Indie Selects March Hero Image

The year is flying by, and March came through with the heavy hitters – and inevitably that means you’re hit with decision paralysis.  Believe me, we’ve all been there.  There’s a lot of great games out there and it can be hard to hear the call to adventure amongst all the chatter.  Don’t you worry, the ID@Xbox team have handpicked six Indie Selects that will kickstart your next big adventure.

Indie Selects Round-up Image

Be warned: some of these daring escapades are more than meets the eye. You may uncover a demon world or two, find heroism in a little slimeball, or you might find that diving into personal grief and trauma could be its own harrowing, cathartic and surprisingly melodic adventure. Don’t ask questions, just take a leap of faith and raid some tombs with us, because March Selects are calling! Here’s what we’ve got for you this month (in no particular order):

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage

Lost Records Art

Don’t Nod, the creators of the OG Life is Strange, return to the narrative adventure genre to deliver a tale of four young girls who experience an unforgettable summer filled with coming-of-age hijinks… and something more inexplicable. That mystery thread of “what happened?” kickstarts a current day reunion of friends piecing together their adolescence to resolve what exactly transpired during that fateful summer – an experience still affecting them now. This is the first chapter, with a second installment arriving in mid-April.

I loved the original Life is Strange series with its young adult angst, ennui, and sci-fi reality bending. It made those classic, outsized teenage “the world is ending!” dilemmas 100% literal in the case of protags Max and Chloe. Don’t Nod revisit that vibe but find a way to ratchet up the stakes and vagaries that surround the journey of Swann and her childhood friends by taking the “teens in trouble” trope and toeing the line in urgency between the feel-goodness of an all-girls’ Goonies and the not-so-feel-goodness of Showtime’s ‘Yellowjackets’.

The nerdy, always camcorder-ing Swann navigates shyness and her pending move out of small-town America via narrative, choice-based relationship building in a way that punched a familiar knot of dread in my tummy, no matter whether it was the threats of bullies or otherworldly situations. But throughout, the script, VO, and attention to circa-1995 details do wonders in grounding the experience of pre-social media adolescence. I’m now very excited for the second chapter to drop, not least for the amazing, period-perfect soundtrack (a Don’t Nod specialty). One serious Cocteau Twins needle drop may just have ’80s and ’90s shoegaze kids digging deep into their 4AD record label era – a throwback I’m still luxuriating in.

Together, in this place, they’re forced to try and remember clearly the fateful memories that have eluded them for the past 27 years.

CAPTURE & CONNECT

Connect with your newfound sisterhood through lifelike interactions and conversations that feel real: engage in immersive dialogue that changes based on where you look and what you say; where you can do things like interrupt and ignore. Grab your camcorder and explore, filming Velvet Cove and capturing the essence of its people, places, and lush nature. Film just for the fun of it or try to find the dark secrets tucked away.

GIRLS TO THE FRONT

Play as Swann and get to know your new friends, each with their own lives and battles. Come out of your shell and embrace rebellion over the summer as you form friendships with Nora, Autumn, and Kat. Through your actions and words, you’ll shape your relationships with each of them on your journey to self-discovery. Will your bond wither over the years or will it feel like you were barely separated at all?

A NOSTALGIC DREAMSCAPE

In a picturesque corner of Michigan in 1995 lies the seemingly sleepy little town of Velvet Cove. Between dense woodlands and serene lakes, it’s a place where beauty meets the bizarre. Cloaked in a carefully crafted dreampop soundtrack that blends nostalgia and ethereal vibes, you’ll definitely find it all nice and relaxing…

Sorry We’re Closed

Sorry We're Closed Art

A celestial mystery filled with demonic delights and heavenly bodies; Sorry We’re Closed is an absolute treat. You play as Michelle, a lonely shopkeeper working in an odd London neighborhood with a bizarre and colorful cast of characters. Her reality cracks after a harrowing visit from a sleep-paralysis demon who is infatuated with Michelle’s heartache.  And from there, all hell breaks loose (I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist).

This retro-style survival horror is inspired by the halcyon days of the genre and utilizes its  classic fixed camera angle. For the uninitiated, this can take some getting used to. While this design choice can initially seem limiting, it offers a more cinematic and thoughtfully paced experience, which is crucial for quality mystery storytelling. But it’s not all old-school, as the developers at À La Mode Games have added a twist in the form of first-person combat. You’ll need to switch into firs-person mode on the fly, while using your demonic third eye to stun demons and exploit their weak hearts. This becomes a delicate balance –  while you’re in first-person mode, Michelle is unable to move, adding a layer of tension and strategy to the combat that kept it feeling engaging.

Where things really start cooking are the incredible art style and stellar soundtrack. The combination of classic graphics and painterly character art make this a beautiful blend of old and new, while the soundtrack features catchy hip-hop and hauntingly chill beats, with a menu theme that I left on in the background for hours while I was working. Seriously, it’s on right now.

If you find yourself in the mood for some retro-horror and quality storytelling, Sorry We’re Closed is an absolute must play.

Sorry We’re Closed is an eccentric story-driven survival horror game about angels and demons that mixes fixed-camera exploration and arcade-style shooting. Michelle must use her Third Eye to see between worlds and uncover secrets.

Follow the final days of Michelle as she battles to break the curse placed on her by a powerful archdemon looking for love. Help (or hinder!) the lives of curious residents in Michelle’s bustling London borough as she pursues freedom from her own untimely demise.

Sorry We’re Closed is a fusion of nostalgic survival horror with a new perspective on combat, combining atmospheric environments with fixed-camera angles and the thrill of arcade-style first person shooting. Collect items and manage resources to help Michelle survive. Optional tank controls are available for those who enjoy the classic survival horror experience.

Michelle’s time is split between the perilous demon world and mingling with the locals on her residential street. Everyone’s battling their own inner demons and through Michelle you can help guide them. Multiple endings are available through RPG-style dialogue interactions with the extravagant cast.

Afterlove EP

Afterlove EP art

Have you ever played a game that felt like it was speaking directly to your soul? Afterlove EP is one of those gems. It’s a unique blend of visual novel, narrative adventure, and rhythm game set in the bustling city of Jakarta, Indonesia. You step into the shoes of Rama, an indie band frontman who’s grieving the loss of his girlfriend, Cinta. From the moment you start, you’re drawn into his world of sorrow and hope.

The game kicks off a year after Cinta’s death, and Rama has pretty much isolated himself from his bandmates and life in general. Your mission? Help Rama navigate his grief, reconnect with his bandmates, and prepare for a comeback show that could change everything. Sounds intense, right?

Over the course of 28 in-game days, you guide Rama through various activities. Each day brings new opportunities to mend neglected relationships, form new ones, pick up your guitar, and get ready for that critical gig! The choices you make will shape Rama’s journey, leading to branching storylines and multiple endings. And who likes rhythm game elements? This guy! They add a real interactive layer to the narrative, letting you immerse yourself in the music and emotions that drive Rama’s story (fair warning: you may want to bring tissues).

The game’s art style is a splendid recreation of 21st Century Jakarta, with vibrant hand-drawn visuals that bring the city to life. As you explore the streets, you’ll encounter bustling markets, serene parks, and lively cafes, each contributing to the immersive experience. The soundtrack, composed by Indonesian musicians, enhances the emotional impact of the game. The melodies resonate with Rama’s feelings, creating a powerful connection between you and the character.

Playing Afterlove EP was a profoundly personal experience. As I joined Rama through his emotional journey, I found myself reflecting on my own experiences with loss and recovery. The game’s deep narrative and rhythm elements work together to create a captivating and emotionally resonant experience. If, like me, you enjoy games like Florence, which also combines narrative and rhythm elements, you’ll find Afterlove EP equally compelling. It’s a testament to the raw power of indie games to tell deeply personal and emotionally impactful stories. If you haven’t played it yet, now is the perfect time to dive into the melodic world of Afterlove EP and experience this emotional journey for yourself.

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered

Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered Art

If you’re a fan of action-adventure games, the Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered collection has got to be on your list. This collection brings together three classic titles from the iconic series, beautifully remastered for modern platforms by indie publisher and developer Aspyr. These games follow the adventures of Lara Croft, the fearless archaeologist, as she explores ancient tombs, solves intricate puzzles, and battles formidable foes. The genre is a perfect blend of action, adventure, and puzzle-solving, offering a rich and immersive experience.

I remember the first time I played Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (Tomb Raider IV). The sense of wonder and excitement as I guided Lara through the ancient ruins of Egypt was unparalleled. The remastered version has only enhanced that experience, with graphics that would have stunned me back then, and improved controls that make the gameplay smoother and more enjoyable. It’s like revisiting an old friend, but with a fresh new look.

Tomb Raider Chronicles (Tomb Raider V) and Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (Tomb Raider VI) continue Lara’s adventures, each with its unique storyline and challenges. Chronicles offers a series of flashback missions that delve into Lara’s past adventures, while The Angel of Darkness introduces a more mature narrative. Both games have been given a new lease on life with the remastered collection, making them accessible to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

If you enjoy games like Assassin’s Creed, the new Indiana Jones, or Prince of Persia, you’ll find a lot to love here. The gameplay mechanics and storytelling are reminiscent of these titles, but with Lara Croft’s unique flair that made her an iconic character in the first place.

I’ve spent countless hours exploring every nook and cranny of these games, and I can confidently say that they are worth every minute. The learning curve is there, but it’s part of what makes the experience so rewarding. Whether you’re a seasoned Tomb Raider fan or new to the series, this collection offers a fantastic journey through time and adventure.

Ultros

Ultros Art

Looking for a familiar genre with an unexpected twist? Then you need to check out Ultros. This game is a vibrant, psychedelic journey through a cosmic landscape known as The Sarcophagus. It’s a unique blend of Metroidvania and roguelite genres, offering a fresh and captivating experience.

During my first run through I was struck by the visuals, which were both immediately captivating and almost hallucinogenic. The art style was unlike anything I’d seen before. Navigating through The Sarcophagus felt like I was on a trippy space ride, uncovering secrets and battling bizarre creatures. Ultros isn’t just about its stunning visuals, though. The gameplay is engaging, with a mix of exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving. The world is easy to get lost in, but that’s part of the charm. The game’s big differentiator is a time-loop mechanic, which adds an intriguing layer to the gameplay, making each run feel fresh and challenging. The learning curve is there, but it’s what makes the game so rewarding.

If you enjoy Xbox games like Ori and the Blind Forest or Hollow Knight, you’ll find a lot to love in Ultros. The gameplay mechanics and storytelling are reminiscent of these titles, but with a unique psychedelic flair. This game just grabs you and won’t let go, as I am still exploring every corner of this game, and believe me, it’s worth every minute. Whether you’re a seasoned Metroidvania fan or new to the genre, Ultros offers a fantastic and visually stunning adventure that just feels right.

Slime Heroes

Slime Heroes Art

Set in a world where slimes are the heroes, not the villains (for once), Slime Heroes is a delightful 3D action-adventure debut from indie studio Pancake Games. This whimsical game combines elements of RPG and puzzle-solving, seeing you take control of an adorable, customizable slime on a grand adventure to save the Slime Kingdom from impending doom.

I was hooked. It felt like reconnecting with an old friend, reminiscent of the classic games from a bygone era. The vibrant, colorful graphics and whimsical soundtrack immediately drew me in. The gameplay is a perfect blend of open-world exploration and deceptively formidable combat—think of it as a cute version of Dark Souls. There’s an abundance of challenges and fun to be found here. You must think on your feet to survive and make it to the checkpoints, all while enjoying the lighthearted, gooey antics of your slime kingdom, which has been overtaken by mysterious corruption.

One of the things I personally love about this game is the sense of progression. As you advance through the game, you’ll encounter a variety of enemies, and upon defeating them, you’ll unlock their unique skills and special powers. This keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting, as you’re constantly discovering new ways to tackle challenges. Plus, the game has a charming storyline that keeps you invested throughout your adventure.

If you’re a fan of games like Dark Souls or the Zelda series, you’ll feel right at home with Slime Heroes. The game strikes a perfect balance between being accessible to newcomers and offering depth for seasoned gamers. It’s easy to pick up, but mastering the various slime abilities and strategies will keep you coming back for more. Whether you’re a casual gamer or a hardcore enthusiast, this game has some gooey-ness for everyone.

Gran Turismo 7 update 1.57 available today

Three new cars added this month

Aston Martin Vintage ‘18

(Can be purchased from Brand Central)

This lightweight cornering machine has been called the best Aston Martin ever.

The ‘Vantage’ name had long been used by Aston Martin to represent their high performance model grades, but in 2005 the Vantage became its own separate model. Relatively compact for an Aston Martin model and equipped with a V8 engine, the car would become a hit being the best handling front-engine rear-wheel drive model in the line-up. The next generation Vantage introduced in 2017 carried on the core concepts of the model.

Though sharing a platform with the DB11 V8, the Vantage body has a shorter wheelbase and is 120 kg lighter which results in a cornering machine that has been lauded as the best handling car in the history of Aston Martin. The powerplant is a Mercedes-AMG 4L V8 producing 502 BHP. With a 0-62 mph time of 3.7s, and a top speed of 195 mph, the car is also capable of supercar speeds.

Mazda CX-30 X Smart Edition ‘21

(Can be purchased from Brand Central)

This crossover SUV from Mazda features a revolutionary new engine design.

During the sport utility vehicle (SUV) boom that swept across the globe during the 2010s, Mazda introduced their CX-3 and CX-5 models, however there was a significant size difference between the two. The CX-30 is a crossover SUV designed to fill that gap in the line-up between the CX-3 and CX-5. While relatively compact, measuring 4,395 mm in length, 1,795 mm in width and 1,540 mm in height, the CX-30 still exhibits Mazda’s flowing, streamlined ‘KODO Design’ aesthetics in its exterior. On the front mask, the signature wing stretches out to the sides, joining the left and right headlights together, while the ripple across the side of the body exquisitely reflects the light as it moves across.

The car is provided with a choice of 3 powertrains: The 2L gasoline direct injection ‘SKYACTIV-G’, the 1.8L direct injection diesel ‘SKYACTIV-D’ or the ‘SKYACTIV-X’ a 2L gasoline direct injection engine which uses a revolutionary spark-controlled compression ignition (SPCCI) system. The ‘CX-30 X Smart Edition’ grade seen here was introduced in 2021, based on the ‘SKYACTIV-X’ model. One of the major selling points of this model are its wealth of driver assistance equipment included as standard, like the Active Driving Display which projects information onto the windscreen, and the Smart Brake Support automatic emergency braking system. The introduction of this model grade also saw improvements to the SKYACTIV-X system itself, with automatic models receiving increased throttle pedal resistance to improve driving feel.

Renault Kangoo 1.4 ‘01

(Can be purchased from Brand Central / Used Cars)

A popular leisure activity vehicle that started life as a commercial van.

In France, there has been a long-running trend of ‘fourgonnette’ style vehicles, small commercial vans, with a number of bestsellers emerging over the years. One such car which stemmed from this trend was the Renault Kangoo, originally debuting in 1997. When developing the Kangoo, alongside optimizing its performance as a commercial vehicle, Renault also added some features that would give it some potential to be an MPV for personal leisure as well. This model included sliding doors for the rear passenger seats and separate rear seats that could be individually adjusted. This strategy proved to be a success and the Kangoo became the forerunner of the ‘ludospace’ leisure activity vehicle segment. The roughly 4 m long body provided abundant cargo space, making it the go-to model for outdoors activities. The Kangoo was available with a variety of different power units to fit its purpose, but the model featured here uses the 1.4L gasoline engine. At only 73 BHP, it offers the bare minimum in power, but the ability to use all the power available is in the true spirit of French automobiles. And with its soft suspension, this makes for an unusually exhilarating driving experience.

Café / Extra Menus

The following Menu will be added to the Extra Menus section:

  • Extra Menu No. 45: Suzuki (Collector Level 35 and above)

The following new events have been added to ‘World Circuits’:

  • European Clubman Cup 600: Deep Forest Raceway Reverse
  • Japanese FF Challenge 450: Tokyo Expressway – Central Counterclockwise

‘GT Sophy’ can now be selected as the rival AI in Custom Race on all GT Sophy supported tracks and layouts in World Circuits.

‘The Faroe Islands’ has been added as a featured curation in Scapes.

InZOI Turned My Life to Sh*t

Wouldn’t we all like to know what our future looks like? Well, I decided to take a sneak peek at mine and walk in the shoes of 50-year-old me for a day via InZoi, the new life sim competitor out of Korea looking to take The Sims on at its own game.

Join me as I get accustomed to a new city, try new foods, attempt to make new friends, and even chart a new career. Fair warning, though, things may get dark quickly. It’s far less interesting for me to describe the video, though, so I think you should just watch is instead. You can do that below!

My favorite microSD cards for Steam Deck having been heavily discount in the Amazon Big Spring Sale

Running out of space on your Steam Deck is basically a rite of passage. You start off thinking 512GB is plenty, then suddenly you’ve got five AAA games, six indies, and no room left for screenshots. Been there. That’s why I always keep a high-speed microSD card loaded up and ready to go. Undoubtedly, a microSD card is one of the most important Steam Deck accessories you can pick up during big sale events like this.

If There Is No The Last of Us 3, Would Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann Keep the TV Show Going Past the Games?

Amid question marks about the future of The Last of Us video game series, fans are wondering where the story might go next after the HBO series Season 2 and 3 cover off the second video game. Earlier this month, series creator Neil Druckmann cast doubt on the prospect of The Last of Us 3, saying: “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”

But if there’s no The Last of Us 3, would Naughty Dog and Druckmann keep the TV show going past the games?

That’s the question IGN put to Druckmann himself in a recent interview, and he replies to say that while he has an ending of The Last of Us story in mind, because he’s not sure if he’ll get the chance to make The Last of Us 3, he’s leaving nothing on the line.

“I have to have an ending,” Druckmann said. “When I made The Last of Us 1, I didn’t know if there was going to be a sequel, so that had to be a definitive ending. When I worked on Uncharted 4, I don’t know if we’ll ever get to do it again. I need it to be a definitive ending. Last of Us 2, same way. All these things have to line up.

“I don’t know how long I’ll keep doing this or whether I’ll be given another opportunity. So I leave nothing on the line.

“Right now it’s like, we have an ending in mind. And that ending will be it. That ending will be it for this story.”

One question hanging over Druckmann is if he will even have the time to make The Last of Us 3, were it to be green lit for production. That’s because he has his hands full with The Last of Us TV show, which is set to round-out the events of The Last of Us 2 video game with Season 2 and Season 3, and the recently announced PlayStation game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

“As far as everything else, and you’re asking me about future games, my time so much is, we have to finish this season,” Druckmann continued. “We’re not quite done. We’re almost there. Knock on wood we get to do it again. Season 3, there’s a lot more story we have to cover, as you know with game two.

“And then my hands are pretty full with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.”

In February 2024, Druckmann teased a “concept” for a potential The Last of Us 3 at the end of Grounded 2: Making The Last of Us Part 2, noting that there’s “probably one more chapter to this story.”

“The first game had such a clean concept of like, the unconditional love a parent feels for their child,” he said. “The second one, once we landed on this idea of the pursuit of justice at any cost, justice for the ones you love, we felt like, ‘there’s a clean concept here and there’s a throughline from the first game, about love.’ If we never get to do it again, this is a fine ending point. Last bite of the apple, the story’s done.”

“The great thing about working at Naughty Dog is that we don’t have to,” he added. “It’s always like, ‘we would love another Last of Us, but if you guys feel you’re passionate about something else, we’ll support this other thing.’ Very privileged position to be in, I never take that for granted. I’ve been just thinking about it, ‘is there a concept there?’ And for now years, I haven’t been able to find that concept. But recently, that’s changed, and I don’t have a story, but I do have that concept that to me is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, is its own thing, and yet has this throughline for all three. So it does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”

The Witcher 4 won’t come out before 2027, so chill out would you

The Witcher 4 may have entered its “most intensive” production phase but it won’t be gracing your whirring machinery any time in the next year or two. During a financial call for people in suits with lots of money, the developer said they were hoping to give shareholders value for money, “even though we do not plan to release The Witcher 4 by the end of 2026.” Basically confirming what you probably could’ve guessed anyway: there’s no plan to bring the RPG sequel out before 2027.

InCARceration is a free minigame “carlike experience” for parole breakers everywhere

Soberly breaking down the plot, mechanics and presentation of InCARceration would be like trying to cook a meal, win a spelling bee or perform a sneak-attack after being welded inside a car. So I will say only that this is an amusing bizarro take on WarioWare that makes me yearn for other, bizarro takes on WarioWare.

Pokémon Company Breaks Silence On Online Shopping Experience After New Expansion’s Disastrous Launch

What’s the ETA on those ETBs?

Yesterday, the Pokémon Company launched its latest Trading Card Game expansion, Destined Rivals, via its online store. As was predicted, the set proved to be massively popular, and many of those hoping to pick up one of the sought-after Elite Trainer Boxes were hit with site crashes and multiple hour-long wait times.

If that wasn’t rough enough, we’ve today learnt that even those who managed to place an order may not actually be able to get their hands on the elusive ETB, as The Pokémon Company appears to be retroactively cancelling orders (thanks for the heads up, VGC).

Other books in the sale include chart-topper Onyx Storm, and its fellow Empyrean series books Iron Flame and Fourth Wing, alongside the Harry Potter Illustrated Books.

Pokemon TCG Deals

It’d be silly not to mention the latest round of Pokémon TCG stock at Amazon during the sale, with elusive Elite Trainer Boxes like Twilight Masquerade available again, alongside a slew of other hot booster sets.

LEGO Deals

LEGO sets are getting more expensive, but they always seem to get solid discounts during these types of sales. Some highlights from the current sale include discounts on the LEGO Wednesday collaboration as well as some very cozy LEGO Animal Crossing sets.

More Deals Worth Keeping an Eye On

It’s always the right time to get accessories you actually need, but it’s even better to get them on sale. That said, Amazon has discounts on various PS Portal accessory deals. My other favorites that are worth considering include Audible Premium Plus for $0.99, Apple AirPods Pro 2 for $169.99, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for $32.99, and 65″ LG C4 4K OLED Smart TV for $1,397.

Should You Shop the Amazon Big Spring Sale or Wait?

The Amazon Spring Sale (March 25-31) couldn’t come at a better time. With no major shopping holidays between now and Memorial Day, this is one of the best opportunities to score great deals before summer. While Prime Day and Black Friday might bring even steeper discounts, those are months away – if you’re looking to save right now, this sale is your best bet.

That said, strategic shopping always wins. If you’re eyeing a big-ticket item like a TV or Kindle but don’t need it immediately, waiting for a larger sale could be worth it. Want to make sure you’re getting the best possible price? Tools like CamelCamelCamel let you track pricing history, helping you spot real deals from the ones that just look good. It’s a trick we swear by to make sure every recommendation is truly worth your money.

If you’re looking for more Spring Sale savings, there is currently a Walmart Super Savings Week sale happening now that has many deals that Amazon doesn’t, so it could be worth checking out as well. There’s also the Secretlab Spring Sale with plenty of top discounts on gaming chairs.
