Flashback 2 Is Out Now, But Switch Owners Will Need To Wait A Bit Longer

It’ll be here in a flash.

Developer and publisher Microids has launched Flashback 2 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, though unfortunately, it looks like Switch owners will need to wait a little longer, specifically until sometime in Q1 2024.

The game, developed with original Flashback creator Paul Cuisset, is a direct sequel to the 1992 Amiga original while presumably ignoring the events of Fade to Black, a 1995 sequel developed by Delphine Software International.

Best early Black Friday gaming keyboard deals 2023

I’d be fibbing if I said that narrowing down the best early Black Friday gaming keyboards took much detective work – sales events like this are typically rich with PC peripherals, as you may have already noticed in our Black Friday gaming mouse deals guide. That’s still good news to you, the discerning key presser, as even with the main event a few days away, there’s already a healthy selection of discounts on mechanical and mebrane keyboards to choose from. Plenty of the outright best gaming keyboards, no less, are getting slashed down.

Rocksteady’s first Suicide Squad dev diary restores a bit of trust, but fundamental issues remain

Warner Bros and Rocksteady have released the first of a series of development diaries for troubled comicbook schloot-me-do Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. And it looks… OK?

The game’s fundamental conceptual hang-up remains – they’ve taken four DC supervillains with different powers that lend themselves to different kinds of story, and smurged them all into one big live-servicey open world spaff ’em up, strongly defined by guns. It still requires an online connection, even when playing in single player, and as far as we know, it’ll still have a battle-pass with cosmetic items. But this is a lot more convincing than the first gameplay footage, mostly because it walks you through the opening sections of the game and shows you how King Shark, Boomerang, Deathshot and Harley Quinn acquired their open-world-friendly traversal abilities (they stole them from a Justice League museum), rather than springing them on you and expecting you to cheer at how CRAZY everything is.

We also learn about how those abilities differ, at least in theory. Harley gets a grapple gun and a Bat drone that serves as a mobile grappling point, a neat answer to the perennial Spider-Man game question of whether Spider-Man is really swinging from buildings or hooking onto thin air. Boomerang gets a gauntlet that lets him throw his boomerang and teleport to its location, a bit like Sombra in Overwatch, while also conferring bursts of super-speed on level surfaces. I quite like the sound of that.

AEW’s Like a Dragon-Themed Street Fight Was Perfectly Chaotic

Earlier this evening, wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling (AEW) teamed up with Sega to promote upcoming game Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, in the wildest possible way. They got together some of the nerdiest wrestlers possible and put on a Like a Dragon-themed street fight complete with heat actions, improvised weapons, and cosplay. And it absolutely ruled.

The match has been promoted for over a week now as a four-on-four street fight with the team of Powerhouse Hobbs, Konosuke Takeshita, Brian Cage, and Kyle Fletcher facing off against known Like a Dragon fan Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho, Kota Ibushi, and Paul Wight. From the get-go, everyone involved seemed fully committed to the bit. Omega’s team recorded a promo airing earlier in the night with all four men in suits that heavily evoked an iconic scene from Yakuza 4. And when the groups entered, almost everyone was in some flavor of costume. Takeshita was in full Goro Majima cosplay, Brian Cage showed up as Axel Stone from Streets of Rage, Jericho kept the suit on from earlier, and Omega had some wicked Like a Dragon-themed pants.

The fight itself was a pretty classic street fight, but instead of a ring littered just with tables, chairs, chains, barbed wire, and other classic street fight props, it was also full of objects you might find in Like a Dragon’s Kamurocho or Sotenbori. There were street signs advertising ramen, beer bottles, milk crates, and even a bike. A moving image of Sotenbori was projected up on the massive screen behind the ring with pedestrians walking up and down the road to complete the vibe.

I turned on AEW tonight hoping to see Kenny Omega hit a guy with a giant traffic cone, and while I didn’t get precisely that, I was far from disappointed. Multiple people were smacked with milk crates or smashed with beer bottles. Hobbs took Wight outside and slammed him into the hood of a car. Omega got chucked into a ramen sign.

One major highlight of the match involved Jericho and Takeshita heading up into the stands, through the lobby, and into a VIP lounge covered in fancy black executive couches that looked like they’d come right out of Millenium Tower. They slammed each other around a bit before heading back into the lobby, where Takeshita jumped behind the snack counter, climbed on top of the vending machines, and tried to dive back onto Jericho only for Jericho to blast him with a fire extinguisher.

Even a bike got used. At one point, Ibushi mounted the bike, rode it down the ramp to the ring with a metal pipe in his hand, bapping people as he went, and rode around the arena until Brian Cage shoved him off the bike. Later in the match, Takeshita grabbed the bike and slammed it into Omega – Majima vs. Kiryu, but not how you’d expect it.

The whole thing was an absolute delight, from the entrances to the ending – victory belonging to Omega, Ibushi, Jericho, and Wight, of course. Following the match, Ibushi announced he’s officially joining AEW, and Omega seemed to tease a future cameo appearance in the Like a Dragon games. He’s already achieved that feat once, but I’m now sitting here hoping we can summon Omega wholesale, Poundmate-style, in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth:

Tonight’s Like a Dragon Street Fight was obviously sponsored all to heck to sell more copies of Like a Dragon, but frankly if you’re going to market a video game, this is a pretty fun way to do it. Omega’s love of the Like a Dragon franchise and video games more generally has already spawned dozens of cool costumes and crossover moments, including my favorite, his iconic Halloween entrance as Sans from Undertale. Given how many wrestlers are absolute huge nerds like the rest of us, I hope this is the start of a long, beautiful future of cool gaming-wrestling crossovers. I just need Kenny Omega to Heat Action someone with a giant traffic cone, and I’ll finally be fulfilled.

Save $100 Off the Sony PSVR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain VR Bundle for Black Friday

As part of its Dell Black Friday Sale event, Dell has the Sony PlayStation VR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle for $499.99. That’s $100 off retail price and the only vendor who has the PSVR2 discounted at the moment. In fact, at this price, it’s even cheaper than buying the PSVR2 by itself without any game included. We saw a similar deal earlier in the month where Dell included a $100 promotional gift card, but quite honestly, a straight up $100 discount is way, way better.

$100 Off the Sony PSVR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain Bundle

You’ll need to own either the PS5 Digital or Disc Edition console in order to use the PSVR2, but you’ll be in for a treat. The PSVR2 is easily one of the most advanced headsets available right now and a huge upgrade from the original PSVR headset. Like its predecessor, the PSVR2 features a halo-style strap that fits comfortably on your head and doesn’t press against your temples or squeeze your head like the Quest 3. The optics have been upgraded with two 2000×2040 OLED panels with 120Hz refresh rate, 110-degree FOV, and eye tracking with foveated rendering. There’s even a motor built into the visor to mimic rumble effects in the headset itself. The controllers are a huge update over its successor as well. Not only have they been redesigned for comfort and precision, they feature haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, precision tracking and finger touch detection. The PSVR2 is tethered, but you’ll just need a single USB connection to make it work.

There are currently two must own exclusives for the PSVR2, and that’s Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Gran Turismo 7. Call of the Mountain is included in this bundle. Gran Turismo is currently on sale for October Prime on Amazon and it’s possible the price will drop down even more on Black Friday. Either way, this is a great chance to own an excellent next-gen piece of hardware for a lot less than what everyone else paid.

How Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Addresses Its Biggest Plot Mystery

The long-delayed Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is finally seeing release in February 2024, and fans just got another look at the game via the first in a series of developer diaries. That new video not only reveals new gameplay footage and the fact that Metropolis will be twice the size of Arkham City’s Gotham map, it also addresses perhaps the single biggest mystery surrounding the plot of the game. Namely, how exactly can a team this small and underpowered hope to defeat the entire Justice League?

Let’s take a closer look at how the new Suicide Squad footage addresses this mystery and opens the door to the wider DC Universe in the process.

The Suicide Squad’s Power Level

The main character roster in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is both sensible and slightly head-scratching, depending on how you look at things. On the one hand, Rocksteady has gone with a pretty traditional lineup in Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang and King Shark. These are characters with a deep association with the Suicide Squad franchise. They’ve appeared not just in the comics, but in DC’s Suicide Squad films and animated projects. Alongside Amanda Waller herself, they’re arguably the characters that immediately come to mind when casual DC fans think of the Suicide Squad.

But while the roster may be a natural fit in terms of DC synergy, it doesn’t necessarily make sense in the context of a game where the whole point is to murder the Justice League. Task Force X is going up against the most powerful superheroes in the world, including an invulnerable Amazonian warrior, a godlike Kryptonian and a guy who can run faster than the speed of thought. And let’s not forget Batman, the guy who already took down two of the four Suicide Squad members himself in the Arkham games.

Against a team that strong, what exactly does the Squad have to offer?

Against a team that strong, what exactly does the Squad have to offer? Neither Deadshot nor Harley Quinn have any real powers to speak of. They’re just very good at killing ordinary humans. Captain Boomerang has his trick boomerangs, but that’s never done much to move him up the supervillain ladder in the DCU. Of the four, only King Shark has a truly impressive powerset, with the superhuman strength and durability the rest of the team lacks.

From the beginning, it was always a mystery as to how this specific team would be able to carry out its mission. Compared to some of the heavy hitters that have served on the Suicide Squad in the past (General Zod, Solomon Grundy, Enchantress), this team is looking fairly puny by comparison.

Granted, the Suicide Squad are usually the underdogs in any given storyline. They get by on a combination of tenacity and luck, and not everyone always makes it home alive. But the conflict in this game is on a whole other level compared to most Suicide Squad projects. How can this team hope to take down even one Justice Leaguer, let alone the whole team? The developer diary seems to provide us with an answer.

The Weapons of the DCU

The developer diary includes footage from an early scene in the game where the newly escaped Suicide Squad members enter the Hall of Justice and promptly begin looting the place. Apparently, no one in the League thought it was a bad idea to place fully functional superhuman weapons behind easily breakable glass and call it a day? But the League’s oversight is the Suicide Squad’s gain, as we see them steal some useful treasures to help level the playing field.

Height and verticality are clearly a big part of the combat in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, with much of the footage we’ve seen showing the characters leaping up and down the skyscrapers of Metropolis and blasting away at Brainiac’s forces. It’s here where we learn how the game makes that verticality possible. Harley Quinn steals Batman’s grapnel gun and Bat-drone. Captain Boomerang liberates Dr. Sivana’s Speed Force Gauntlet, giving him a taste of the Flash’s speed and maneuverability. Deadshot claims Gizmo’s jetpack, transforming him into a much more mobile sniper. Only King Shark rejects these new toys, as he alone has the inherent strength to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

It seems this is how the Suicide Squad will find a way of competing on the Justice League’s level. They’re “borrowing” the tools of more powerful heroes and villains in order to make up for their relative lack of superhuman abilities. For starters, suddenly Task Force X has a speedster of its own, which makes the idea of taking on the Flash a slightly less daunting task.

Will the team track down a Sinestro Corps or Red Lantern ring before taking on Green Lantern?

The question now is just how far the game will lean into the idea of the Suicide Squad repurposing superhuman tech. There are certainly some interesting possibilities here. Will the team track down a Sinestro Corps or Red Lantern ring before taking on Green Lantern? Will Lex Luthor (a villain we briefly glimpse in the developer diary) provide Task Force X with some Kryptonite-laced weapons before the big Superman showdown? Will Harley claim an Amazonian hammer before dueling Wonder Woman?

This new footage also hints that Penguin may play a key role in opening up the arsenal of the wider DC Universe. Following up on his recurring role in the Arkham games, we see that Oswald Cobblepot is now holed up in a bunker in Metropolis. Waller directs her team to Penguin’s hideout as one of their first missions. As a villain with his fingers in many pies, Penguin could be an easy way of introducing more gadgets and weapons into the picture.

Just how many iconic DC weapons will be harnessed by the Suicide Squad in the game? How will they be integrated into the “run and gun” style of gameplay we’ve seen so far? Rocksteady has a lot of room to get creative and break out of the straightforward shooter mold we’ve seen in most of the gameplay footage so far. With any luck, the battles against Superman, Wonder Woman and Brainiac himself won’t simply involve more jumping and shooting, but will instead integrate some of the coolest toys the DC Universe has to offer. It’s all a question of how deeply Rocksteady is willing to dig into this massive toybox.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Xbox Release ‘On Track’ for December as Larian Teases The Game Awards Reveal

Larian Studios has announced that it will be revealing the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox Series X|S at The Game Awards 2023 and that it’s still on track for the end of the year.

“Xbox players, we hear you’re looking for more news on Baldur’s Gate 3. The game is on track for a December release,” Larian said in statement. “We’ll see you at The Game Awards for the World Premiere of the exact release date.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 was released for PC and PS5 a few months ago, but the Xbox version still had some issues due to the Series S’s inability to perform splitscreen. While Microsoft’s policy is to have gameplay feature parity for the Xbox Series X and S versions, Microsoft granted Baldur’s Gate 3 a massive exception to launch the Series S without splitscreen. Only the Series X version will have the ability for splitscreen.

When the splitscreen concession was made, Larian said to expect the Xbox version to be released by the end of 2023. December is cutting it close, but it seems like everything is going as planned.

Larian said that while another entry in the Divinity: Original Sin series is in the cards, it may not be the studio’s next game. However, Larian will return to that universe at one point and finishing up Baldur’s Gate 3 remains top priority.

The Game Awards 2023 premieres on December 7. Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the nominees for Game of the Year category, along with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Alan Wake 2.

In IGN’s Baldur’s Gate 3 review, we said, “With crunchy, tactical RPG combat, a memorable story with complex characters, highly polished cinematic presentation, and a world that always rewards exploration and creativity, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the new high-water mark for CRPGs.”
