2 the max.

One pleasant surprise of the Switch 2 launch, beyond the advertised upgrades — free and otherwise — to various Switch games, has been seeing how some Switch games that once struggled to hit their frame rate targets have gotten a nice boost on the new console.

It seems that Switch 1 games with unlocked frame rates are getting a largely untouted bump in the performance department, with games like the nigh-on unplayable Batman: Arkham Knight — which we called “one of the worst ports we’ve ever played” — now becoming a viable option on Switch 2. Loads times have also shot down for some titles. Result!

A mouse-t play.

Listen. I’m not gonna dive into this review of Fortnite on Switch 2 with any ideas of pretending to know everything, or even understand anything, about a game that’s grown from hastily retooled battle royale to…well…it looks kind of like Roblox now, in all honesty. What on earth is going on here?

Yes, since the last time I launched into a game of Epic’s Fortnite, it’s changed, I think it’s fair to say, immeasurably. The menu system that you boot into is incredibly confusing if you haven’t been keeping up with the changes, and looks exactly like the mess of game modes, fan content, and madness I watch my sons syphon through on a daily basis in the Roblox Corporation’s behemoth.

“It should have been an OLED screen from the get-go”.

One aspect of the Nintendo Switch 2 that has generated a lot of interest is its display. While Nintendo released an OLED model of the original Switch, which massively improved over the launch model’s LCD screen, for Switch 2, it has opted to return to LCD technology.

On the whole, it’s fair to say that the decision has gone down fairly well; as we reported after our first hands-on sessions, the panel used in the Switch 2 is leagues ahead of the one we got back in 2017, with superb brightness and bold colours.

“Mario Kart World is beautiful”.

Mario Kart World is proving to be a big hit with fans, thanks to its range of tracks, the open-world mode and its online features. It still has the accursed Blue Shell, of course, which you can thankfully dodge if you know what you’re doing.

This weapon has been ruining friendships for years and is one of the many tactics the Mario Kart series employs to avoid having a single player dominate the race. When used, it dashes to the front of the pack and takes out the lead driver, evening the odds.

Sonic experts are on the case.

Last week, SEGA unveiled the first batch of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds guest characters. This includes not only characters like Hatsune Miku but also Steve, Alex and Creeper from Minecraft. There are some other supposed leaks still doing the rounds as well.

Now, the official Sonic social media account has sent Sonic fans into a frenzy once again, with a new piece of artwork apparently featuring a very familiar-looking symbol. The focus here is on what looks exactly like the Triforce from the Legend of Zelda series.

When it comes to carry cases, many people swear by ‘official’ options, and with good reason; when Nintendo is tasked with making a case for its own console, you’d assume the company would produce a decent product.

That’s certainly true of the official Nintendo Switch 2 Carry Case ($39.99 / £20.99), which is one of the two options currently being offered by Nintendo itself (the second is a larger, all-in-one option that costs a bit more).

New content ink-oming.

Here’s a Switch game we thought would get a little boost on Switch 2 — Splatoon 3! While it wasn’t part of the initial free update line-up, Nintendo (via the Nintendo Today! app) has announced that the game will be receiving a Switch 2 update later this week, on 12th June.

That’s not all, though — 30 new weapons in the form of the Splatlands Collection (based on older weapons), a raise on freshness caps, new badges to earn, and a new stat in Anarchy Battle which will help with matchmaking.
