Review: Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut (Switch 2) – A Series Highlight That’s Never Looked Or Played Better

I’ll be damned, the punk kid’s finally turned into a true yakuza.

Yakuza 0 was the first Yakuza game — after many, many attempts on my part — that finally and fully opened my eyes to the magic of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s long-running (and entirely bats**t) franchise. This was the one that finally did me in.

And from the moment its incredible opening cutscene sequence kicks in, it’s not hard to see why, it’s not hard to know you’re in the very best of company with Yakuza 0. It’s a lavish, opulent, gritty, violent and wholly adult affair, that also happens to be incredibly cheesy, almost ludicrously silly, and full of good-intentioned heart. It’s a complicated old thing, is this Yakuza malarkey.

Review: Genki Attack Vector – A Modular Switch 2 Case Which Opts For Comfort Over Protection

Attack isn’t the best form of defence after all.

Accessory maker Genki has a whole host of Switch 2 accessories on the market to support the console’s launch, and the excellently named Attack Vector is one of the ones which caught my attention from the get-go.

Described by Genki (which is currently in Nintendo’s bad books) as a “modular grip case for serious handheld command”, the Attack Vector comes in three different parts. The main bodywork clips onto your Switch 2 console, while the other two pieces bolt onto your Joy-Con 2 controllers.

Review: Hitman World Of Assassination – Signature Edition (Switch 2) – Not Yet The Showstopping Port 47 Deserves

Names are for friends, so I don’t need one.

Hitman! A rebooted and re-suited assassination spectacular that I once got in a spot of bother over (never reveal that you’re gonna kill Sean Bean in a computer game on social media, lest people mistake it for a threat), has finally — and without the need for cloud streaming technology — made it to a Nintendo Switch console.

This Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition release features all of the content that’s previously been released for a trilogy of games that just gets better as it goes along. So yeah, there’s an absolute ton of game to get stuck into here, no worries on that front. There was a lot of scope for the maestros over at IO Interactive to screw up somewhere along the line here, too, with so many moving parts, gadgets, mechanics, overlapping narrative aspects and audaciously big set pieces folded into a trio of huge adventures. This was a big old task they set themselves.

Review: Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller – A New Benchmark In Comfort And Design

Super-smooth.

Moving from the Switch 1 Pro Controller to the Switch 2 Pro Controller, Nintendo has largely taken the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ route. Keeping the same basic layout intact, it instead applied several small, but significant improvements to make this latest iteration the very best Nintendo controller I’ve ever had the pleasure of using.

So, looking at the design of the new pad, it all looks pretty familiar, but there are a few changes that should be noted.

Review: Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition (Switch 2) – A Superb Port Of An Incredible RPG

Here comes the choom-choom train.

It’s more often than not these days that a game released in an underwhelming state is left abandoned in a pool of its own minor updates. On occasion, though, we have a redemption arc like that belonging to 2020’s Cyberpunk 2077.

Originally released in a state that was barely functional and riddled with more bugs than an anteater’s digestive tract, it’s safe to say that CD Projekt Red has not only redeemed its reputation, but the game is now celebrated as one of the strongest RPGs of the decade.

PSA: Got A Switch 2 Pro Controller? This Little Capture Trick Is A Game-Changer

Snap happy.

With the Switch 2’s new Pro Controller (and the new Charging Grip, actually), one of the biggest changes from its predecessor is the addition of the ‘GL’ and GR’ buttons on the back.

Now, if you’re anything like us, then chances are these buttons probably won’t get a whole lot of use in terms of gameplay. Sure, maybe you could map a jump button to one of them if you’re playing an FPS, but generally speaking, most games will have been optimised to make good use of the standard button layout. You don’t want to alienate those just using the standard Joy-Con, after all.
