Silent Hill 2

Bloober Team’s remake of Silent Hill 2 is on sale at Woot this weekend for $59.99. Recreating one of Konami’s most beloved titles was never going to be easy, but the Silent Hill 2 remake delivers an immersive horror experience that preserves almost everything that made the original so great. In our 8/10 review, we said the game “smoothly polishes down the rough edges of the original game’s combat while taking a piece of heavy grit sandpaper to scuff up every rust and mold-covered surface of its nightmarish environments, successfully making them appear far more abrasive and menacing to explore.”

My brain is still thawing for the comment freeze, and thus there is sadly no cool industry person to talk to us about books this week. I’m currently reading Tony Tulathimutte’s Rejection. Jia Tolentino wrote about it for the New Yorker. Jia Tolentino also writes very good books. But enough about books, tell me about books! One’s you’ve read, preferably, but I will also accept books you’ve formed opinions on based on their covers, as is good and proper. Book for now!

Review: Angel At Dusk (Switch) – A Magnificent, Grotesque Gateway To An Entire Genre

A universal horror.

Indie developer Akiragoya doesn’t just want you to get better at their latest shmup Angel at Dusk. They want to improve your prospects across the entire genre. Though taking a glance at the new Switch port of their distinctly grotesque work, you’d be forgiven for thinking the opposite is true.

Set deep in a future where pleasure, sin, crime, and more have been eradicated by scientific progress, Angel at Dusk presents an aggressive arcade bullet-hell shooter built around a meticulously repulsive futuristic body horror theme. The levels are formed from tangled masses of pustulating body parts, held together by ribbons of glistening sinew – an aesthetic that carries over to the monstrous enemy craft. Most moments through the game’s various modes, meanwhile, are filled with dense, intense bullet curtains, while elaborate intersecting mechanical systems focus on high-risk play. Hypercasual or cosy, Angel at Dusk is not.

Hats off.

Welcome one and all, to another edition of Box Art Brawl (hey, that rhymes)!

North America and Europe went against Japan for this one, and it was the latter that came out on top with 60% of the vote. A good effort from the Western regions, but Japan’s definitely brings back a few more memories of SA2.
