create the ultimate anime girl squad with, complete with guns and unique sci-fi weapons that are capable of taking down any foe in the right hands. Oh, and these NIKKE are artificial soldiers created to save humanity in a post-apocalyptic future on an Earth that was invaded by mechanical aliens.

NieR: Automata was first released in 2017 from PlatinumGames and Square Enix and is set during the war between alien-created machines and human-created androids. What made NieR: Automata so special was the fact that players would need to complete multiple playthroughs to experience the entire story, which allowed them to view specific events from different characters’ perspectives.

In IGN’s NieR: Automata review, we said it is a “crazy, beautiful, and highly entertaining journey full of nutty ideas and awesome gameplay. It may not include the most sensical story or compelling characters, but its frenzied combat — coupled with beautiful visuals and a stunning soundtrack – make it too much fun to pass up.”

Goddess of Victory: NIKKE is free-to-play and can be downloaded on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and the official websitefor PC version. For those playing on the PC, they can expect a more smooth gameplay experience! NieR: Automata, on the other hand, is available on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

The Goddess of Victory: NIKKE and NieR: Automata collaboration will run from September 1 through September 27 on both PC and mobile and will feature a new story, exclusive rewards, and new art for your favorite characters.

Starfield Modders Have Already Added Missing Features Like DLSS Support and FOV Slider

Starfield is now available for those with early access and modders quickly worked to add several missing features including support for Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) tech and an FOV Slider.

At the time of writing, three users on NexusMods have created a mod that adds support for DLSS and Intel’s Xe Super Sampling (XeSS) tech, PureDark, who previously promised to add DLSS support in in addition to LukeFZ and 2077v2.

Another feature missing at launch was a Field of View slider, which is currently not available on the game’s settings on the PC version. Fortunately, several individuals have already added a FOV Sliver into the game, including NexusMods user Hellstorm102.

Stardew Valley Cookbook Announced With Recipes for Pink Cake, Strange Buns, and More

Stardew Valley is set to get its very own cookbook which will allow fans to experience the tastes of over 50 recipes from the beloved farming RPG when it releases in spring 2024.

“I would like to announce the upcoming Stardew Valley Cookbook,” read a post on developer ConcernedApe’s X account. “It’ll be out next spring, and includes 50 recipes from the game such as Pink Cake, Salad, and the Strange Bun,” it said.

Food is a cornerstone of Stardew Valley experience. Players hoping to get the most out of the short in game day can replenish energy by consuming the pixelated snacks, while those slogging their way through the sleepy town’s monster-infested mines rely heavily on meals to replenish health lost in combat. It is also part of the social fabric of the game. Recipes for new dishes can be given by grateful NPCs, which in turn can be cooked and given to villages to strengthen the bond between them and the player.

According to the post, and judging by the cover, the Survival Burger, Lucky Lunch, Pink Cake, and the questionable Strange Bun will all likely be featured in the book.

The post announcing the recipe book already has 47,000 likes and almost 10,000 reposts, with many fans taking to the comments to express their excitement at the prospect of discovering the canon tastes of their favourite in-game dishes.

In an updated 2018 review IGN gave Stardew Valley a 9.5/10, describing it as a “beautiful, fun game” that has benefit from several major updates that have helped nurture it “into an even greater farming RPG, with a better base for new players, and plenty of new goals for seasoned farmers”.

Starfield Inventory Tips: How to Expand Your Storage and Not Be Encumbered

One of the things you’ll learn real quick in Starfield is that your pockets are only so deep. And by that I mean, unless you’re very particular about what you loot, you are going to find yourself encumbered a whole lot. Increasing your storage space both on your person and on your ship should be an early priority, along with learning some easy workarounds so don’t have to play the game of “what should I throw away so I can fast travel back to my ship,” Here are our tips on how to increase and deal with Starfield’s Storage.

You Have an Infinite Storage Locker in The Lodge

It may not be obvious, and the game definitely never tells you this, but let’s get this out of the way first: You have unlimited storage at The Lodge on New Atlantis. You can leave stuff in your personal safe in your bedroom at the Lodge, once you become a member of Constellation through the main quest. Take the stairs up, head through the third door on the right, go all the way down the hall, take a left, and it’s the second door on the left. Or if you need a second box of infinite storage, there’s one right on the desk in the basement in the form of an unassuming storage box.

Increasing Your Personal Storage

When it comes to increasing your own inventory space, there’s really only one way to do so… Well one that doesn’t involve hunting down a whole bunch of Freestar Collective Magazines. You’ve gotta add to the Weight Lifting skill when you level up. At the first level, it’ll increase your max weight by 10 kilograms, which isn’t much, but will at least let you equip a few extra weapons, giving you some other options if you run out of ammo with one of your main guns in a fight.

You can add more points into the Weight Lifting skill, but in order to do so, you’ll first have to level it up. Fortunately, the way to level up this particular skill is actually fairly easy: You just need to sprint a certain amount of distance while at 70% or higher carrying capacity. Chances are, you’ll do this without even trying to, but nonetheless, make sure to keep an eye on your equip load and make sure that if you do want to further this skill along, you’re carrying a relatively heavy load and running around a whole bunch.

By maxing out this skill, you’ll be able to increase your personal weight limit by a total of 100kg, which makes it a very worthwhile investment if you plan on using heavy weapons, heavy armor, and plan on hauling a bunch of heavy resources. Or maybe you just don’t want to deal with the pain in the ass of being over encumbered, which hey, I get it. If that is the case though, and you’re just carrying around a bunch of non-essential items that you don’t want to just throw away, there’s another option.

Using Your Companion as a Mule

In classic Bethesda fashion, your companion can also double as a secondary backpack. If you find yourself over encumbered and you just need to offload a few things to allow yourself to fast travel, the easiest option is to chat with your companion, ask them to trade with you, and then just give them whatever you don’t want to carry.

Then when you get back to your ship you can store the excess items in your ships cargo hold. There’s a handy feature that lets you automatically drop off all resource materials, which you absolutely should because they’re easily among the heaviest things you can carry and all that weight adds up quickly.

That said, if you do that, you’ll run into another problem, which is:

Increasing Your Ship Storage

Your ship has a storage limit as well, which you will likely quickly reach if you’re just offloading all of your resources into your cargo hold. In order to increase your ship’s cargo capacity, you’re going to have to delve into some ship customization.

You can find a Ship Services Technician near the landing pad of virtually all of the big cities in Starfield. Talk to them and you can either outright purchase a bigger, better ship with more storage, you can modify the ship you currently own and upgrade your cargo hold, or you can build an all new ship from scratch.

In order to increase your ship’s cargo capacity, you’re going to have to delve into some ship customization

All of these options cost either a lot or an obscene amount of credits. The cheapest option is to just upgrade your existing ship, but be aware that it’s not as simple as just slapping on a larger cargo hold and then calling it a day. When you open up the ship builder and start editing your ship, the first thing you’ll find is that there’s nowhere to actually put a larger cargo hold. So the first thing you’ll have to do is make some space for it. I’d recommend deleting the currently existing cargo hold, adding a structural mount in its place, and then placing however many side mounting cargo holds you want on the sides.

This will make your ship too heavy to properly maneuver, so you’ll need to upgrade or add new engines. Upgrading your engines is the cheaper and easier route, but if you’d prefer to go big: grab your two engines and pull them out, place large engine bracers in their place, reattach the engines you already had, and then add two more rear facing engines, and you should be good to go.

If you do this though, you will likely make your ship too heavy to grav jump, so you’ll need to either upgrade the one you have, or delete it and add on a better one. This is all of course, just an example of something I did, and you’re free to customize your ship however you’d like. You can also get more out of the storage you currently have on your ship by investing in the skill “Payloads,” which is in the second tier of the Tech skill tree. One point will increase your cargo holds’ capacity by 10%, while maxing it out will increase it by 50%.

Other Storage Tips

If you still don’t have enough storage, you little space hoarder you, or maybe you’re just looking for a way to save on some credits, you can also use the captains locker on your ship, which is located just to the right of the cockpit and can store 40 kilograms of cargo. If you find Freestar Collective Magazines, you can increase your storage space by five for each magazine you find.

And finally, if you want to be truly chaotic, you can also just… drop stuff on the ground and they will stay there right where you left them. In your ship, in your home, or on an outpost. Like a dang child. I hope your mother doesn’t see this.

  • Set Character Level – Your character is set to the specified level.

  • Spawn Items, NPCs, and Creatures at your Position – The specified item or creature will be spawned directly in front of your character.

  • Pay Off Bounties – Remain out of jail, keep all stolen items, and pay off any outstanding Bounties for a specified Faction.
    • Cheat Code: player.paycrimegold 0 0 <Faction ID>
  • Open Character Creator – Opens the character creator menu, allowing you to adjust your character’s appearance, name, background, and traits.
    • Cheat Code: showlooksmenu player 1
  • Remove Skills, Traits, and Backgrounds – The specified skill, trait, or background will be removed from your character. See our Perk, Trait, and Background IDs below.
    • Cheat Code: player.removeperk <Perk ID>
  • Add Skills, Traits, and Backgrounds – The specified skill, trait, or background will be added to your character. Do note that you will need to have a spare perk, trait, or background slot available in order to add a perk to your character. So, be sure to remove a perk first before attempting this command.

We recently learned a lot about Super Mario Bros. Wonder thanks to Thursday’s Nintendo Direct, our first hands-on preview, and our interview with producer Takashi Tezuka and director Shiro Mouri. But maybe you’d like to see more?

In addition to new footage and other info, Nintendo released the 64 Super Mario Bros. Wonder screenshots below. Check them out and bask in all those lovely colors.

The screenshots highlight all the way that Nintendo manages to infuse its upcoming platformer with the sense of joy and (ahem) wonder that the series is known for. It also includes glimpses of the world map, the full cast, and the Elephant Mario power-up that everyone seems to like so much (but Shigeru Miyamoto didn’t like so much).

Super Mario Bros. Wonder was first announced earlier this year. It’s a fresh take on the New Super Mario Bros. formula, bringing with it online co-op multiplayer and other features. It definitely leans into the weirder side of Mario, even allowing you to play as a Goomba.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the capper to a banner year for the plumber, which has also seen the opening of a new theme park and an animated movie that has grossed more than a billion dollars. Not too bad! It’s slated to launch October 20 on Nintendo Switch.

G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra Is a Retro-Style Beat ‘Em Up Set for PC and Nintendo Switch

The side-scrolling beat ’em up revival continues, this time with G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra.

G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra, in the works at Monster Harvest developer Maple Powered Games and published by Freedom Games, is due out during the first quarter of 2024 on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and Nintendo Switch.

It features famous G.I. Joe characters such as Duke, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, and Roadblock, who battle Cobra Commander and his goons across the likes of Cobra Island and the Pit. There are Troopers, Ninja Vipers, HISS Tanks, the Crimson Guard to fight. There’s a story mode and arcade mode, solo play and online and couch co-op for up to four players.

Gameplay revolves around combos, dodging, and parrying. There’s hand-drawn pixel art and classic cartoon cutscenes, with an arcade-inspired soundtrack from Tee Lopes (Sonic Mania, TMNT Shredder’s Revenge, Streets of Rage 4 – Mr. X Nightmare DLC) and Crush 40’s lead vocalist Johnny Gioeli (Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020).

“G.I. Joe is one the most iconic brands from the 80s and it was the golden era of arcade games,” said Eugene Evans, SVP Digital Strategy and Licensing at Hasbro.

“To celebrate the growing popularity of retro themed games we’re thrilled to partner with Maple Powered Games and Freedom Games to bring G.I. Joe fans our first ever Hasbro Retro Arcade experience in this exciting interpretation of a classic 2D beat ‘em up.”

The announcement of G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra follows the success of recently released side-scrolling beat ’em ups, such as Streets of Rage 4, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge, and Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons.
