Review: The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GameCube) – A Timeless Treasure

Cel-da? Is…is that you?

In honour of the game’s arrival on Switch 2 as part of the Nintendo Classics GameCube lineup, here’s our new retro review of one of Link’s most memorable adventures…

If I were to put together a list of my favourite pre-Switch-era Zelda games, those that came before the franchise-transforming Breath of the Wild, where would 2002’s The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker fit in?

Review: Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S (Switch 2) – A Disappointing Update For A Modern Puzzle Classic

T-blocks keep fallin’ on my head.

We’re making this a trend now, huh? It’s never long before Puyo Puyo Tetris makes its way onto the scene. Such was the case back in 2017 with the launch of the original Switch, when a worldwide release of 2014’s Puyo Puyo Tetris (which released on Wii U and 3DS in Japan) served as one of the very first games available for Nintendo’s then-fledgling hybrid.

It was arguably a ‘right place, right time’ moment for the crossover franchise, appealing to casual Tetris fans, puzzle game die-hards, and the massive influx of players just looking for more things to play on their shiny new system. Crucially, it helped reintroduce Puyo Puyo to the wider global market after a lengthy hiatus from localising the franchise.

Miyamoto doesn’t even get a “special thanks”.

PSA: Here’s How To View The Iconic GameCube Startup Screen On Switch 2

It’s aliiiiive!

With the Switch 2 now available, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass owners now have access to GameCube games – rejoice! Alas, it’s only three for the time being, but they’re absolute bangers, and more will come.

For those particularly nostalgic for Nintendo’s adorable little box from the early ’00s, you might have been disappointed to learn that there’s no iconic startup screen when booting up the app on Switch 2. Fear not, however, because there’s a small trick you can do to view the enduring animation.

YouTube Is Working With Nintendo To Make Its App Available On Switch 2

It’s one of many video apps currently not available.

Switch 2 supports existing apps and games, but out of the gate you might experience some issues. If you’ve been trying to access YouTube on your new Nintendo system you’ll receive a notice about how the software is unable to start.

In case you’re wondering if it will make a return, Nintendo has already flagged this in its backward compatibility tests, noting how the issue with YouTube is “being investigated”. In an update, a user of this app has reached out to YouTube via social media and received the following response.

Review: Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess (Switch 2) – Tower Defence With A Twist In Capcom’s Gorgeous, Yokai-Slaying Hybrid

Cleanliness is next to godliness.

If you want to put your Switch 2 through its paces, there’s no shortage of options in its generous launch lineup. Whether it’s the candy-colored charm of Mario Kart World or the neon-drenched cityscape of Cyberpunk 2077, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to visual powerhouses.

With such major titles on offer, it would be easy to overlook Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. Released on other platforms in July 2024, it’s a game that, at first glance, might seem like just another Japanese action game, complete with unwieldy title and familiar feudal-era setting. Jumping into the adventure of the goddess Yoshiro and her faithful protector Soh, I was surprised to find that Capcom’s Shinto-inspired epic is a truly compelling blend of action and tower defence.

Review: The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition – The Best Way To Play, But ‘Zelda Notes’ Sucks

Tri-forced new content.

Editor’s Note: As this is our first ‘Nintendo Switch 2 Edition’ review (and with many more to come, potentially), we want to outline their focus from the off.

Our existing reviews — in this case for Breath of the Wild, both the Wii U and Switch versions, and the DLC — are still live and relevant. If you’re coming to this game fresh, we recommend you look back at those first. Our NS2 Edition reviews will focus on new features and upgrades, evaluating what they add to the original experience, and whether they’re worth your time – and they will be scored accordingly.

Random: You Can Mix & Match Switch 1 + 2 Joy-Con As Pairs

Now that’s worth buying a console for!

Yes, friends. We’ve spent the past few days pushing and pulling at our new Switch 2s as we get to figuring out just what this baby is really capable of. And, well, it seems as though it’s capable of some quite twisted stuff.

Or at least a bit mixed up, as it turns out you can actually mix and match your Switch 1 and Switch 2 Joy-Con as working pairs and get stuck into playing games and browsing the Switch 2 console menus in the manner of someone wearing two completely differently-sized gloves.

Review: Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut (Switch 2) – A Series Highlight That’s Never Looked Or Played Better

I’ll be damned, the punk kid’s finally turned into a true yakuza.

Yakuza 0 was the first Yakuza game — after many, many attempts on my part — that finally and fully opened my eyes to the magic of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s long-running (and entirely bats**t) franchise. This was the one that finally did me in.

And from the moment its incredible opening cutscene sequence kicks in, it’s not hard to see why, it’s not hard to know you’re in the very best of company with Yakuza 0. It’s a lavish, opulent, gritty, violent and wholly adult affair, that also happens to be incredibly cheesy, almost ludicrously silly, and full of good-intentioned heart. It’s a complicated old thing, is this Yakuza malarkey.
