Gears Of War: Reloaded is a Steam remaster of the original cover shooter

I once got in a heated debate with Graham over whether the chest-high walls in the Gears Of War series could accurately be called ‘massive’. The Gears men are massive, I argued. So it stands to reason that any wall that could provide adequate bullet cover to a massive man must itself be a massive wall. No, said Graham. They’re famously normal size walls, hence why the massive men have to squat down like they’ve just had a bowling ball lobbed at their kidneys. Well, we can finally examine the true scale of these walls – in 4K no less – with Gears Of War: Reloaded. A “faithfully remastered” version of the 2006 large man action game, coming to Steam on August 26th this year.

I couldn’t find a trailer so enjoy this extremely old one and just imagine it looks nicer. Bit nicer. Little bit nicer. That’s it, now you’re thinking like a customer!

The Shadow Syndicate mixes a bit of LA Noire, a touch of Max Payne, and furries to make a game you should keep your eye on

Do you ever think to yourself, “gee, I wish that LA Noire actually looked like a noir film and also everyone is a furry”? Then boy howdy do I have the game for you: The Shadow Syndicate. It just got announced yesterday at the Gamescom Latam showcase, and I should say it’s not exactly like LA Noire in that you don’t have to try and read the faces of motion capture actors overperforming their hearts out. What it does have is some detective work, gunplay, and even some Max Payneish bullet-time. How can you not be into that mixture?

There’s a new Honkai game on the way with characters from Star Rail and Impact 3rd, and it sure does look like a Pokemon clone

I’m not sure how they have time for it, but as part of a livestream held earlier today, HoYoVerse revealed yet another new game. This one isn’t a completely new world, it’s actually another Honkai game, though right now it doesn’t have a name. A very short teaser was shared for it which literally just called it a “brand new Honkai game”, but there were a couple of signs that it was one anyway. Namely, the presence of a couple of characters, Kiana and Blade.

No, sorry, put the party poppers away, Chrono Trigger isn’t getting a remake, as far as anyone knows anyway

Well, this is all a bit awkward. Yesterday, you might have seen claims that Chrono Trigger writer Yuji Horii accidentally confirmed that a remake of the beloved JRPG is in the works. It all read a bit suspicious right off the bat, because it initially just came from a Reddit post from someone who attended a panel Horii was speaking at during Napoli Comicon without any video evidence. Then some other posts started cropping up, alongside commenters saying they were also there and that this was true. Except, it isn’t true, because it was all a translation miscommunication.

Elden Ring Nightreign is no Bloodborne 2, but you can dress up as a hunter at the very least

We’re not too far off Elden Ring Nightreign now, with the spinoff game due out right at the end of the month. Some of you might have even played some of it already, unlike James, who struggled to play any of it at all when the test was held back in February. Considering how few of us have actually spent any time on it overall though, quite conveniently FromSoftware and Bandai Namco shared a little overview trailer yesterday that dove into what you’ll be doing in the Fortniteish Souls game.

Sandfall have no plans for more Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 just yet, but “chances are good” anyway

It seems like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is doing quite alright for itself, ‘ey? The J’RPG was awarded Rock Paper Shotgun’s coveted Bestest Bests badge by our own Nic in his review, and by all accounts it’s been received well by most everyone else too. Not that sales matter much in terms of a game’s quality, but the fact that it’s done well there as well at minimum means the lights are staying on at Sandfall Interactive. In fact it seems things are going better than just keeping the lights on, as it sounds like the developer is considering more of it, whatever that might be.

Despelote review

Despelote ought to feel idiosyncratic. Set in Ecuador during the country’s historic World Cup qualifying campaign in 2001, its protagonist is a half-remembered version of the game’s lead developer. Yet there’s nothing peculiar about it, either. Despelote is a game so authentic and personal that it hits upon universal truths.

GTA 6 has been delayed, even though Take-Two boss kept telling everyone it wouldn’t be

Open world crime blockbuster Grand Theft Auto 6 has been delayed until next year, say Rockstar, telling fans that they “need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve”. It’s not the biggest surprise – delays happen. But it’s a slightly embarrassing announcement given that Strauss Zelnick, big boss of publisher Take-Two, has twice publicly reassured investors that the game would release on time in autumn this year. The announcement comes with some sense of relief, however, as Rockstar have now set a firm date in Spring.

Rust adds a jungle biome – the biggest change to its map in 9 years

Survival hellscape Rust has added a tropical jungle biome to its procedurally generated maps, the biggest change to the landscape of the game in nine years. It’ll appear close to where new players spawn and hides a number of threats and fun. Poisonous snakes will skitter through the undergrowth and riverside crocs will chew your face given the chance. There are ruins and temples hidden among the trees, housing some basic loot. And you can swing from vines, perhaps inspiring a whole new life in the canopy. Probably for the best, considering there are now tigers and panthers stalking the ground below.

Bethesda are so chill about Skyblivion that they’re promoting it in Oblivion Remastered videos

The release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is theoretically terrible news for the creators of Skyblivion, a long-in-development mod that recreates Bethesda’s 2006 RPG in the Skyrim engine. On the one hand, you could argue that the official comeback care of Virtuos Studios renders Skyblivion unnecessary. On the other, there’s the usual worry that Bethesda’s intellectual property lawyers are going to erupt from the toilets like radioactive rats and eat the modders alive.

The Skyblivion crew professed themselves undaunted by the news, however. “This always was a passion project and still is until the end,” modder KRebel insisted last week. “For the community its a win-win as you get twice the amount of Oblivion this year.” And Bethesda have now met them with open arms by not only declining to sue the pants off Skyblivion for intellectual property infringement, but handing the modders keys for the official remaster and even going on camera to say that they’re looking forward to Skyblivion’s release.
