The weekend is here folks, which means it’s time to get cracking with some gaming. Before we put our feet up, however, let’s recap what’s been going on in this very quiet, unevenful week in the world of Nintendo (chortle!).
Yes, in actuality, it’s been a ruddy busy one, with Nintendo finally officially revealing the Switch 2. Not only that, but the debut trailer also gave us a brief, yet tantalising look at a brand-new Mario Kart game, affectionately titled Mario Kart 9 for now.

This week during the Switch 2 reveal, Nintendo reconfirmed backwards compatibility with the original system.
If you’re curious to know the reasoning behind this feature, Game File’s Stephen Totilo got a response from a Nintendo representative – explaining how it was simply the “best direction” when the Switch was already played by “many consumers”.

The Switch 2 has dominated the headlines over the past few days, but there’s been plenty of other stuff going on in the world of video games this week.
On the Mortal Kombat front, NetherRealm revealed the official gameplay trailer for Conan the Barbarian featuring the likeness of Arnold Schwarzenegger, with the voice work apparently done by Chris Cox (the same guy who voiced Arnie as the Terminator in Mortal Kombat 11).

You probably already know this, but the Nintendo Switch 2 was officially unveiled to the world yesterday. And you’ve also likely noticed that we haven’t stopped thinking about it since.
The brief trailer — coming in at two minutes and twenty-one seconds — seemingly hinted at a few features while not giving away too much. We got a look at the new design, the bigger size, and what seems to be mouse functionality on the Joy-Con. But we think there’s a bit more hiding in plain sight. So, the lovely Alex and Felix on our YouTube channel have jumped head-first into the trailer and pulled out the juiciest details that might be a bit less obvious.

Atari has released an end-of-year business update regarding its work and performance during 2024; its first full calendar year in executing its new retro-focused strategy.
Crucially, things seem to be looking good for Atari, with the company highlighting several launches during 2024, including the likes of Yars Rising, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, The Thing: Remastered, and RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic.

The floodgates open.
Following the official reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, accessory maker Nacon has revealed a range of new products for the upcoming console.
If you’re familiar with the kind of stuff manufacturers would make for the original Switch, then very little here will come as a surprise. That said, the premium-looking steering wheel that houses both of the Switch 2’s Joy-Con looks rather swish; we’d love to take that one for a spin.

As exciting as new console launches are, it’s become increasingly difficult in recent years to secure certain systems on release. Sony’s PlayStation 5 was hugely impacted by this coming off the pandemic, so how will it be for Nintendo’s Switch successor this many years on?
Bloomberg has released a new report about the possible shipment data for the Switch 2 in the first year of its life, and according to Robin Zhu – an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, Nintendo’s supply chain is ready to sell more than 20 million units in 2025.

Hollow Knight fans have been waiting over five years now for Silksong, so when will we hear more about it? While the best guesses have been shared time and time again, the next date fans have discovered actually lines up with Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct.
Hollow Knight fan and YouTuber ‘fireb0rn’ highlights how a member of Team Cherry has changed their social media profile to a picture of chocolate cake after also teasing in a post how “something big is coming”. Long story short, someone ended up reverse image searching the picture of the cake and the first search result was for a recipe with the date “2nd April” at the top of the page. The stop-gap generation.
And so it begins. Nintendo has pulled back the curtain on its next generation of hardware to reveal… exactly the thing everyone expected.
Officially revealed earlier today following months — no, years — of rumours, speculation, and leaks, the Nintendo Switch 2 is, on the face of it, what most people wanted. It’s the same basic concept, just a bit bigger, with more power and some improvements, plus hints at a couple of gimmicks not explicitly detailed in the trailer. We also glimpsed a few seconds of a new Mario Kart.
