The Mario Kart franchise has never really been particularly ‘difficult’, per se – at least not when you compare it to something like F-Zero – but there are undoubtedly moments when it feels like the whole world is against you. Indeed, the games have occasionally been labelled as “unfair” thanks to moments of relentless bad luck. Thankfully, these incidences are rare, but goodness, it can feel completely debilitating when it happens.
Take the below short clip from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for instance, posted on X by user @ArtistRemaining. Taking place during a race on the N64 ‘Yoshi Valley’ track, the player takes a cheeky shortcut on the third and final lap, however the speed boost from two mushrooms lying on the bridge causes the kart to careen off the side and into the void.

It’s that time again.
It’s the middle of August, which means it’s time for another glimpse at the future of video games with the upcoming Gamescom 2024.
As always, the festivities will kick off with the Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase in Cologne, Germany, during which regular host Geoff Keighley will reveal new trailers and information for some of the biggest games hitting shelves in the foreseeable future.

We’ve all got them. Brilliant, much-celebrated video games — sometimes ones boasting a huge lineage of excellent sequels — which, for some reason, we never got around to playing.
It might have been unfortunate timing, with another game arriving to swallow up our time and money. Maybe we own the game (eShop sales, amirite!?) with every intention of playing, or perhaps the overwhelming accumulation of entries intimidated us and we just never found a suitable series pool in which to dip our toe. Whatever the reason, the line must be drawn here.

Last time, we were back with the Mega Man franchise to look at Mega Man Zero 3, the, uh, third entry in the Zero sub-series for GBA. As expected, the beautiful Japanese design won by a landslide, scoring 73% of the vote. The US variant bagged 17%, while the ghastly European design managed 11%.

The soundtracks for Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean as well as Baten Kaitos: Origins are now available on “various music platforms” to stream and download. All up, there are 118 songs you can listen to on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music and YouTube Music.

If you’re keen for more arcade-style racing action on the Nintendo Switch, Gameloft has now confirmed Asphalt Legends Unite will arrive on the eShop later this month on 19th August.
This new expansion (which will see the free-to-play title Asphalt 9: Legends rebranded) was originally released in July, but got delayed for Switch. To make up for this, multiple gifts will be offered to Switch players.
