Elden Ring Mobile Game in Development, as Wait for DLC Continues

An Elden Ring mobile game is in development, but don’t hold your breath — it sounds like this one’s a while away.

Reuters reports that Tencent is working to adapt FromSoftware’s mega hit into a mobile game, but progress is described as “slow”.

Apparently Tencent wants the Elden Ring mobile game to work similarly to gacha game Genshin Impact, with a free-to-play business model supported by in-app purchases. But the design of Elden Ring, which is a single-player, premium action role-playing game, is “at odds” with Tencent’s vision.

News of an Elden Ring mobile game comes amid what fans hope is the imminent release of the hotly anticipated Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. Various changes to the back end of Elden Ring’s entry in Steam suggest something is afoot. So far, however, both developer FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco have remained quiet.

As for Tencent, it appears to be struggling to create mobile game hits based on established PC and console games. Last week it emerged Tencent had canceled an unannounced Nier mobile game.

PS5 beta adds DualSense controller sound enhancements and Share Screen interactions

As the new year kicks into high gear with an amazing slate of PS5 game releases like The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Tekken 8 and Helldivers 2, along with FINAL FANTASY VII Rebirth later this month, we’re pleased to roll out another PS5 system software beta today with a number of quality-of-life enhancements and new features.

While beta access is limited to invited participants in select countries*, we plan to release the update globally in the coming months. If you’re selected to participate in the beta, you’ll receive an email invitation today when it’s available to download. Some features available during the beta phase may not make it into the final version or may see significant changes.

Let’s jump in to the newly added features:

DualSense wireless controller built-in mic and speaker audio enhancements

We’ve updated the device software of the DualSense and DualSense Edge wireless controllers to improve their sound features.

  • Controller speaker enhancements. The controller speakers can now produce higher volume sound, allowing you to hear in-game sounds and voice chat audio more clearly.
  • Improved noise cancellation. The mic input quality on these controllers has been improved, courtesy of a new AI machine learning model. Background noise from button presses and game audio are suppressed, resulting in a better voice chat experience. Install the system software beta and update the controller device software to enjoy enhanced clarity of your voice chat audio when using the controller mic.
  • With this update, you may feel that the sounds coming from your controller speaker may sound louder. You can adjust the controller speaker volume from the control center.

Share Screen Interactions

Players watching Share Screen in full screen mode can now use pointers and emoji reactions to interact with the host’s gameplay.

  • Viewers can move a pointer around, send a ping or draw a line on the shared screen, allowing them to highlight certain objects or areas to guide the host player more accurately.
  • Viewers can send emoji-based reactions to the host’s screen to visually encourage and celebrate gameplay actions.
  • Note: this feature is available by default but can be turned off by the host in the Share Screen settings. Both the host and the viewer must be participating in the beta to use this feature during the beta period.

Adjust Brightness of PS5 Power Indicator

You can now adjust the brightness of your PS5 console’s power indicator.

  • Go to [Settings] > [System] > [Beep and Light], and then select [Brightness].

A heartfelt thank you to our community for always providing valuable feedback and supporting our beta programs. We’re excited to hear your thoughts!

Microsoft To Share “Vision For The Future Of Xbox” Next Week

Following rumours about select Xbox games going multi-platform.

There have been industry rumours recently about Microsoft potentially bringing select games to competitor platforms and last weekend it escalated, with games media outlets and key figures claiming Xbox could potentially go “all in” on a new multi-platform model.

It’s got to the point now where Microsoft’s Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has issued a statement (via social media) and rather than deny anything, he’s mentioned how there’ll be a “business update” next week where Microsoft shares its “vision for the future of Xbox”.

Avowed Team Is ‘Actively Working on’ Making Combat More Impactful, Says Director

Obsidian Entertainment has responded to criticism revolving around its upcoming fantasy RPG, Avowed, saying that there is still work to be done before players try the experience for themselves.

This update on one of Xbox Game Studios’ most anticipated titles comes from the Dropped Frames podcast, which recently invited Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel on to talk about how development is going. She says it’s been interesting to work on Avowed while periodically unveiling slivers of content to the public. However, as fans get to peek behind the curtain and critique what they see, she hopes they realize that these demos represent somewhat dated builds.

Avowed has only shown up at events a handful of times, with one recent example being a gameplay-focused demo that appeared at the Xbox Developer Direct in January.

“We’re getting to show more and more, but all of that is while the game is still in progress, obviously,” Patel explained. “One of the heartening things has been seeing fans call out some of the things that we are actively working on, like the sense of hitting and impacts as you’re attacking enemies. It’s like, ‘Yep, what you all saw was still a few weeks behind where we were even when that footage was released just because of the nature of the way these things are put together, and the team’s been working on it.’”

Patel says it’s nice to see feedback like this and know Obsidian has already addressed those concerns or is at least in the process of addressing them. When asked how the studio incorporates online commentary surrounding Avowed, she said that “it’s definitely a point of discussion.”

“We’ve definitely got enough people who follow that stuff closely enough that, if there’s something that’s coming up a lot in commentary, we’re probably talking about it internally,” Patel said.

We recently learned a lot about how Avowed will compare to some of Obsidian’s past titles. Fans familiar with the studio will be happy to know that the adventure will have multiple endings to uncover. However, you won’t be able to romance your companions as you wander through the magical settings, and you’ll only be able to play as either a human or an elf.

Avowed is currently slated to launch for PC and Xbox Series X | S sometime this fall. In other Microsoft gaming news, Xbox head Phil Spencer just revealed that the company will talk about its future in interactive entertainment in a business update next week. This follows swarms of reports that the company is interested in bringing some of its titles to other platforms.

Great deal alert: $2500 58-inch Samsung monitor now $1800

I don’t expect anyone to buy this monitor – but I’m absolutely entranced by a $700 discount on a gaming monitor that brings it down to “just” $1800. To be fair, this is essentially two 32-inch 4K 240Hz monitors without the gap in the middle, with a Mini LED backlight that delivers 1000-nit HDR highlights, an absolute beast of a monitor… but I’m guessing that most people that can drop nearly $2000 on a monitor aren’t waiting for a deals post on Rock Paper Shotgun to do so.

Still, I can dream, and this monitor is pretty cool, so let’s take a closer look at this absolute bargain.

Intel’s best value gaming CPU is down to £125 at Amazon UK

One of Intel’s best value CPUs for gaming is even better value than usual this week, as the Core i5 12400F is down to just £125 at Amazon. That’s more than £75 cheaper than the 13th and 14th-gen equivalents, which add on only meagre levels of performance, and a great price for a CPU that can use the same DDR4 or DDR5 motherboards with PCIe 5.0 support. If you’re building an Intel-based gaming PC, I’d argue that this is the best budget option going!
